I'm not sure if this is techincally 'trivia', but I thought of a new game.

What are the earliest services of the day for each of the TOCs?

I have as follows:

AW: 1H78 0326 Chester to Manchester Piccadilly
CC: 2B01 0420 Shoeburyness to London Fenchurch Street
CH: 2H01 0505 Aylesbury to London Marylebone
EC: 1Y03 0445 Newcastle to London Kings Cross
EM: 1C01 0436 Leicester to London St Pancras International
ES: 9O80 0540 St Pancras International to Paris Nord
GA: 1B98 0340 London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport
GC: 1A60 0645 Sunderland to London Kings Cross
GN: 2P99 0325 Peterborough to London Kings Cross
GW: 1L05 0352 Swansea to London Paddington
GX: 1D06 0330 London Victoria to Gatwick Airport
HC: 2T08 0442 London Paddington to Heathrow Airport Terminal 4
HT: 1A91 0602 Beverley to London Kings Cross
HX: 1Y22 0507 Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 to London Paddington
IL: 2U02 0535 Ryde St Johns Road to Ryde Pier Head
LM: 2K02 0330 Milton Keynes Central to London Euston
LO: 2C02 0511 Watford Junction to London Euston
ME: 2C00 0536 Moorfields to Chester
NT: 1H40 0338 Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Airport
SE: 2D02 0406 Gillingham to London Charing Cross
SN: 2A07 0259 Three Bridges to London Victoria (a tricky one, as Southern has a 24 hour service!)
SR: 1B14 0453 Inverness to Edinburgh
SW: 2F02 0425 Guildford to London Waterloo (I thought there used to be like a 0330 from Woking?!)
TL: 2A76 0242 Bedford to St Pancras International
TP: 1P03 0252 York to Manchester Airport
VT: 1R20 0428 Glasgow Central to London Euston
XC: 2K51 0444 Cambridge to Stansted Airport

I stand happy to be corrected on these trains but for those TOCs who operate a 24 hour service (such as Southern and First TransPennine) it's tricky to decide when the first service officially is!

GA 03.40 Liverpool St to Stansted Airport I would suggest.

That is considered the first train of a new day where as the 00.01 LST - GDP is part of the previous day's service.

Yes that's what I was thinking too. This is where it gets confusing too, especially with Southern and First TransPennine!

Couldn't find this one anywhere!

So surely we need the first trains after 04:30am?

The question was not about the first service that yesterdays ticket would no longer be valid on. The question was what is the earliest service of that day, the key words being "earliest" and "day". A new day starts at 00.00, therefore the first service to start its journey on or after that time must be the earliest service of that day. The fact that yesterdays ticket is still valid on it (or that for example the driver of that train's diagram started on the previous day) is irrelevant.

Although not quite the earliest, the 04:20 AGA service from Norwich to Liverpool St is a killer of a job for the driver as then still has to work the 10:45 Sheringham afterwards.

Chiltern run a 00:05 MYB - BAN which is earlier than a 05:XX anywhere to anywhere and I guess that is where the problem with the question lies. What counts as the first train of the day? First one after midnight or first one after a few hours with a break in service?

How can 03.40 be regarded as "earlier" than 00.01. If I look in the TT for the first train tomorrow (Wednesday) from Liverpool St then it is at 00.01 not 03.40.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/LST/2015/02/04/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

Well on the unit diagrams ithe 03.40 to SSD is at the start of the diagram (as is the ECS from Orient Way), where as the 00.01 to GDP us at the end of the unit diagram. ;)

Yes all very arbitrary and not worth arguing about :)

The sooner that High Output Ballast Cleaner clears off the better then. No one spare to take the 10.45 Sheringham off your hands?

Wouldn't ATWs earliest train actually be the 0150 Fishguard Harbour - Swansea? On my phone so havent checked others, I just know of the 0150 to Swansea. Therr might be earlier ones from elsewhere..

Northern have a 00.44 Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly
TPE have an 00.01 Manchester Airport to Blackpool North

Both services currently amended due to engineering at airport.

If the 0429 previous day validity rule is applied then the 0434 from Reading to Gatwick would be in with a shout.

I personally would consider this to be the same day as the previous, if that makes sense?

I basically consider the first train of the day to be the service you would wake up and catch. If I was getting the 0150 Fishguard I wouldn't bother going to bed!

These are very sad times. Whoever thought that a mainline driver coming on at such an ridiculous hour would have to see their entire shift out <(

Because common sense says that in these circumstances it is. You could say the same about the TL services - you could argue 0142, 0242 or 0312 (or even just after midnight if you wanted to be silly).

But it's pretty obvious the context in which the OP meant it (listing all the other TOCs services) so would agree that it's the 0242 TL service.

Perhaps the question could be, whats the first train that runs where staff have to come in for it who are not working through the night. The Southern 24 hours trains are run by staff who work through the night. For staff that have to come in that day the first train for us down in Brighton is the 03.50 (04.05 dept) to Victoria.

In the same way that a TL 03.42 Bedford to Brighton is an early turn Bedford driver, although they are relieved at Blackfriars by a night turn Brighton driver!

Surely the earliest service of the day would be the service in the first column of the timetable booklet?

Some show the last services of the night before in them, however. For example (completely made up), if there was a 2345 Paddington - Reading which called at Slough, it would be after midnight and some timetables would therefore show it as one of the first services of the next day. But I wouldn't consider that to be the next day's service...!

Virgin do this, according to their timetable their is:
MO 0009 Birmingham International-Wolves
MX 0001 Rugby-Wolves
MO 0012, SO 0028 and MSX 0029 Milton Keynes-Wolves
MO 0001 Stockport-Piccadilly
MO 0005 Runcorn-Liverpool

... All of which of course actually originate from Euston and are shown again in their entirety at the end of respective table.

(As far as I can remember, only the 0001 Stockport-Piccadilly used to be shown pre-December 2014. Virgin did a bit of a rejig with the presentation of some tables last December, so I'm guessing they got included then.)

Would another way of looking at the problem be to look at the first service after the Christmas break when there was no previous day service?
