OK - I'll ask - what's the "Unna Way"?

At least if your train had arrived on platform 1, you wouldn't have had as far to run for your bus.:D

The "Unna Way" is the underpass that allows clockwise traffic on Huddersfield ring-road (or the "HüddersRing" ;) ) to cross the Bradford Road junction without conflicts. The entry portal can be seen from trains crossing the viaduct if you look to the left-hand side in the direction of travel. The name is taken from Huddersfield's twin town of Unna in Nordrhein-Westfalen, not far from Dortmund. The French twin-town of Besançon gets the "Besançon Bridge and Loop" over the ring-road for traffic arriving in town from the A629 from Halifax and the M62. This can be seen beyond the sidings adjacent to platform 8.

The bus was a gamble anyway- Yorkshire Tiger's recent recast means the best bet is to just get to the stop and hope!

I've yet to see a Merseyrail service in P2 at Hunts' Cross. It's signalled and has a juice rail to act as an alternative to P3 but I've yet to see a 507/8 in there!

The Branch Line Society Merseyrail charter last year used platform 2 of Hunts Cross and it was allegedly used by some late night Southport trains in the days prior too. Otherwise, it is extremely rare for Merseyrail trains to use P2.

Ah, thank-you for that.

I lived and worked in Golcar during the chaos of the 1970s whilst the ring road was being built, but didn't know Huddersfield has been twinned with Unna, nor that that underpass took the name.

It's had a sign saying "Unna Way" over the entrance portal for as long as I can remember, though for years I assumed it was a quirky way of saying "under" because the road goes underground briefly... it was only when I took part in a 6th form College exchange programme with a school in Unna that I realised what the name meant! The Besançon loop was not signposted for many years but was refurbished with signage about 10-15 years ago.

Technically the twinning is with The Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, rather than with just the town of Huddersfield.

Does anything ever use Platform 8 at Clapham Junction?

I've only alighted from platform 8 once, and that was when an Exeter - Waterloo was cancelled and a Salisbury - Waterloo stopped additionally at Clapham. I've also gone through the platform 7 loop non-stop as well due to late running the 159 ran nonstop from Basingstoke

Platform 8 must not be used unless there is an emergency and the train needs detraining. In the event of signalling problems that mean trains cannot use platform 7, trains must not call at 8 and passengers must circulate via London. I think if the doors were to be released at CLJ 8 then it now counts as an operational incident.

At the risk of taking this slightly off-topic, why so?

Because the PTI risk has been classed as excessive. I think there’s a very high step, combined with a steep curve of the track.

St Erth platform 4. I have memories of seeing passenger DMUs in platform 4 during the 1980s, perhaps during the summer peak of St Ives holiday travel. Were these in passenger service or just stabled?

I'm sure they can only enter platform 2 from the north and head back north again due to there being no juice rail south of there.

Platform 2 has seen sporadic use over the past few months, it is now possible for EMT to arrive from Lincoln into it. A number of trains have made use of this since it was made possible.
I arrived into Platform 2 yesterday from Lincoln, first time for me too, infact the first passenger service i have seen in there. I did see a random 47 go in and out once. We were booked into 5 yesterday but there was a 31 pulling some things going past and likely they changed it last minute. Made my connection for the Hull train from platform 0 even easier.

Trains calling at Wandsworth Common Platform 4 are exceedingly rare. The platform is locked out of service and only opened in the direst emergencies. DOO services are not normally to call there, and conductors (such as there are) must make sure the platform is unlocked if their train calls. Ironically, there are still DOO monitors, whereas Platform 2 has to make do with a mirror or manual dispatch!

Platform 3 is also rarely in use, but more likely to be - generally on the all-stations 0042 from Victoria, which sometimes calls at all the Down Fast platforms instead of the usual Down Slow ones. The step and gap is atrocious, as is dispatch visibility when a conductor has to work it (on Saturday -> Sunday nights). The same goes for the DF platform at Norbury.

I have seen that happen during engineering work albeit that was about 15 - 20 years ago - I actually traveled on one from platform 7 once. Pretty sure they used 8 as well at the same time.

GX have used all sorts of platforms at Victoria, but for commercial reasons (namely the fact that the Oyster/contactless readers on the barriers on 13/14 will charge more for Gatwick passengers than the ones on all the other Victoria platforms) it's far better for GTR's bank balance for the red trains to go into the red platforms!

During disruption, in particular, GX services will end up left, right and centre. The dedicated GX drivers don't sign half the diversions they used to, but I believe they can still use Platforms 7 & 8 as well as 9-19.

