There are cathedrals (a mix of C of E and RC) in 27 towns (as opposed to cities) in the U.K.
I wonder (A) if they are all within a mile or two of a railway station
and (B) which rail service connects the optimum number
For the pedantic amongst you, all cathedrals within Greater London are excluded from the above total.

Well you can rule out St David's in Pembrokeshire for a start from question (A)!

Salford RC Cathedral is about half a mile away from Salford Central and just about within a mile from Salford Crescent (maybe just over). However, Salford is a city, though a strange one, so I guess you can rule that out.

I'm not going to check how far they are from each station, but FGWs Portsmouth to Cardiff Services must fare well at this - Portsmouth Catherdral, Salisbury, (Bath Abbey/Wells is fairly near though), Bristol, Newport, Cardiff.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds is not that far from the station; trains run to Cambridge (City without a Cathedral), Peterborough (Cathedral City) and Ipswich (just a big town!)

From York you can get to at least: Guildford, Blackburn, Middlesborough and Stevenage. But I'm not sure that's what you were asking.

Shrewsbury has a RC Cathedral, not sure if Shrewsbury is a town or a city? You can get to Cardiff, Milford Haven, Manchester, Crewe, Chester, North Wales and Holyhead, Birmingham and soon to London from Shrewsbury.

Also Brecon, St Asaph, Ripon, Southwell, Wells.
Millport (Cumbrae) just fails the 1 mile test from Fairlie.

Without adding them up I should think the Aberdeen-Penzance passes the most.

(Didn't see the town v city bit...).
St Asaph is now a city.

Doncaster Minster and Rochester Cathedral are certainly near to railway lines.

Rochester's an interesting one, having lost city status in 1998 due to the formation of a unitary authority.

Canterbury's two stations are about a mile apart and the cathedral is about half a mile from each.

Shrewsbury is a town.

Shrewsbury has an Abbey, not a Cathedral.

Cardiff has 2 Cathedrals; St Davids RC is within a mile of Queens St Station, but I'm not sure whether Llandaff Cathedral is more than a mile from Fairwater or Danescourt stations.

Are we talking direct or by road?

Lichfield catherdral is not too far from Lichfield City station, plus Lichfield Trent Valley station is less than 2 miles away.

Just doing a bit of research on this topic and until now I never realised how just few places have both a CoE and Catholic cathedral. By my reckoning it's just London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, Sheffield, Portsmouth & Norwich. Manchester and Salford have the pair between them.

It has a Roman Catholic Cathedral as well as the Abbey.

Norwich doesn't count then because it is a City, Ely is a City, Peterborough is a City, People need to stop naming cities when the OP asked for Towns.

Dornoch Cathederal was within a mile of Dornoch station - until the Dornoch Light Railway closed in the 1960s. The nearest station now is probably Tain about 8 miles away.

Brentwood, Essex. A RC Cathedral of little architectural merit. Honest !

I couldn't believe Clifton (Bristol) RC Cathedral was where it was when I first (accidentally) came across it, seemingly plonked down in a suburban street amongst some very ordinary houses. Must admit I do like a cathedral to look a bit grand: also I have an aversion to those that charge admission, on principle, but I don't want to get into a debate on that!

Rochester used to be a city, but no longer is classified, while having a cathedral so is therefore a Cathedral town.

Just a few minutes walk from Danescourt.

Blackburn's is a stone's throw away from the town station. The bus station used to separate the two before it moved site.

Thanks for your replies so far. I didn't perhaps make myself clear enough in the first post, as it certainly wasn't intended as a quiz question with right and wrong answers, the one mile distance just being a rough guide as to whether a town was to be visited with the primary aim of visiting its cathedral and giving an indication if it was within reasonable walking distance.
Do please keep 'em coming and please feel free to comment on architectural merit or other attributes.
