Apart from everything! :D

it is not Gosforth but it is a perfectly decent area. Rough and ready but no worse than many other areas. There was a time in the late 90's when it was proper rough but it was improved. I lived in Heaton so know it well. Fenham, where I also lived, always seemed much rougher to me.

but then i don't feel out of place because much of my family lived/lives in similar run down northern working class areas.

BTW - Byker viaduct is a decent bit of civil engineering

PS- the roughest bit of the metro will be Meadow Well and Percy Main imo. Sid James is the funnest bit ;) ( lived there to !)

How about Green Lane on Merseyside? I went for a job interview in Tranmere in 1981: as a fresh young student from the cosy South-East, it was quite a culture shock, like stepping into the remains of the Industrial Revolution. Both the station and the area were terrifying, not much greenery on show. I can imagine that the place has probably changed a lot since then.

I didn't get the job, and the most memorable thing about the interview was that the person grilling me was an extremely large man called Mr. Cock.

Liverpool and its environs have changed beyond recognition since the early-80s. Much of the Wirral is nicer than a lot of the South East notwithstanding friendlier people. Even the weather isn't that bad - milder as it's coastal and not as much rain as you may think.

Possilpark and Parkhouse railway station sound rather nice and leafy, perhaps where one could observe little possils roaming wild in their natural habitat.
The reality is one of the most deprived areas of the UK. If your train ever stops there, don't bother getting off!

Dove Holes - sounds pastoral but has been voted Britain’s ugliest village.
Admittedly not the prettiest corner of the Derbyshire, but whilst Dove Holes doesn't appear on the front cover of too many Peak District calendars, this dubious "honour" was only awarded on the basis of some one-off Radio Five Live phone-in straw poll almost 20 years ago.

The famous Wirral micro-climate! Also appears to be teeming with Southern escapees these days.

Saint-Denis isn't in a nice area! Plenty of Italian stations which sound nice to British ears but which are in hovels too.

Sandwich isn't as tasty as you imagine it will be. I'm not sure what filling best represents that town.

Green Lane is not a pretty station but it is interesting and characterful.

Neither is it a pretty area but, hey against all odds, they still repair and build ships here whilst most of the country "creates value" as spreadsheet jockeys.

Bearing in mind all the old people who live in the old houses in the middle of Sandwich- Something mouldy!

Turkey Street anyone?

P.S. Think this thread may have drifted a tad off topic.

I'll just nip to the Watercress Line then return via Ham Street and then we've got a decent filling.

I used to volunteer on Peak Rail at Darley Dale in the early days and our consumption of Pot Noodles was such that I suggested it should be named the Pot Noodle Line.
