Which is the longest tunnel on the NR network?
Which normal timetabled service includes the most tunnels?
Is it correct to assume that most tunnels on the network were built in the second half of the 19th Century?
Has any would-be driver failed his training because he discovered that he could not face driving through a tunnel?

If excluding the Channel Tunnel, then (IIRC) its the Severn, then the Mersey.

According to wikipedia (What could possibly be wrong)? its The Severn, then the mersey, with Totly coming in at third place then my ol' friend Standedge bringing up the runners up place.

How about Ponsbourne Tunnel on the Hertford Loop which at 2,648 yards is the longest tunnel in the eastern counties of England and the last to be built by traditional methods.

I was reading a book called us biggest things and it included tunnels and stats.
It said Severn, then totley and the stanedge I believe, but unsure

Although there are the obvious exceptions of the tunnels on HS1 and the Channel Tunnel itself, it would be fair to say most were built in the second half of the 19th c.

Regarding most tunnels per regular passenger service, perhaps the Bradford Interchange-Halifax line might be a contender? It has five tunnels -Bowling, New Furnace, Wyke, Lightcliffe and Beacon Hill, in 8 miles.

as well as highest total, what's the highest % of a service in tunnels? Obviously, off the National Rail network, the victoria and W&C lines of the underground plus the Glasgow subway win hands down- W&C gets bonus points for having its depot deep down

The Argyle line between Dalmarnock and Anderson has got to be a contender? or is a sequence of uninterrupted tunnels, so it doesn't count?

Well, any train to Kings Cross (apart from Hertford Loop services) go through nine tunnels between Stevenage and Kings Cross, I know there is at least one between Grantham and Peterborough so that makes 10 for all EC services at least.

Depends how you define a tunnel or a bridge, but between North Shields and Tynemouth there are about 12 IIRC.

There was a rumour doing the rounds that there was an EWS driver based at Dollands Moor who was claustrophobic. The rumour named a driver who was based there but I never knew if it was genuine or not. Consider the core routes of that depot.....................

Merseyrails New Brighton to Liverpool Central service spends approx 13 minutes above ground (New Brighton - Birkenhead Park) and then around 14 mins for the rest of the journey. It then spends 9 mins back to B'head Park (in tunnels) and then 14 mins 'outside' to New Brighton. This is a 50 min journey of which around 23 mins (46%) are underground. They're timetabled by Merseytravel as two journeys (making the first half 52% underground) but I expect that is more to avoid confusion.

Tunnel and bridge are verbs as well as nouns: surely tunnels are dug and bridges built?

I would extend that towards Littleborough to include the following tunnels in the next 15 miles :-
Bankhouse.
Sowerby Bridge
Weasel Hall.
Horsfall.
Castle Hill.
Millwood.
Winterbutlee.
Dean Royd.
Summit East.
Summit.
Summit West.

This must be north of Enfield Chase as I never knew there was a tunnel on the Hertford Loop. Which stations are either side of the tunnel? I might take a ride tomorrow.
