Trivia: Local bus services that use bypasses

In Birmingham the X3/4/5/15 (Nation Express) and 110 (Arriva) use the A38(M) "Aston Expressway" to bypass Aston.

Actually the X3 does stop in Newport, but in Malpas not the city centre.

Stagecoach X24 and Anslow's 24X use the A4042 and don't stop between Newport and the outskirts of Cwmbran.

Stagecoach X15 uses the A467 Rogerstone bypass.

Borders Buses 253 and East Coast Buses X7 both use the A1 Tranent and Musselburgh bypasses.

First Essex C9 route between Chelmsford City centre and Beaulieu via North Springfield uses the Chelmer Valley Road which is an inner relief route constructed in the late 80s to by pass Broomfield Road, Broomfield itself and most of Springfield. This gives the residents of Beaulieu and North Springfield a fast route to the city centre

401 - uses the A50 in various parts
X12 - runs non stop between Burton and Lichfield via the A38

90 - runs between Bingham and Newark with a few deviations, using the A46

High Peak
199 - runs between Manchester Airport and Stockport via the M56
Transpeak - bypasses a few villages on the A6

Yes, however Skylink Express, a separate service, runs from Nottingham to Clifton Park and Ride, then non stop via the A453 to East Midlands Gateway and the airport.

There was in Yorkshire Rider days an X37 that used the bypass, came off to serve Elland town centre and then came back on to continue it's journey.
There was also an X36 which may have stayed on the bypass and missed Elland.

Back to today, Keighley Bus Company 862 runs via the Aire Valley Road between Keighley and Silsden while the 60 uses it between Keighley and Crossflatts and between Bingley and Cottingley.

The X36 did use Elland bypass from end to end. It lasted way longer than the X37.

Ossett is an oddity which has had two bypasses. The first has since been swallowed by expansion of the town, leading to a more substantial dual carriageway bypass being built. I'm not aware of any bus routes that use the current bypass but the Arriva 268 (among others) uses the old bypass rather than serving the town centre and bus station.

The 89 Knutsford - Northwich uses the A556 between Northwich Road and Pickmere Lane. It's predecessor, the 289, used significantly more of the bypass.

A section of the A61 Ripon bypass is used by local services RS2 and RS3. Other services may use it in part as they are timetabled at the bus station and then a village where the logical route would be to use the bypass:

Dales & District 136 to Melmerby Business Park
North Yorkshire Council 147 & 150 to Thirsk

Also Connexions X1B uses part of the A658 *Harrogate southern bypass" at Knaresborough between the B6164 and A59.

I've seen serveral buses in the Greater Manchester area that run as normal local stopping buses for parts of their route, but also have sections where they run non-stop along fast segregated roads/motorways.

Examples include the 199 skyline (runs as a regular bus from Buxton to Stockport, then hops on the motorway to the airport), the x41 red express which runs with very few stops from Manchester to a motorway junction east of Summerseat, I presume running along the motorways, then turns into a regular stopping bus and the x43 Witchway which seems to run as a regular stopping bus from Manchester to Prestwich, then run non-stop along motorways/segregated dual carriageways to Rawtenstall then it seems to become a regular stopping bus again from Rawtenstall to Burnley.

Arriva in North Wales routes a handful of buses of its Service 12 Rhyl-Llandudno via part of the A55 Expressway. They join at Pensarn and leave at Llandulas and vv. It's only a short section, and simply avoids the centre of Abergele and Tescos.

Given the number X12, the westbound is a positioning move to Colwyn Bay for a service back to Rhyl at 5.50am in the morning, and eastbound there are a couple of journeys around 6pm virtually empty stock back to the depot in Rhyl, as the whole service is provided by buses from Rhyl depot.

The evening return services could be quicker if they used more of the A55, but I once did an X12 from Llandudno to Rhyl depot in 45 minutes, where the driver was keen to finish work and had a rather cavalier attitude to timing points in between!

Also in North Wales, the T2 uses the Y Felinheli bypass between Bangor and Caernarfon, leaving the 5C to trundle the old route. That bus also uses part of the Dolgellau by pass to reach the stop in Eldon Square. Were it running 60 years ago, it would have been along the tracks through Dolgellau station - literally a rail-replacement service!
