Berwick (Sussex) to Berwick (on tweed)

In the bad old days of Railtrack I know of a group of overhead line engineers who had travelled all the way from deepest East Anglian and arrived at Berwick (Suusex) by mistake instead of Berwick (on Tweed) with no overhead wires in sight and had to use the signallers internal phone to inform the Picop that the wouldn't be making that nights work.

Woking, Wokingham and Workington. I overheard someone on their mobile once as we pulled into Woking. They had someone meeting them at Wokingham.

London Road (Guildford) and London Radio (Brighton).

Remember an american couple boarding a manchester service asking me how they could get to liverpool street. I confirmed with them they meant liverpool lime street (which would explain the need to be on a manchester bound service at Reading) and directed them to the connection at stafford only for the TM to find out they trally wanted london liverpool street!

I was a bit bemused a while back when I asked for a return to Leicester and was given a London Travelcard. When I queried it, it was confirmed to me that it was the right ticket to Leicester Square.

Not seen Swinton (S Yorks) and Swinton (Gtr Manchester) yet.

Also I am sure there was a genuine case of a lady at Paddington who wanted to go to Turkey (via Heathrow presumably) who ended up in Torquay.

The Turkey/Torquay one I think is apocryphal, and featured in one of the late Sue Townsend's later Adrian Mole books.

A few that spring to mind (apologies if they've already been mentioned):
Bradford Yorks stns and Bradford on Avon.
Burnham and Highbridge & Burnham.
Denby Dale and Darley Dale.
Ashford (Middlesex) and Ashford International.
Hope (Derbyshire) and Hope (Flintshire).
Liverpool Street and Liverpool Lime Street.
Kirkby and West Kirby.

Oban and Holborn

I met a visiting academic from Tunisia in 1976 when we both got on the Irish mail (Emerald Isle?)at Bangor for Euston. He had attended the International Seaweed Symposium.

When we got to Chester he got out his diary in which there was a map of the British Isles.
He got out his plane tickets and rail tickets which included a return flight from Heathrow to Belfast and rail tickets to Bangor NI.
There were also rail tickets to Bangor from Euston which he had been provided with at the last minute in London.

As he had travelled overnight he had assumed that he had to cross the Irish Sea and was looking for it on his current daytime journey.

I once asked for a ticket to Burley Park (Leeds) at a North West ticket office and the ticket office man said "Did you say Burnley Park? I've not heard of that one."

Similar to that I've seen posts on here before that EMT services at Norwich are advertised as going to "Lime Street. Liverpool" rather than the usual "Liverpool Lime Street" so people don't misread the departure display as "Liverpool Street"

Gillingham Dorset and Gillingham Kent?

As a National Express steward I had a passenger cor Ashington, duly boards and makes herself comfortable. 3 hours later having fought the A23 traffic, crawled through Horsham and through the backroads to the lovely sussex village of Ashington. She says she dossnt recognise the place. She pulls out her ticket. Booked on the 525 not the 065. She wanted Ashington, Northumberland!

When I lived in Cambridge there would often be departures listed for

Kings Lynn
Kings Cross
Liverpool Street
Liverpool Lime Street

For a visitor, it's far from obvious which is the London train!

The only time I've had confusion at a ticket office was when the guy couldn't seem to hear the difference between Hamworthy and Tamworth.

On a ticket machine, the difference between Dalmeny and Dalmally has sometimes made me pause for a moment to check.

Quite common for passengers at Cambridge to get their Cross and Lynn mixed up! Even more amusing when the Cambridge Cruiser arrives with the front 4 cars continuing to Lynn and the rear 4 returning to Cross. Cue much confusion.

Kings Cross and Liverpool Street should be preceded by London unless it's on a departure display at a station within London.

My favourite story is about some American tourists who arrived in London and wanted to see the Tutenkamen exhibition at the British Museum. They asked for directions from a local and an hour later were found with a map on a certain common in South London which can be reached via the Northern Line

I'm sure someone on here once told a story of a passenger at Woking who wanted Lymington being directed to Leamington [Spa], or vice-versa.

So this is my first ever trivia quiz I've created, if I remember!

