From Clitheroe, possibly? If I remember correctly there was a time when Burnley ran the local (and beyond) Clitheroe services, long before the Ribble Country services.
It might also have been Blackburn, there are a few pictures online of buses that did it in the Spot On livery but I remember seeing at least one Starship Versa. I know Blackburn ran some Clitheroe services in their early days.

Yes, the Summer Season for the 75 starts tomorrow which includes the service transferring from Lonsdale Buses to Transdev and the extension from Malham to Settle.

Sunday will see the return of the 820/821, with the 820 being extended past Pateley Bridge to Fountains Abbey & Ripon.
Sadly (as of today) there's no mention of the 821 at Keighley bus station. Same with the 866 which started a couple of weeks ago.

Tomorrow is the first day of the service to Settle if I remember correctly.

On that note, didn't they run something to Settle from the Lancashire end at one point, route number 13?
There were certainly a couple of years when they ran a summer Sunday Dalesbus service from Burnley and Clitheroe to Settle, I think one year it continued up to Hawes, and the other year it bounced backwards and forwards between Clitheroe and Settle a few times before returning home. I remember riding that on a Starship Dart.
I'm not aware that Transdev ever ran a regular service to Settle though ... I'm pretty sure when they ran the Hodder Valley service it was only a circular route between Clitheroe and Slaidburn. There was a through service run by Tyrer before that, and obviously we're back to that now.

I just had a look and found an old DalesBus timetable booklet from 2013 which included the 13 between Clitheroe and Settle. It appears that there were three return trips with the first and last ones operating through to Burnley.

Yes, that sounds like the one that I rode on. Surprised me that it didn't have an 8xx number like all the other Dalesbus routes.

Another interesting day on Coastliner, Bank Holiday weekend always brings its surprises. The 09:00 from Leeds to Whitby was completely full by the time it reached York Stonebow, so the driver had to turn down groups of people. This continued all the way to Malton with the bus being full and standing with luggage filling the aisle.

Once in Malton, the bus had some issue setting off from Railway Street and someone from Transdev ran up the road from Malton Bus Station to get the bus moving into the bus station. Around 20 people were waiting at the bus station, all but 4 would be turned down. After a 10 minute wait in Malton, it was decided that another bus would be put on to follow behind so everyone could travel. The 2 buses left Malton with a delay of 30 minutes.

Kudos to Transdev for putting on the second bus from Malton to avoid leaving people behind, ideally it would've started in York but at least some people in Malton & Pickering were still able to get to the coast despite this.

The duplicate however only tracked as far as Flyindgales. Hope that was just a tracking error as the ex Leeds advoided Goathland.

I alighted at Hole Of Horcum so I don't know for sure but I think that people on the duplicate were transferred onto the ex-Leeds in the lay-by next to the A169 turnoff for Goathland. The duplicate may have gone into Goathland with anyone who was onboard either bus who wished to alight there. It then ran empty back to Malton.

Are there any plans to replace the Coastliner fleet?
I don't think so. The Gemini 3s are coming up to 10 years old now and the interiors are starting to feel worn. If not a replacement, I would like to see a refurbishment with the seats being reupholstered and USB-C chargers added.

What would the Gemini 3s be replaced with anyway? Electric buses would require some sort of charging installed at Malton Bus Station to keep them topped up on the long runs to/from the coast.

Because of the nature of the route, there was a time when Transdev would replace buses at Coastline every 3 to 4 years, with the older buses moved on to other parts of the Transdev empire, that stopped with Covid

Does anyone know if a £3 single is valid for a connection on Coastlier where a through journey isn't available? I'm specifically wanting to travel from York to Pickering on a Sunday where most journeys require a change of bus in Malton. It would seem a but harsh to have to buy two singles! Thanks in advance.

It's a long time since I've seen connecting fares advertised, and that was when a single to the coast wasn't much cheaper than a day ticket.

Few of the "connections" are will-timed, now, whereas they used to be mostly very good.

I don't know for sure they're not available, but if they're not and you need to connect both ways, a Scenic Explorer is £10.

