Also I will profess not be knowledgeable of this area but what is the benefit from all this work other than providing fast lines to separate the stopping service can't see it provides that much benefit when it goes back to 2 track at Dewsbury. I see the fast lines will be 100mph where possible but given the geometry of the rest of the route it will give 1-2mins for 1.5B. Would have been better to have kept the works inside the existing railway boundaries and saved two to three hundred million on the heavy civil works.

Nit everything goes to Dewsbury.

You still have the trains that don‘t go through Dewsbury. Grand Central and Hudds - Wakefield services. Plus most Huddersfield and Calder Valley freight goes to/from Wakefield.

You could add in Sheffield as well if the Horbury Curve ever reopens. An hourly Huddersfield to Sheffield via Horbury most likely wouldn’t be possible if the grade separation at Ravensthorpe hadn’t have happened, although it may be made impossible by the lack of east facing bay platforms at the remodelled Huddersfield.

I wonder if a service to Sheffield from either Bradford or the Hebden Bridge direction might be more useful than a Huddersfield one anyway (it's a long way round to connect with Darton), but that's going well down the line of speculation.

This cab video shows Piccadilly to Stalybridge via Guide Bridge. The two overbridges that are about to be done are at about 10:00 and 10:25.

The train in the video leaves the Hadfield wires at about 7:35. Between then and about 9:00 there are about 7 surviving portals from the DC wiring. It will be interesting to see how many if any of these are re-used. A greater number must have been removed already.

If you look in this stalybridge to stockport video around 3:25, you can see on the right hand side where the piling went up to.

Yea insaw them on the video too. Someone commented way back on here that the structural integrity of the old ones is unknown and they can't re-use them in the current scheme. Re-using them in 1981 it wasn't a problem apparently.

When they reused them in 1981 tho all they did was change the insulation pots. For a long time the original contact wire still remained in place and may still be there in some places

I counted 7 piles so far before the first redundant portal, all on the Right hand (i.e. Dn Hudds) side. There's another 1 about 3:50 on the Up Hudds, then a sizeable gap before a 2nd Up Hudds pile at 4:08 (by some Location Cabinets).
After that, there's 4 pairs (1st at 4:12) of piles; 4 on the Up, 4 on the Dn until 4:23.
There's then a pile next to the Down Main at Guide Bridge West Jn for a TTC/portal (at 4:29), and another pile on the Up Main further west (4:31) before Guide Bridge station.

19 total.

In 1981 they had been continuously used, inspected and maintained, and their condition would have been known and fairly good. They are now more than twice the age they were then, and those that haven't remained in use will have been gently rusting away, with an inspection/maintenance regime that only aimed to make sure they didn't fall down and cause a hazard. Their ability to support any sort of extra load has got to be highly questionable.

Although the catenary their originally supported was heavier, modern OLE is tensioned so imposes different longitudinal and lateral forces that these structures would never have been designed to handle.

On the topic of photos, searching ‘Transpennine Route upgrade’ on Google images does yield several results, most notably of some of the structures at Miles Platting and at various locations covered by E1.

Here's our Graham with a quick reminder.

E1 – North of Church Fenton to York - where there will be line speed improvements and electrification

Mmm, going by the guys stood next to it I'd guess in that photo the bridge deck's about 18ft above the track, and probably has to come down a bit still.

From LinkedIn, another video of the Southampton Street bridge works, Ashton-u-Lyne:

Granville Street being done this weekend.

========================================

I intended the following to be a new post but the accursed automerge has merged it:

As far as I know the two bridges over the line between Guide Bridge and Stalybridge will by now have been done.

It has been claimed that all the overbridges between Victoria and Stalybridge have been done except Stamford Street East (A635, some distance east of Ashton station).

So I think the main questions relating to Manchester-Stalybridge now are:

1. Is the track layout at Stalybridge, remodelled in 2012, going to be re-remodelled or not?

2. What works are needed at Stamford Street East bridge?

3. What works are required at the tunnel known to the railway as Katherine Street Tunnel (under the A670)?

4. When will these be done?

I received a letter to "Railway Neighbour" from Networkrail. It's the second one I have seen and concerns piling work between Guide Bridge and Stalybridge on two weekends. Nothing new there until one looks at the accompanying map which shows , as expected, work between Ashton Junction (Guide Bridge West?) and Wharf St in Ashton, the site of Dukinfield Central Station. The interesting bit is the work site also extends from Guide Bridge in the direction of Hyde Junction almost as far as Guide Bridge East. It looks like they may be replacing the existing (in use) overheads in that area?

There's a new tweet saying a low bridge between Manchester and Stalybridge is being replaced this weekend. I assume this means Granville Street and that it didn't happen last weekend as planned.

Two quick questions:

1. Has this replacement of a headspan with a TTC near to the Askham Bar P&R been done as part of TRU?

2. Is there a roughly 50mph TSR on the Up Leeds at Ulleskelf? I did the route today to film a progress update and I remember just a few hundred yards south of Ulleskelf there was a ‘clickity-clack’ between pieces of track, like one bit was new and the other old.

Re 1. - This looks to be a "yes"; the structure was failing as its foundations had been undermined by waskally wabbits, so the opportunity was taken to replace it while the project was going on.
As for 2. - There might well be.

Piles have appeared between Stalybridge and Guide Bridge, but at the Stalybridge end of the line. Around the replaced bridges, about 5 on the Up and 7 on the Down. Some on the Up haven't been fully pushed into the ground and are a couple of metres out of the ground.

Also spotted two between some of the viaducts, and one new one just before the sidings start on the Up side.
