Today (18th Feb), the 1102 London Midland to London Euston came to a halt for a couple of minutes at the east (up fast?) platform at Norton Bridge when coming off the single track chord from the Stone direction awaiting a slot on the main line. Needless to say, nobody was allowed to get on or off. Given the position of the signal, I guess this may be a regular occurrence.

Sadly my mobile phone didn't boot up sufficiently quickly for me to take a photo out of the window.

I think all the LM service from Stone to Stafford use the bi-di chord and avoid the flyover, otherwise they would have to cross back to access Platform 1 at Stafford. I'm not sure that particular line identifies as a fast or slow since the remodelling

Manton and Ashwell between Peterborough and Leicester have very visible platforms.

Rodley on the line between leeds and Shipley. When travelling in Leeds direction the old station building is a house and the platform a chicken coup

Here in the South East the following disused stations (on lines still open) with platforms still in situ..
Chislet Colliery Halt (closed 1971) between Sturry and Minster
Crawley old station resited in 1969
Selsdon (Oxted line platforms- closed 1959) originally 4 platform station
Folkestone East- sections of platforms- closed 1965
St Leonards West Marina (mentioned previously)
Bishopsgate Low Level-- one platform survives in good condition- closed 1916
Bow Road- closed 1949 (between Gas Factory Jn - Bow Jn) line not in regular passenger use.

Unsure if Milton Range Halt platforms closed 1932 between Gravesend and Hoo Jn still survive. Went past there about a year ago and am sure the concrete platforms were still standing

Also Bishopstone Beach Halt, formerly Tidemills between Newhaven and Seaford closed 1942 one platform mostly complete other semi demolished but concrete running in board exists as do two SR concrete lamp post on each platform.

Eltham Well Hall was completely demolished immediately after the opening of the present Eltham station. The extension of the A2 road was built through the site of it.

Ah, but I can still see it in my mind's eye.:)

Brightside (two platforms flanked by goods loops), replaced by Meadowhall, and Attercliffe.

Platforms 1 and 2 of the current Meadowhall station are on the site of the former "Wincobank " then named "Wincobank and Meadow Hall" then again "Wincobank" before its closure in 1956. Brightside station and the new Wincobank station co-existed for several months. Only a few trains a day called at Brightside. It was possible to travel from Meadowhall to Brightside.

Platforms 3 and 4 at the new Meadowhall(to/from Barnsley) were opened before 1 and 2.

For a short time fares to/from Sheffield from 1 and 2 were 5p more expensive than
from 3 and 4. Why?
Trains to Sheffield could use platform 4.

I believe the original Stevenage station had 4 platforms before it was moved 73 chains south in 1973. Queensbury had six platforms but of course closed to passengers in 1955.

The original Stevenage station had two platforms , on the slow lines. Only local trains called there. The new station, with platforms serving both fast and slow lines was built nearer the New Town centre and took over the Inter City calls that had previously been made at Hitchin.

I'm not sure of the connection between these two points? Why would the ability to use platform 4 affect the fare?

I have no idea if the "...the ability to use platform 4 affect(ed) the fare.." on the Barnsley Sheffield route (mainly platform 3 and rarely 4) made it more expensive than from platform 1 from Rotherham. Perhaps it was for the privilege of going the wrong way or for scampering down the muddy slope from Tyler Street.

More likely, as the fare from Brightside was the same as from Meadowhall 3 (and rarely 4) and at least for a time only trains from Barnsley stopped at Brightside, that route set the fare. Later when 1 and 2 opened somebody on that route chose to set a new fare.

Quite possibly, I was on an XC service between Brum and Manchester (can't remember which direction) last summer which also paused at the same location.

Potton and Blunham on the Bedford-Cambridge line still have recognisable station buildings (and platforms with canopy in the case of Potton), as does Turvey on the Bedford-Northampton line.

2 on the Chiltern route..

Haddenham. The original station and not H & T parkway
Brill. Bicester side of Brill tunnel a platform can be seen in the undergrowth

There are also bits of the platforms still in situ at Ardley, and a tiny bit of platform left at Ruislip Gardens. The station building at Aynho Park Platform survived until a couple of years ago, and the station building at the main Aynho station (on the Banbury - Oxford line) survives as a private house.

The old Stevenage station had 4 platforms serving all 4 lines. Some Inter City trains did call there. see this and other photos...

Been nearly 50 years since any train has passed through these stations.

Aberthaw is still largely intact and the main building at Southerndown road is in excellent condition. Both are on the Vale of Glamorgan line.

The station building at Diggle on the Trans-Pennine main line survives as a private house, but only the lie of the land gives away that there were platforms there once. So in better shape than other closed stations on the route- there's no trace of Golcar or Longwood & Milnsbridge at all any longer.

I believe the platforms survive at Wadsley Bridge on what was once the Woodhead route, as it was still used for football specials to Hillsborough until at least 1989. Now only passed by freight services to and from the Steelworks at Stocksbridge now though.

Are the platforms at Southport St Lukes still there? It's been a while since I travelled that line. Also, ISTR some old platforms not long after you come out of the tunnel heading towards Hunts Cross from Liverpool Central. There were also platforms in a cutting on the Bootle Branch which I remember from my days travelling to Lime Street on the DMU from Southport...

London, Surrey... bit of a blur round here...
I know it's been mentioned already, but I can confirm that Tiverton Junction's platforms are still pretty much in situ, as are its passing loops and crossover. There's even a road sign outside directing people to the 'Station & Car Park'! (Although the GSV image is dated 2009, I do have a more recent photo of it from last spring, just not anywhere easily accessible!)

First one is "Liverpool St James" and they are talking about reopening the station too. The second one is "Spellow" on the Bootle Branch line which includes the station building still fully intact above the cutting.
