I don't think we will know, trees will fall on railway lines during the night but as no trains will be running it will not be reported and people will presume that trains could've run ok.

A fair amount of abuse towards southern on twitter. Of course it's southerns fault that the weather is bad...

FCC have just announced on twitter no trains until after 0900. Looking forward to the colourful and entertaining angry replies!

That is ridiculous.... Sometimes i just can't believe the attitude of some people.

Me either! 0440 start for me tomorrow, desperately trying to find someone to car share with as I don't fancy being in the roads on my tod!

Was relying on the train tomorrow. Luckily my shift manager is going to pick me up along with a member of despatch staff. There's dedication to duty :p

Well, we shall know by the morning whether the TOCs/National Rail made the right call, or whether cancelling the morning peak was an over-reaction off an unpredictable weather forecast.

I respect your opinion, although I stick with my own: this is a decision that could have been made in the early hours. Your patronising 'think it through' stuff was unnecessary.

Well it was necessary as you clearly haven't thought it through. Even if the storm comes to nothing it's better to be safe than sorry and certainly better to give people as much warning as possible.

You honestly think that announcing it at 4am would work at all?...how many commuters do you honestly believe get up any earlier than they absolutely have to in the morning? Most are probably up far too late to change their plans.

You honestly would prefer the TOCs and NR keep quiet and then risk seriously letting hundreds of thousands of commuters and businesses down in the morning?

Please let us know your master plan - how would you handle this if in NR/TOCs shoes as you seem to believe you know best?

Anyone know if the last trains tonight (midnight, 1am, say) on SWT are supposed to be affected?

Any news from TfL? Their website says nothing, but it says nothing about the NR services which are off either.

Those moaning about the late starts would be the same people slating the TOC and Network Rail if a train travelling at 90mph smashed into a tree it only saw 5 seconds before impact at 6AM, potentially killing lots of people.

There is logic behind this. If you remove the trains, then people will stay at home - and then they also cant get hit by falling trees, debris etc.

A wind turbine has came down in Devon due to the strong winds too, if a large and heavy wind turbine gets knocked over, a small tree certainly could !!

Services are being suspended until about 09:00 tomorrow morning. Passengers encouraged not to travel. No mention of replacement buses.

Let's hope that the high winds and rain appear!!! :D

After quite wet weather this last week "down south" - and with heavy winds etc forecast - it is a receipe for a potential disaster - especially say in Surrey and Sussex with a thin subsoil and a chalk base , giving much scope for already "loose" vegetation cover and trees to come tumbling down. Not much fun of course - but very prudent -

Train Operators and NR therefore are being sensible - and they do of course carry the safety card.

FCC is now saying no services from midnight (the closedown had previously been unspecified) until it is safe to do so, which is 'unlikely to be until after 0900 Monday'.

Also, revised timetable confirmed, far fewer services, some lines may remain closed. The advice not to travel is unconditional, does not exclude essential journeys and is in bold. All that on the advice of Network Rail.

Out if interest where is that from? Their website currently say travel only if essential...

"Heavy rain and high winds are forecast tonight and into Monday.

First Capital Connect are not expected to run a service until 09:00 on Monday 28 October, with an amended timetable after that. Confirmation will be posted here when available and it is advised you check the latest travel information before starting your journey.

First Capital Connect are advising to travel only if your journey is essential.

Road conditions are also expected to be hazardous, so please allow extra time to reach the station and allow extra time for connecting trains.

Hmm, ". In the interests of safety, Network Rail have advised us not to operate any trains on our network from Midnight on Sunday until it is safe to do so,"

Why haven't the other operators announced a similar after-midnight shutdown?

I'm not sure. They may have done and they haven't announced yet.

The Thameslink route goes right through, so it would only take a need to shurdown from midnight on one side to shut the lot. I'm not so sure about Great Northern.

They are all now announcing late starts. I imagine they will all start announcing early shutdowns fairly soon.

Obviously in the dark with high risk of falling trees they will not be running trains. Introducing a blanket caution or line of sight driving in the dark will see trains running at 15-30mph at most places. Obviously consider the impact that will have on trains booked to run at 75-100mph.

http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/plan-your-journey/live-train-updates/ links to two incidents. The one at the top is the more recent, and the more drastic. I assume their out of hours people haven't noticed and taken the first one down yet.

Cheers-didn't see that one. Will wait to see what happens when the foreman phones back.

I hope The Highland Chieftain makes it up from Kings Cross on Monday as I am due to travel on it Southbound on Tuesday from Falkirk.

On Monday the southbound Chieftain is starting from Perth rather than Inverness so even if that happens Tuesday I should be okay.

Seat reservations have been lifted and people offered the chance to travel on Tuesday instead of Monday.

Full East Coast Emergency Timetable is on the EC website.

For once FCC has taken decisive (if a little drastic) action. At least I know there's no point in aiming for my usual train.

I certainly wouldn't want to be the driver that finds the first fallen tree in the darkness.

Given the "robust" nature of the OHLE, I suspect that there might be some infrastructure problems to contend with tomorrow.

Perhaps there would be less of a safety issue if the overheads were a bit more sturdy and the trains were being hauled by nice heavy locomotives!

I've seen what is provisionally running tomorrow, looks like a Sunday service with ALL services timed to go no faster then 60mph - all Outers are 8 cars except on the Kings Lynn branch/the services calling at the Villages between Royston and Cambridge which will be 4 cars.

In other words, it's going to be fun tomorrow....
