I don't think they'll be far off service now.

we're waving goodbye to our Volvo B10s

Whether Streetlites could be said to be an improvement I'm not sure!

Still no Streetlites in service. Anyone know what the hold up is?

The fleet looks pretty stretched without them - per bustimes.org, apart from the Streetlites and a B10, only one Blackburn bus didn't go out today. Three B10s are still running.

There have been several vehicles withdrawn this year without replacement until the Streetlites are ready, and it looks like a few of the Rosso Versas are off the road fairly long term.

Last I heard, as of a week or so ago, they were just receiving a last bit of mechanical TLC. I'm guessing that once they're ready they'll replace the B10s as and when they go in for their regular maintenance.

Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place to post but I have an interview with Transdev coming up soon so wanted to see what others thought. The position is trainee PCV driver for Team Pennine.

Would anyone recommend it as a good place to work? I’ve also got some interviews with First Bus coming up but I’ve heard they don’t have a good reputation at all. So I’d prefer to work for a different company if possible but haven’t found out much about Transdev.

The job is for Team Pennine in Huddersfield but I’ve also said I’m interested in jobs in Keighley and Halifax.

Thanks

I’m not a fan of the latest printed timetables that have appeared recently

They’ve stopped containing full timetables and instead are just lists of departures from principal locations

Someone has probably decided that customers can’t read proper timetables, which is probably true, but it’s a negative step for those of us who can read a timetable

Totally agree, and if you are an intermediate stop, then you deserve nothing. Very poor.

You can get hold of a proper timetable from the website as a pdf under the timetables section, Another problem is that they have changed the names of some stops. For example Garnet Lane in Tadcaster is shown in the app as Marlborough Drive, but in the timetable and on the displays in the bus it retains its older name. I suspect this affects other stops too, as locally stops immediately opposite each other have diffent names depending on the direction. That's daft.
You may also spot that a lot of stops don't have a timetable displayed so in some out of the way place, such as the Fox and Rabbit, turning up at the stop you have no idea of when the buses run.
Anyway these are minor problems compared with the fact that if you turn for a bus from Leeds in the late afternoon there is a good chance you bus will be cancelled and you might wait, usually standing due to the limited number of seats, for more than an hour for another one. The commuting option from Leeds has been completely destroyed by Transdev being incapable of running a proper bus service and by removing stops on early buses in the centre of Leeds and later stops in the rush hour at New Briggate. Transdev should be sacked from running this route and a proper, reliable bus service established between Leeds and York. What to do with the rest I don't know.

They included more than now. These typically have times from the start of the route and perhaps one intermediate point.
I presumed they might have been done like this to save paper

The 60 for example tells you departures from Keighley, Leeds and in both directions from Shipley

The 36 has Leeds, Ripon and both ways from Harrogate

Anywhere else you have to guess

Coastliner has 10 panels which could probably have fitted in a full timetable

The service is worked commercially (or at least most of it) so they cannot be "sacked". Nothing to stop another operator from registering as service. First tried such a service and gave in

Are there still regular service cancellations that aren't due to traffic or breakdowns now? I've noticed they've stopped pushing the recruitment ads and the daily service cancellations due to a lack of drivers doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Cancelling high frequency services to avoid bunching in traffic is a sensible thing to do and can't really be avoided. Nor can breakdowns, though with the electric fleet incoming to Harrogate they'll likely be rare.

Still issues on the X98/99… I’m just glad I can drive again.

Any news on a firm date for the intro of the electric double deckers for the 36?

I wonder if Transdev will drop the X98/99 at some point? It seems have been nothing but a struggle since they took it on.

Hopefully it will go to someone else under franchising and will be speeded up, reliable, and be a proper X service again. I have used the X6 between Bradford and Leeds a few times recently and the difference is stark. They run on time, reliably, are proper limited stop services, the drivers drive quickly, and don't wait at bus stops to lose time. Each journey took 31 minutes. Each journey ran to the same route.

By comparison, the X99 is not limited stop, was slow, late and the route varies seemingly day by day or by the time of day. It's total guesswork now - will it be Roseville Road and Regent Street? Will it be RR and Byron Street? Will it be Roundhay Road and North Street?

