CCTV shows man pushing trolley on to Euston railway tracks

CCTV footage has revealed the moment a train struck a suitcase trolley deliberately pushed on to tracks at one of the UK's busiest stations.

The video also shows the offender walking along the platform after pushing the trolley on to the line at Euston station in central London.

The incident happened at about 09:00 BST on Tuesday August 6.

British Transport Police (BTP) said no-one was injured but they were keen to speak to the man in the video.

'Dangerous actions'

Insp James Tyrrell, of BTP, said: "As shown in the footage, he approached a suitcase trolley, which was on the platform, and suddenly pushed it on to the tracks, before walking off from the scene..

What an idiot, I hope they can trace who he is and throw the book at him.

If you look at the dates on these BTP clips, you will usually see that the event took place weeks ago, and yet the message is always 'can you id?' etc.

So what are they playing at? Clearly the videos are available almost straightaway. I can only think of two reasons. One is, they didn't want to give the perp the chance to get away (but to where could anyone flee for these relatively minor offences) or change their appearance. Second is that they have in fact already arrested the perp but could do with some second witness as he /she is disputing the video is of them.

Any other explanations?

Its probably because the police have got nowhere trying to identify him and are now asking for help from the public.

It does seem odd to wait so long, unless it's because they're looking for more witnesses to identify him.

You'd think that BTP would have Tweeted such a photo within minutes/hours on its own Twitter feed, asking for information - and also showing just the sort of thing it/the railway has to deal with.

It's probably less likely at a station like Euston (especially given the type of luggage he is carrying), but the police often review CCTV on other days to see if if the perpetrator is a regular traveller as they have a reasonable chance of keeping a watch and arresting them on the spot should they return. Once footage is in the public domain there is a high chance that the person will not return. That's the reason in other cases, but I think less likely in this instance.

I agree, but just out of interest, what would that 'book' contain? Criminal damage, possibly?

Something like this perhaps?

Offences Against the Person Act 1861 - Section 32

Whosoever shall unlawfully and maliciously put or throw upon or across any railway any wood, stone, or other matter or thing, or shall unlawfully and maliciously take up, remove, or displace any rail, sleeper, or other matter or thing belonging to any railway, or shall unlawfully and maliciously turn, move, or divert any points or other machinery belonging to any railway, or shall unlawfully and maliciously make or show, hide or remove, any signal or light upon or near to any railway, or shall unlawfully and maliciously do or cause to be done any other matter or thing, with intent, in any of the cases aforesaid, to endanger the safety of any person travelling or being upon such railway, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof shall be liable, at the discretion of the court, to be kept in penal servitude for life or to be imprisoned.

I think you mean Section 32?

Yes, but since 1948, one can no longer be held in penal servitude or imprisonment with hard labour (most unfortunately, in the case of the gentleman shown in the video)

It is still in force and does occasionally get used, though life imprisonment is out of the question in this case, there are many factors to consider in sentencing including legal precedents and sentencing guidelines.

If he is ever caught I doubt if he'll be jailed.

I wouldn't be so sure. I could well imagine a short jail term, especially if he has any previous. Depending on where the trolley landed it could quite easily have been flicked up at speed and caused serious injury to anyone in the vicinity. I wouldn't have wanted to be the driver either.

We'll see, obviously a train wouldn't be entering Euston at speed although it could have been dangerous at another location

Most DM comments either come from happily pensioned expats in the Dordogne or bored sh++itl++s pedants in the back of beyond , who as far as public transport are concerned last used a train to get to school from Orpington to Bickley in 1964.

What struck me as odd is just how casual he is about the whole incident. He just strolls right up to the trolley, pushes it and then wanders off. A Moron of the highest order.

At least the majority of our vast alumni do ensure civilised and particular debate.

As for the trolley guy... Just another idiot, sadly.

Only he knows why he did it, maybe he has some sort of mental health problem?

I've come across a wide variety of people in my career with many different types of mental impairment, I have yet to meet someone who would do this as a result of that. If this is the case he needs to be found quickly and evaluated, otherwise what's to stop him getting into a car and driving it in to someone or stabbing someone with a knife at random?

I would be in favour of letting this prat sample a little of Her Maj's hospitality.

If he comes forward himself and fully co-operates then maybe a suspended sentance and a lengthy period of community service- but if he gets that he should consider himself *very* lucky.

And anything less would be no justice at all.

I've seen people shove and hit things out of frustration before. Not making excuses for this idiotic behaviour, but I wonder if this individual was upset or frustrated by something? Watching the CCTV footage it's difficult to tell - and I must admit it looks quite casual.

Where's Ian Faletto when you need him?

Surely the chance of that would have been greater if the images had been in the paper within hours of their availability? He was with a large suitcase so he's possibly in Rio de Janeiro or Capetown (for instance) by now.

Hee Hee. I am just back from there. I was told by a shopkeeper in Bergerac that if I went to a certain town nearby I would find all these people sat around the square in bars, staring at each other for want of something better to do.

So we didn't go there!:D

The Spanish ex-pats even have their own newspaper and they are disgusting to read (unless you are of that way of thinking). :(

Indeed, most of the stupid stuff that I've seen done has been done on impulse, under peer pressure, or with the aid of alcohol.

I have mental health problems, get regularly frustrated and occasionally self-harm but I wouldn't dream of doing something like that.

Sorry, that is possible mitigation to a community sentance but not a reason this guy should get away with it altogether.
