Hail All! <D
Escalator?
Taking a minute or two to climb 18 floors? I can power up escalators with a far greater PTW ratio than an HST...But it still takes me a good couple of minutes just to go between platform and surface levels at Westminster LUL!

I've got it! Its a Paternoster lift! :?:
Yup...Mojo's hit the nail on the head! For those not familiar with the design, a Paternoster Lift is a high-capacity form of lift that consists of an endless chain, to which a number of cars are attached. The system moves continuously and people board/alight from it whilst in motion, a bit like using a Travolator. :)

The reason that I mentioned A university in Sheffield - Thinking that at least two of us must've studied there at some point - Is because one of the Uni of Sheffield's buildings is the 20-floor high Arts Tower, built in the 1960's, and having a very well used Paternoster installed and still in use. 8)

The name Paternoster is derived from the first two words of the Lord's Prayer in Latin; Pater Noster (Our Father) and is so named because of the similarities between the cars on a Paternoster chain and the prayer beads on a Catholic Rosary. :)

Farewell... <D

Those Paternoster lifts look (and sound) deadly though. I wouldn't like to use one!

I must admit that I was a little nervous the first time I used one (The staff paternoster at Kaufhof in Hamburg) but since then I havn't had a problem with the things at all. :)

Just to Kill off a common misconception: Though not advisable, travelling either over the top or under the bottom of a Paternoster is not dangerous...Provided that - During such an "over" or "under" trip - Ye remain perfectly still and don't wobble the car at all. 8)

Oh, I would! Look like fun <D
I personally think the best thing about them is what could happen if a chav mouthed off at ye whilst he was riding one. Grabbed leg and a horribly severed torso, anyone?... ;)<D

Personally though...I think that Paternosters would be an excellent thing to have at many LUL stations - Especially at Covent Garden! 8)

There are 5 green apples in a fruitbowl. If someone takes out 4 apples then how many green apples are left in the fruitbowl? Assume that nobody else has taken any apples and that they don't go mouldy, etc.

Assuming the four apples removed were green, then one green apple remains. However, if there were red apples in the bowl in the first instance, we cannot tell how many green apples remain.

Exactly right. All we can tell is that there are between 1 and 5 green apples remaining in the fruitbowl.

Here's an easy one... <D

I have an apple at home. The local Greengrocer has an apple, the Tesco supermarket has several apples, and the garage down the road also has an apple...

...Going on what I have just told you, what would you expect to find in my office?
:D;)

Well, we don't know if the apple in your home is a computer or a fruit, therefore we cannot tell what is in your office. Anyway, your computer may not be in your office.

Well, I was thinking specifically An IBM-compatable PC...As my office is run by a Windows man who absolutely refuses to learn his way around MacOS!

I'll accept LaSeandre's answer though...AFAIK, Windows XP has only ever been released for x86 architectures.

That's correct...There is one angel in Hell! <D

Although to set ye along the right lines, the one angel in Hell is Lucifer. Before his residence inside that rather warm place, he was actually one of the Lords higher standing angels, but was cast into Hell when he refused to bow down to Adam.

IIRC: The tale itself is outlined either somewhere towards the start of the Old Testament, or is summerised in a prologial fashion in the book of Revelations. I don't have a Bible to hand though, so I can't check which of the two it is. :|<D

.oO(Dear Gods! At this rate I'm going to be running Bible study classes...And I'm an Asatrúer, for goodness sake!:roll::lol:)

I'm gonna attempt one here:

Cleopatra and Mark Anthony were dead on the floor. The room was completely empty, apart from a table and a bowl on the floor. The bowl was not broken.

How did they die?

How did they die?

They drowned.

Cleopatra and Mark Anthony are fish.

Geoff was found hanged in mysterious circumstances.

Investigators discovered him hanging from the light fitting in the centre of a large downstairs room. The room was entirely empty of furniture or any other objects and had been secured from the inside with all doors and windows closed and locked. There were no other means of entry and exit. The deceased was hanging with his feet almost a metre off the floor.

Investigators are at a loss to explain how Geoff died. Can you help?

Dammit. They are fish indeed.

O L Leigh! You know all mine!

Am I allowed to answer this one?

Don't know. Do you already know the solution?

Might be nice to let the others ponder over it for a while. Then you can sneak back in and dazzle everyone with your intellect. ;)
