Even for an industry as profligate as the railway, you'd want to think that almost brand new generating units should be removed before the bodyshells go through the shredder.

Indeed, though the similar discussion on the thread about GWR 769s concluded that there was no suitable re-use available for this particular equipment. GWR's have had even less use than TfW's of course :(.

Well I saw something a little unexpected out of a train window today.

When I first saw it in the distance I was a bit confused because I was fairly sure there isn't normally a railway line down there.
I've only seen pictures of this sort of thing before.

It's the A48 Western Avenue at the junction with Waungron Road. Waungron Park station is slightly to the left of the photo.

Is this part of 769007, or has another unit moved by road?

How many 231s will need to be in service before all the 769s can be withdrawn?

They have 11 in total yes so im guessing 9 diagrams on Rhymney/Bargoed to Penarth and 2 spare?

They may still get rid of the 769s before all the 231s are in service and just use Sprinters as they do now on some diagrams.

That depends what condition its running gear is in. If it's not fit to run - for instance, if parts have been removed to keep other sets in traffic - then it could be cheaper and/or quicker to move it by road than to carry out the work and possibly have to hire in a loco to tow it as well.

Also don't forget that nearly all the TfW 769s arrived by road and were only tripped across the brickyard after shunting together, by a light loco from Leicester.

Having spent the last couple of days in Cardiff bashing the 769s and to a lesser extent the 231s, I have noticed 769445 appears to be situated out the way at Canton and the only one I never had for haulage under it's diesel guise. Really wish they could save the seating as it's miles better than the new stuff.

Run them until they fail and then immediately withdraw them?