I wondered how many journeys there are between two stations that sound similar. For example:

Cottingham to Nottingham or Mottingham
Olton (Solihull) to Alton
Shoreham-by-Sea to Shoreham (Kent)
Ashford (Surrey) to Ashford International
Clapham Junction to Clapham (North Yorkshire)
Whitchurch (Hampshire) to Whitchurch (Shropshire) or Whitchurch (Cardiff)
Brighton to New Brighton
London Liverpool Street to Liverpool Lime Street
Kings Lynn to Kings Langley
Kirkby to West Kirby
Port Glasgow to Glasgow Central
Buxton to Buxted
Ilford to Ifield
Newport (South Wales) to Newport (Essex)
St Margarets (London) to St Margarets (Hertfordshire)
Cottingley to Knottingley
Oxford to Manchester Oxford Road

There are probably thousands!

Shalford and Shelford. On one occasion I requested a single to Shalford, and didn't notice until I had completed the journey that the ticket office had given me a single to Shelford. Thought it was a little expensive at the time!

There's also going to be problems between the two Waltons - on the Naze and on Thames.

Years ago, my aged aunt, travelling from Leeds to Leominster got put on a train to Leicester at Manchester Piccadilly. She ended up hours later in Shrewsbury via New Street and I went to get her. No mobile. We thought we'd lost her for good !

A relative of mine recently accompanied two friends from the USA, throughout a holiday they took in England, including London. Although this matter was, in this case, only theoretical: she recounted how one of these American ladies seemed totally unable to get her head round the fact that rail-travel-wise, Liverpool Street Station in London, has effectively nothing to do with Liverpool on Merseyside.

Similar to that I've seen posts on here before that EMT services at Norwich are advertised as going to "Lime Street. Liverpool" rather than the usual "Liverpool Lime Street" so people don't misread the departure display as "Liverpool Street"

and Hadders writes: "Quite common for passengers at Cambridge to get their Cross and Lynn mixed up! Even more amusing when the Cambridge Cruiser arrives with the front 4 cars continuing to Lynn and the rear 4 returning to Cross. Cue much confusion."

It can cross one's mind occasionally, to wonder whether the old railway companies might in some cases have done well to anticipate future confusion for passengers; and thus name their London termini differently. However, that would have required considerable crystal-ball-ownership -- and it's probably futile to do much to try to counter people's absolutely infinite capacity for getting things wrong.

The only time I've had confusion at a ticket office was when the guy couldn't seem to hear the difference between Hamworthy and Tamworth.

and jcollins writes: "I once asked for a ticket to Burley Park (Leeds) at a North West ticket office and the ticket office man said 'Did you say Burnley Park? I've not heard of that one.' "

Prompting a brief excursion "off the rails": I recall that in one of the IMO splendid "Flashman" novels by George MacDonald Fraser, Flashman is in the USA in 1849, on the Mississippi River, engaged in something which is considered "dodgy" at that time and place. He tries in great haste, to buy a steamboat ticket to escape his pursuers; suffers an exasperating conversation with a hard-of-hearing and elderly steamboat booking clerk. There's a misunderstanding about two similar-sounding, and to a British visitor, unfamiliar cities -- St. Louis, and Louisville. Flashy thinks that he's bound for one, but arrives at the other, where he definitely does not want to be -- mayhem ensues for our anti-hero.

It probably wouldn't have worked out like that, given that avoiding confusion isn't seen as important today. For instance, they propose to call a new Crossrail station accessed from London Liverpool Street and Moorgate after the former, despite there also being a proposal to build an "Old Oak Common" station with access both to Crossrail and to HS2 (and so to Liverpool).

I once asked at Euston, in my northern brogue, for what the timetable clearly says is "Gunnersbury", and after a lot of confusion and pointing to timetables, the clerk said "Ah, you mean "Gansbry".

In Tallinn, Estonia, I failed to pronounce the name of any suburban station the clerk recognised so I never got to ride on their nice new Stadler Flirts (I only had an hour to spare) .

I recall one lunchtime in the 1980s visiting the SNCF travel centre in Piccadilly to book some couchette tickets. I'd allowed plenty of time but in front of me was an American wanting to go to Lucerne. The clerk patiently outlined all the various options: day or night travel, various cross-channel routes, via Paris or cross-country, etc. Finally, after much deliberation, the customer settled on his preferred itinerary and the clerk presented him with his tickets. "Oh no" said the American "not Lucerne, I meant Lausanne". Imagine my frustration!

Potential confusion in Liverpool, if the proposed station at St James is re-opened, between that and James Street. I hope they will consider carefully.
