If memory serves correct, there are 100mph sections on the Edinburgh - Glasgow via Linlithgow line. Not sure if there may be some between Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds and York

The Brighton Mainline is cleared for 100mph and I'd hazard a guess the 377's reach it between London Bridge and East Croydon, so maybe the 171's do there? That'd be my guess, but, I know the 455 operated Tattenham fasts run down the fasts so maybe they have to stick to 75 mph.

Oh, and the 171's are allocated to Selhurst, so when the Brighton to Ashford units run back up the BML to South London, they must hit it then.

Oh, and another thought, when the ONE/NX ones used to come down to Liverpool Street. They must have hit it there.

(I know you said 170 before someone gets pedantic, but its the same unit really in this respect)

When they operated Birmingham - Liverpool, MML and Norwich - Liverpool (between Peterbourgh and Grantham) I guess they reached 100 mph regually.

I'm certain the stretch of the BML north of East Croydon is restricted to something well below 100 - something between 60 and 75 depending on the stretch, and the 455s pretty much match the faster stock timewise on fast London Bridge - East Croydon runs.

There was a time when South West Trains had it's 170s out on Waterloo - Salisbury - Exeter services, so there would have been plenty of 100mph line east of Basingstoke to work with.

But as they had quite a bit of work coupled to 159s they would have often been limited to 90mph because of that.

The gradient from New Cross gate to Norwood Junction is rising at 1 in 100 and no way if the line speed was 100 would a 377 or a 171 reach it, If the line speed is the same as when I signed that route it is 70mph on the fast and 60mph on the slow maximum speeds. The only section of line that I recall being 100 on the line to Brighton was on the approach to Gatwick Airport, at a push you would just touch 100 in a 319 with a run up before OTDR and then have to brake for a PSR.

Inspired by express sprinters 90mph running, what Class 170 Turbostar trains run at their top speed of 100mph? Or is their 100mph top speed just a future proofing thing?
Thanks
John

If LM have a 170 on the Leamington Spa run they will hit 100 and the clumans easily get there, of course their 172 will get there easily. The unit speed for a 170 is 100mph able to do 110mph (proofing speed)

I'll throw 168's into the discussion too because they are essentially the same train. They run at 100mph all the way from Wembley Stadium (though they probably wont be doing 100mph until Northolt) to the Souldern viaducts near Aynho junction, which is about half way between Bicester and Banbury. There are a couple of slacks, 75 down to 60 through High Wycombe station, and a couple of places between Saunderton & Princes Risborough where it drops to 85 or 80, but they are relatively short stretches of track on a good 55 mile section of 100mph running.

They will do 100mph from just south of Lapworth to Widney Manor too. A 170 can also achieve that if it is on a Snow Hill - Leamington Spa run, though LM stopping patterns will almost certainly prevent it.

A couple of other examples where the Turbostars would have been maxed out frequently and consistently - on the ECML with Hull Trains, and on the MML under Midland Mainline.

Do any of the CrossCountry routes worked by 170s see any 100mph running?

As others have said line speed between New Cross Gate and Norwood Jct is 60 on the slow and 70 on the fast. In the down direction it is a struggle to reach line speed on almost all stock because of the rising gradient up to Forest Hill, especially 455/456 where reaching 60 is rare, even taking full power. 171s can be a bit gutless too.

I don't sign the coastal routes so I don't know about down there, but the fastest the Uckfields will go is 85 on the up between Woldingham and Sanderstead; even here, 377s on East Grinsteads only get up to 85 when ECS or the occasional non-stop run as there's not enough time to get up to line speed before needing to brake for the next stop. The wobbly bit over Riddlesdown viaduct is quite fun at 85.

As has been said there is only one short section if 100 on the BML at gatwick but only 319s are cleared to do 100 on that section. 377/171 are limited to 90 on the southern region. The only lines they are cleared to do the ton on are the midland line north of st pancras and (just recently) the west coast line nirth if willsden.

Between Birmingham New Street and Derby I would have thought, that has stretches of 125 mph track.

To answer the OPs question, 170s do reach 100 around Birmingham as well as throughout parts of Scotland (definately Edinburgh-Aberdeen but also parts of the highland line to).

Of course, the first batch of Turbostars were operated on the Midland Main Line & notwithstanding the stopping patterns, I expect they would have attained 100 mph regularly?

Mind you, that's a few years back now.

Scotrail 170's run at 100mph constantly. All the way from Falkirk to Glasgow, Larbert to Stirling and Perth and loads of other bits all over the network.

All Ipswich to Cambridge/Peterborough hit 100mph between Ipswich & Stowmarket. Following the over-running engineering works & mess up at Haughley the other morning a 5-car 170 combo worked a special from Ipswich to Liverpool St & then the 07.55 return to Norwich.

Ooh, any idea what units worked it?
Would be nice if the 2 car unit was 170270 then at least the liveries would match :P

The 378s don't seem to be affected as much on this section ?

They don't run on the fasts (lorol drivers don't even sign the fasts) but 377s still struggle, rarely touching 70 until the gradient drops at forest hill.

Nothing will get 60 between stations on the slow as they are too close together (can't renember getting 60 with a 377 on stoppers when I used to sign the road). Not between new x and forest hill anyway-may touch 60 between forest hill and Sydenham.

I now sign the GN route for FCC but was a driver for southern in the metro area (so signed the london bridge-east croydon route) up until about 3 years ago.

As I said in my last post, as far as I remember you couldnt get 60 between most of the stations if a stopper in a 377, 378s may be a bit nippier but I doubt they get 60 up the bank from new cross to brockley/honour oak/forest hill.As far as I remember I would average about 45/50 between those stations with a 377, less in a 455/6.

I am happy to be corrected though, as I say, 378s may be a bit nippier.

The 377/5's will just touch 70 at forest hill in the down direction but only just ( speed set on), a 319 will be there or there abouts as well. A 319 will trump a 377/8 every time on DC but come to AC a 319 will loose every time.

Very nice. Well despite the adverse gradient leaving Brockley for Honor Oak Park the usual is 55 with the best 378 units just managing 60. They are very nippy :)
