The thread was locked, so of course there was nothing reported. Doesn't mean there hasn't been problems, and there has.

I never said there were no problems, just nothing serious enough for certain people to bother getting the thread reopened which was pretty remarkable for a fleet now working all 3 diagrams during the height of summer considering their previous issues.

My dad uses this line and I read your comments and he just laughed and suggested you come and try and rely on this line for a week and see if your opinion changes.

Thanks for that offer of a totally objective, fact-based analysis of their reliability but I've been relying on a line operated by a Vivarail fleet for *years* - I'm hardly ignorant of the issues.

Even if its decided to replace them would likely be a year or two for more trains to be brought in if its 197s, which themselves aren't great for the line. The line really needs Metro type stock like the class 398 (though maybe not the lack of a wc).
The 197s struggle a bit in autumn but the rest of the time they are perfectly capable of completing a round trip in the scheduled two hours and 15 minutes.

Your rose tinted answers sound completely ignorant.

Do we really want this thread closed down again? Please no.
Hear hear. It's ok for people to acknowledge the relative improvement over the past few months just as it's fine for others to be frustrated with reliabilty of late. Those views are not mutually exclusive and people are entitled to either or opinion (or both). Keep it civil

I have no desire to get into a war of words, let's just try to keep this thread objective and fact-based

On that note, it looks like 230s are back working all three diagrams today?

I had my first experience of these trains last Thursday. I had a day out with a North Wales Day Ranger. I did Shoton, Bidston, Wrexham Central, Wrexham General. I thought they were a nice train to ride. My previous experience had been on the Marston Vale 230s, now presumably rotting away in storage somewhere.

I have plans to go to the Isle of Wight next year

Number of cancellations today, and not the first time this week. Failed 230 and no others seem to be available.
There has been at least 1 197 covering a diagram on a couple of days last week too. Whats new is the 230s now seem to be failing on days where its not even too hot or too cold or too pollen-y. Today was quite hot, granted, but its been a mild week.

Not good.

I was on 230007 this morning, 6.20 dep from Wrexham.

Water all over one of the tables and one of the side seats was left up, as if someone had been looking/repairing something under it. Considering it had come direct from the depot, its pretty poor not to notice these things, before sending it out.
The conductor ended up correcting the seat in the end, despite the driver walking through the train.

Probably explains why one caught fire today then

The air conditioning units are known for condensation leaking into the saloon unfortunately . Regarding the side seats there are various components underneath them the fitters check every day before and after service, the locks are a bit temperamental and the seat unit itself is spring loaded so pop open from time to time if theyre not properly latched over some lively track. Agreed it should have been closed as soon as noticed though.
Either way. I'm not sure it was supposed to do so.
Obviously not great but cant have been too serious. Presumably deemed to not be a fire as it ran empty to Wrexham then ran empty back to Birkenhead depot. I dont know any further details however!

More cancellations today due to unit failure. First ones of the day I believe.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Failures yesterday and today. Not enough units apparently so services cancelled. Not a good weekend

Another failure at heswall today. Apparently a smell of burning and bus replacement instead. More cancellations to follow

Wrexham borderlines users association reports poor service with cancellations increasing.

"Our analysis of service cancellations since April shows them at an unacceptable level and the trend is getting worse. ....

Of the trains that run, one in five or more are regularly running late ( based on TfW's on-time to 3 metric) This year's leaf-fall season is imminent, and likely to worsen the situation for passengers. Publicly available data shows that performance on the Wrexham-Bidston line continues to be significantly inferior to comparable TfW routes in South East Wales as well as that of the nearby Merseyrail network.

The WBRUA's Chairman has, on 24 September, written to James Price, CEO of TfW asking that TfW visibly prioritise and resolve the ongoing performance issues with its Wrexham-Bidston service and actively publicise what it is doing. As with the early morning service the WBRUA fought for, we will continue to lobby for a better service that the line and its users expect and deserve."

To be fair, i don't think the Wrexham Bidston user group are particularly helping in anyway. Im sure TfW know theyre having issues and will be coming up with solutions of their own accord - afterall, delays and cancellations cost them momey. The WBRUA come across as a bunch of busy bodies with too much time on their hands from my personal view point.

A lot of unreliability has been down to 230s lately yes - but also various bridge strikes, infrastructure issues, welfare concerns etc too.

All they have done is highlight facts. Every day users are suffering.

The comparison with routes in the south east suggests they think the line is at best neglected and at worst actively de-prioritised. The increased frequency suggests to me that TfW are interested in improving things on the route, however they’ve got themselves stuck with very unreliable trains and no easy way out of that. So until new rolling stock comes along which will presumably be a few years at a minimum (777s?), I can’t see things changing too much. There will probably be better periods but there will continue to be bad ones too.

Would a return to an hourly frequency help? Would that require 2 units rather than 3? Politically it may be impossible and if the problem is seemingly healthy (on the depot) 230s failing once they’re out in service then it might not help at all.

This week has seen a return to 2 230 diagrams anyway with a 197 booked on the other.
197s are in a period of awful availability too so its robbing Peter to pay Paul but its something happening for the Bidston route.

Not sure if it is TFW staff or Stadler staff service the 230s at Birkenhead? But to have just 2 out of 5:units serviceable is not ideal, as the recent upgrades seemed to show improvements.
At one point looks like GWR took on some Vivarail staff to provide support and spares if GWR started to roll out 230s on branchlines. TFW and SWR would have benefited. But looks like GWR have now decided to keep the Networker trains on branchlines till they get new trains.

However the SWR Island line seems to be doing well with the Vivarail ex LU trains, but are not hybrid power and probably easier to maintain, and the staff have a long tradition of ex LU trains.

A return to hourly with two units would be a disaster. 120 minutes is not enough to do a round trip.

Can't help but agree. I think more 197s will become a bit of a sticking plaster, but as you say these are a stretched resource as it is

Are the cancellation % figures really any worse than those in South East Wales?