The bus will wait at stops between Collingham and Oakwood Clock to lose time and then hit traffic coming into Leeds and arrive late? Whoever designed the timetable knew nothing about the route.

Yesterday on the journey from Leeds to Wetherby, the driver designed his own route as a result of an accident which had delayed the incoming service. His route was brilliant, and so fast that he almost caught up all the lost time, in spite of leaving Leeds 15 minutes late. He should design the route and timetable. The bus was a 62 plate Gemini, so for once it had some power and acceleration, and he used it to good effect.

It is 11 miles on the X6 and it takes 31 minutes off-peak. It is 15 miles on the X99 and it takes 55 minutes as a minimum.

You're lucky the Headrow was clear. Last time I caught it, we spent 30 minutes on the Headrow.

I mean presumably First dropped it because it was losing money, so that wasn't a strong base to start with.

IMO the timetable is too tight to operate reliably - the 6 minutes off peak turnaround in Leeds isn't enough, and the X98 basically runs a continuous loop with no proper stop in Wetherby. (Yes it has 4 minutes in each direction at the bus station, but that will quickly be used up if there are many passengers getting on and off)

Adding an extra bus to the circuit is probably out of the question because of the financial situation. If they could cut some stops that would speed up the journey and improve reliability - but even if they cut every stop between Oakwood Clock and Leeds City Centre, what would that save, 2 minutes maybe? Maybe over the day that adds up to something more significant for reliability, but then it comes back to the financial side again - is the service viable without those stops?

With franchising happening in the next few years there's little incentive for Transdev to make much effort to improve the service, and if it's not making money right now I wouldn't be surprised to see it dropped soon.

Gemini 2421 (the Pride liveried one) was accident damaged in Leeds last Friday working for Coastliner which has resulted in Starbeck losing to Coastliner 2428 (the 1400 colleagues one). Meanwhile the other Gemini transferred to Starbeck to replace an Enviro 400 2427 hasn't seemingly worked since 19 June when it was taken off the 1405 Leeds- Ripon 36 at Harrogate. Even then the X98/X99 had three double deckers on it today and only one B7RLE (if the tracking is correct) . Its not sufficient time in the peaks in particular that is the issue - Station A to Victoria D taking far longer than booked in the evening peak forming a poor start to a Wetherby bound service

The fact that 3 miles of the X6 route is on a 60mph grade-separated dual-carriageway might have something to do with it, yesno? Good luck finding a fast road between Leeds and Wetherby. For most of its length, the X98/X99 is the only service, so if you want to make it limited stop then you'll need to provide an alternative stopping service to shadow the route. The X98/X99 takes just as long now as it did when First were running it – you know, First who run the X6 that you rate so highly. Maybe, just maybe, the fact that this route is slower is nothing to do with the current operator...

The X98/99 has multiple areas of 50mph, the only difference is that there a stops along the entire section and no free running.
What used to happen is both services were limited stop to/from Oakwood clock and would only set down in either direction. This seemed to work well.

With the roadworks at the Aldi at the end of Roseville Road, it does make me wonder why the buses don’t use Roundhay Road and North Street, particularly at busy times.

The X98 does 59mins for the full route, X99 50.

They could divert some down Easterly Rd. Far quicker than via Oakwood. Might gain some recovery time. New route number needed.

The X99 runs the full route off peak so can be timed faster but I do not see where it does it in 50 mins

Could there be any possibility of integrating the X98/X99 into the existing 7 service at some point, to either avoid the franchising (having a service coming into Leeds rather than operating out of Leeds - similar to how the X41/X43 have got around franchising in Manchester) or try and make the service more justifiable?

The X98/X99 remains in the area proposed for franchising however (West Yorkshire), the X41/X43 leaves Greater Manchester (franchising area) and terminates in Lancashire.

I'm not sure why Transdev would be remotely interested in doing that if the service is currently marginal/ loss making.

I was only wondering, I don't actually know the area too well so wasn't sure of the possibility. You're right though, I'm surprised Transdev haven't offloaded it yet. I know Connexions were after running it after First gave it up, but the then Transdev CEO wasn't so keen on that happening...