Platform 8 has had an interesting history from a route knowledge point of view - sometimes considered as part of the "Central" side of Victoria station for route learning purposes, and sometimes not. From a diagramming and signalling control point of view, it's really the latter. Platform 7 is definitely Victoria "Eastern" side.

(...an interesting little snippet, then: in Southern conductor route learning packs, which believe it or not still exist, I believe there is still a reminder that crews should familiarise themselves with the location of Victoria Platform 8. Apparently one poor soul once got a bit lost and tried hunting around the wall beside Platform 9 to get to 8, before giving up and cancelling a train...)

Puzzled, because I thought the connection between the two sides didnt exist till the 70s resignalling - have I got that wrong? - and it accesses 3-8. I realise the Eastern side has been relatively quiet since the boat trains went so I can understand the Central making a takeover bid :)

Looking on RTT for a trip I'm planning tomorrow and it looks like P2 @ Bradford Interchange is exclusively GC and poorly utilised. Do other services/operators use this platform?

They do. Interchange has 4 platforms but rarely are all occupied. All routes are accessible from all platforms but in my experience P4 seems to be used less often. 1 and 2 are the only ones long enough for GC but both are also used by Northern.

Not usually. GC can only use platform 1&2 as Platforms 3&4 are too short for Class 180s, especially as one service used to arrive as a double set. What will happen if Northern start running 6*23m trains as planned is a good question.

Not my experience, rare to be on a Northern train that uses 2.

No Northern trains from platform 2 today, all GC trains from that platform. Plenty of Northern services from 4. Realtraintimes

Guessing that's a relatively recent thing then, or I've just been lucky/unlucky! It's certainly not unheard of for Northern to use P2 anyway.

*Inserts West Norwood joke*

The bay at Wallgate also happens all day on the Kirkby trains whenever engineering work or other circumstances dictate a thinned out service towards Manchester - it was one of the measures post-Arena bombing back in May when Victoria was on lockdown for a few days for example.

Stopped at P1 at Wigan NW on a Northern 156 a few weeks ago , thought it was unusual

Trying to think of Glasgow Central , ive never seen a 380 in Platform 1 though maybe a Lanark service may of done . TPE in Platform 1 , cant recall that . Seen Pendos in 1, 2, 9 , 10 and 11 , apparantly a pendo was on P3 recently , they rarely go into 9 - 11 now . Not seen the sleeper depart from 1 in a long time though see it there in morning . Never seen a XC service 9 -11 .

Never seen a TPE service in P5 at Stalybridge (is it even possible?), in a similar vein P2 isn't used for much except terminating the Denton Flyer, and reversing ECS moves coming from Newton Heath TMD to head towards Piccadilly. I have however boarded a starting TPE service in P2.

(similarly, TPE in the Manchester Victoria bays).

ATW services in P1-4 of Manchester Piccadilly.

GatEx in the not-GatEx platforms at London Victoria (especially SE side)?
TPE in the Victoria bays have happened quite a few times now mostly when the Newcastle services have been cut to start and terminate at Manchester Victoria.

Last year no trains departed westwards from Cardiff Central from Platforms 0, 1 or 2, (not signalled anyway), Fast forward to present when currently and for a month everything except some limited turnbacks (Maesteg) is unable to use Platforms 3 and 4.
Everything using 0,1 and 2 due major Engineering work, Made possible after Xmas occupation last year. Noted a train to Rhymney departs from Platform 4 through the new connection, being formed off a Swanline terminator from Swansea.

You're basically making the same point as me, I think I just phrased it badly and we are looking at things from two different angles! Yes, Platform 8 is the Eastern side, but is learnt and somewhat adopted by the Southern (ie. Central side) crews as one of "their" platforms. Southern/GX do not typically use 1-7, with 7 in occasional use, and the rest generally on very rare diversions of services when they also run via Brixton.

It may just be me but I wouldn't describe Victoria's SE operations as "relatively quiet" but they certainly feel a little more relaxed and upbeat than the Southern/GX scrum. I think it is something about the service level, which usually seems fairly sustainable to me, as well as the better atmosphere caused by the nice trainshed, etc.

I can't remember exactly when the connections between the two sides have differed over the years. It's interesting to see the route indicator lettering for trains leaving Victoria - to access the Brighton Mainline routes, the lettering in the "theatre boxes" is E-J (exc. I, which could be confused for a number "1"). E being for the Down Brighton Slow, through to J being the Brighton Reversible, you get the idea.

Glad we basically agree! I am fairly certain there was no running connection pre 1979 that allowed Central trains to trespass, but can't quickly find evidence.