There’s so much to see and do with a Scenic Explorer ticket!
Check out the links to the ‘Fantastic Five’ jewels in the crown routes that provide amazing scenery and scintillating destinations. On these pages, you can plan your journey, enjoy an insight into the journey as well as inspiration for a number of places to visit as well as some fab walks.

The Scenic Explorer ticket offers great value and flexibility:

  • 1-day unlimited travel – just £10 for one person or £19 for up to 5 people
  • 3-day unlimited travel – £20 for one person or £38 for up to 5 people

They always have offered through fares and according to a friend who knows they still do.

If its a direct connection, yes. Such as transferring on a Sunday from the 14:40 ex Thornton-le-Dale 840 to Malton onto the 15:22 843 towards York & Leeds. If you ask the driver on the first bus, they'll tell you to change in Malton and show your ticket to the next driver.

I definitely agree that they need a refurbishment, but with the continuing reliability issues, I’m surprised a new fleet hasn’t been openly discussed. (Although what would actually replace the G3s is a whole other can of worms)

I believe that E400 MMCs were quite unpopular during their time in Malton which might limit a replacement for the Gemini 3s.
For all we know, Transdev could be having discussions with manufacturers for a replacement and considering where to transfer the Gemini 3s within Transdev (I'd like to see the X41 into Manchester get some new buses) and we're just not aware.
Either way, nearly 10 years of intensive service is certainly taking its toll.

How viable is the tri-axle B8 EvoSeti? A good capacity boost for the summer season and a clear step up from the B5. One would imagine the main limiting factor would be route clearance with the longer body

You might have some issues turning around by Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland, which is tricky enough in a Gemini 2 and/or 3 (some Gemini 2s are still used on Coastliner). I don't know if it will cause issues with the stands at Malton Bus Station or with storing the buses overnight in Malton.

Plus Malton depot is not that big either is it so would tri-axel buses fit, i see Coastliner has 15 Gemini 3s allocated to Malton, but don't some buses have to park up outside overnight?

A couple of updates from Paul Turner:
York & Country E200 MMC 751 has been repainted into the revised York & Country livery with 753 away to receive the same treatment.
Blackburn B7RLE 1700 has been withdrawn following MOT expiry and Blackburn B7RLE 1869 has been withdrawn following accident damage.
Keighley B7RLE 1730 is away for conversion into a training vehicle to allow the withdrawal of the last B10BLEs.

Does anyone know if B7RLE 1771 in York is also away for repaint or if its having some sort of issue as it hasn't tracked since March?

Malton isn't really a depot, it's more of an outstation with buses moving through Rawcliffe on a regular basis for maintenance. There's always a handful of buses parked up outside, it usually depends on where buses finish the day and where they'll start the next day.

It’s that really true? B5s replaced 8/9 year old B9s didn’t they? The only short lived buses were the low floor single deckers replaced with doubles when the national concession scheme came in

No it doesn’t. There are about eight buses overnighting at Malton from York’s allocation.

Coastliner doesn't even have 15 Gemini 3s anyway. There are 13 Gemini 3s (all Coastliner branded) & 8 Gemini 2s (mixture of Transdev Go, Citysightseeing & Coastliner branded) for the York fleet in total. Some are for Coastliner and some are for the Easingwold services including the respective school/college diagrams.

eCitaro 1007 appeared to have a problem parked in the loading bay for the Harrogate Convention Centre just after noon with the driver with a hi viz on standing at the rear on their mobile. As it recommenced its route 2 working after a few minutes and remainded in service for its full duties presumably it was a case of switch it off and switch it back on again

Citaro 1514 has returned from Idle to Starbeck.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

B7RLE 1718 from Keighley and B7RLE 1837 are on loan to Coastliner due to B5s out of action. Also reported that E200 MMC 753 is back at Rawcliffe in the revised York & Country livery, now just awaiting vinyls.

I wonder if the new Wright Streetdeck Ultraliner powered by the Cummins 6.7 litre would be a good fit for the Coastliner service.
