Travellers are a recognised ethnic minority so no wonder people pussyfoot around them.

The last time I tried to get a pair of them to buy a ticket they claimed I was being racist.

- "you're racist. You're picking on us because we're Travellers!"
- "Everybody on the train is travelling Madam, you are the only two travelling without a ticket"

It got me nowhere, when I asked for an address (as I didn't want to delay the train en-route by trying to kick them off) they gave their address as "A halting point in Kent, we don't know where", and the gateline staff at their destination (having been warned they were coming) opened the gates when they saw them as they "didn't want any trouble" (and the BTP ten yards along the platform at that station are notorious for not wanting to know about tickets).

Have the Railway Byelaws been amended since the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 outlawed towing and clamping on private land? There appears to be a conflict between the two laws, which one takes priority? I'm guessing that the Railway Byelaws provide for the "lawful authority" required in the Act.

From what I have learned about Railway Byelaws since joining this forum, how well are the stringencies of any byelaw that cover the matter appertaining to this thread normally enforced?

Thoroughly agree. What is needed to stop this nonsense is a harsh deterent. It isn't difficult, simply a very high per vehicle fine for trespass with accompanying powers to seize the vehicle concerned until said fine is paid. No payment, vehicle auctioned. The high amount would cover policing and vehicle recovery costs. A few cases of that across the land and these vermin will vanish quick enough.

i wouldn't bank on it in this day and age

Why auction? Just destroy, same as no tax/insurance.
better to make a few quid then destroying a vehicle if its new. if its a heap of scrap get rid all right. i'm surprised vehicles aren't sold if in good condition if caught for no tax and so on, but i suppose they probably can't.

The authorities often seem reluctant to take legitimate legal action. Political correctness ?
wouldn't think so. probably more hassle then its worth to them rightly or wrongly
