There might be a problem if a station were to be expanded by more than one platform. Fortunately for Waterloo when the Euro platforms were built, they were on the side of the station with the higher platform number; had Waterloo been numbered the other way around, that is, starting with no 1 on the Windsor lines, the platforms would surely have had to be renumbered when the new ones came into operation.

I imagine in that scenario it could have been one place where having different 'public' numbers to what is on the signalling diagrams would make sense. In practice the International platforms were essentially treated as a different station to domestic Waterloo, so the numbering needn't be sequential. Using letters for the international platforms would be a non-starter though, as that's already done at Waterloo East.

The difficulty with Cardiff Central are the tiled platform numbers in the station subway, and the station being listed.

Is all of the station listed, including the subways?

Wiki says that "The station, its entrances and platforms, are Grade II listed." I know that the subway connected by the stairs is virtually unchanged, but the one connected by the lifts isn't by any means. I can't see that they would have been built at different times, but were they?

I'm not sure that two versions of the truth on platform numbers would help anyone 'establish a clear understanding'. Imagine the scenario of stopping traffic in a platform for whatever reason... Would the signaller have to ask which platform 5?!

In the 1950s London Bridge did not have a platform 5. The high level through platforms were 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. 1/2, 3/4, and 6/7 were all island platforms. Between the tracks that served platforms 4 and 6 there was a through track, not used at that time. Presumably that through track had been regarded as "platform 5".

Wasn't there a missing platform at London Bridge before the current rebuild started?

For some reason I'm thinking it was platform 7

Correct. I think it was lost when ye olde Platform 6 (Up Charing Cross) was straightened and lengthened for 12-car Networker operation in the early 1990s. Someone will no doubt correct me...

I thought Temple Meads had a platform 2 but its at the southern end of the station?

I knew about the missing platform 14 as I spent 20 minutes walking round looking at the layout and was wondering where the hell platform 14 was.

Platform 2 is right next to Platform 4, it isn't advertised as it is not used for public use but for stabling units throughout the day

Just after they discovered that the underlying pier structure couldn't take the weight. 1980s sometime - I cant really remember seeing all 5 platforms in use. Perhaps usage was infrequent before they actually got round to lifting the track.

I think you will find that Portsmouth Harbour Station lost platform 2 in the early 1990's,( I seem to think 1992), as result of various repairs made to the pier structure failing! However, these repairs where due to wartime bomb damage, which I was told was quickly and cheaply done, bands of steel around cracked piers then filled with cement! This information came from a retired railway man who work at the Harbour Station as it was repaired.

When I was a kid trainspotter Woking station was laid out as:

Platform 2 - Up Slow
Platform 3 - Up Fast
Platform 4 - Down Fast
Platform 5 - Down Slow
Platform 6 - Down Bay (used for parcels traffic only I think)

Platform 1 was an Up bay which had gone by my time.

I believe it was renumbered 1-5 during NSE days and before the construction of the central terminal platform?

Obviously some stations must be much easier to renumber than others.

I didn't think that 7 was ever used in the first place.

Wasn't it a London end bay platform way back when?

Isn't it that little south facing bay on the town side of the station? Not in public use now though.

I always believed it was where the car park now is on the opposite side of the station building, to the north east side of platform 1.

I looked into this a while back, what with being a uni student in the town. I believe you're correct that p2 used to be a north facing bay where the car park now is (the shelter extends a little across it). Not sure the south facing bay has ever been a numbered platform or not (going back to the previous posters post which I didn't quote)

It's updating signalling equipment that's the big hidden cost. The theatre indicators would all need re-configuring for a start, but lots of stuff in the control room too.
They did it for Reading? Was there so much new signalling, it was wroth while?

Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 only has P3 / P4 / P5 / P6 at the moment. I believe that P1 / P2 have been built but they are just sitting unused (their hasnt even been any track laid).

It can obviously be done if stations are completely re-built and re-signalled as was Reading. Indeed, the scale of the changes would have prevented the platforms from not being re-numbered.

Similarly for Temple Meads. It was resignalled way back in the 70s and the platforms were renumbered at the same time.
