I thought you or someone else might know the answer.

It’s a rather silly question, really.

Do you not understand why guards aren’t going to be in favour of a “deal” accepting doo in principle, with no guarantees against redundancy for more than 18 months or so (and it isn’t clear even that has been offered).

If you aren’t able to understand that, there’s really little point in discussing it…

Not very consistent with the Object of the union, as per:

Only about five people even know that exists…

I’d hazard a guess more RMT and (especially) ASLEF members vote Tory than believe that old guff. A bit like the stuff about Cuban fishermen (is that still a thing).

So are you saying that there should be a guarantee that there should never be any compulsory redundancies?
That does not happen at any other company.

I’m saying Turkeys don’t tend to vote for Christmas…

But asking for a deal that guarantees that there will never be any compulsory redundancies is totally unrealistic.

Okay. So you seriously think they’re going to vote for a deal that abolishes their own job in principle, with no guarantees… You’d be happy with that, would you?

Things must work very differently in the food production industry… Again - you are showing you don’t really understand what a trade union is for.

RMT and Brexit says otherwise....

There are sore losers. Then there are Remainers!

Nothing wrong with being a remainer whatsoever. It was obvious that Brexit would be an absolute disaster. I'd feel embarrassed voting leave.

Where i work there has not been any compulsory redundancies in decades, but there was never any guarantee against them. Any redundancies were always voluntary and oversubscribed.

How nice for you. Clearly RMT members don’t have faith they’ll be as well treated
and they’re prepared to do something about it rather than just bending over and taking it.

In the end whether you agree with that or not is pretty irrelevant, really. It isn’t your job on the line and as you’ve said you don’t work in the industry. What exactly do you expect to gain from discussing this, and why do you care so much?

Brexiters have been incredibly sore winners, most Remainers have moved on.

Not judging by the comments on this thread! Brexit is being used as just yet another reason to attack the RMT… It is true pathetic on here at times.

If you look at wider public discourse though, the Brexiters have been squabbling between themselves in parliament utterly failing to get a grip on things whereas even Labour have committed to not rejoining the EU. A loud shouty man at Parliament square (who has now become rather tiresome) does not represent the majority of remainers, who now just want to get on with making the best of things.

The attack is deserved. Backing Brexit has caused major issues everywhere for staffing as well as being part of the problem with costs rising. I still think they'd have gone up without Brexit but not to this extent. The RMT should be called out for being part of the problem.

The thing with redundancies with front line staff is how understaffed the rail is. Most TOC's are desperate for more guards/train managers/drivers etc. I'd imagine a lot of these TOC's are losing staff hand over fist as well given the mood on the railways as well as retirements and not enough new intake. The issue is the threat of DOO which takes those jobs in a stroke.

Northern staff, for one, were striking for years over the threat of DOO and not long won that battle.

In my experience most on both sides have indeed moved on. Unsurprisingly I know a rough 50/50 split of each(!) as many of us probably do. This is off topic so we should probably leave it there.

So are you suggesting if the RMT (with less than 100,000 members) didn’t exist Brexit wouldn’t have happened?! What absolute nonsense.

There were plenty of us leavers who voted as we did for other reasons besides trade unions. ;)

I mean I just didn't say that whatsoever... Brexiteers have helped the Tories screw up the UK. That's nothing to gloat about.

How nice for you. Some of us have had to try and make the dog's breakfast work....
I have friends who work in the Civil Service, believe me I fully appreciate those who actually have to do the heavy lifting.
As I didn't have input into fixing anything around Brexit, I could only look at my options.

Question is are you man enough to admit you got it wrong? Thankfully, many Brexiteers now admit they would have voted differently if they'd been in possession of the facts. Sadly there is a hard core who continue to think its the dogs danglies ( the same types who also think we should be sinking the migrant boats rather than allow them on UK soil ).

Yes, if we want a Brexit thread, let's start one. This is about industrial relations on the British railway system.

I don’t wish to discuss this further, but for the record, the RMT asked its membership before deciding on it’s stance on brexit. From what I could see, in general (not RMT specific), union members were around 50/50 on brexit. So as this is appropriately in line with how the population voted across the country, it’s not relevant to this topic.

The RMT being mentioned at all wasn't relevant to begin with. This was about Unite. I merely pointed out the fact RMT were part of the problem in what we ended up with and that's an utter shambles to be honest.
