Tram-Train...any future ?

Here's another tram-train proposal that was mooted a couple of years ago, but has now gone quiet: Worcester Tram-trains

Apart from Rotherham-Sheffield all tram-train schemes are on hold until the success of Rotherham-Sheffield is analysed. People may be pushing for other schemes in the media but they aren't going to happen until after Rotherham-Sheffield.

In the posting from WatcherZero with regard to the new Rotherham project, where a link to a column in the Railway Gazette was given, reference is made to a Network Rail frieight line being electrified at 750V dc, as a link with the Sheffield Supertram network.

Which Network Rail freight line is being referred to in this column?

It is the line at the back of Sheffield Arena, I would think the link will be at Meadowhall south or maybe at Nunnery Square.

The link would be just before meadowhall south as the lines start to diverge.
Next to the link to tinsley yard.

I still don't understand what they are planning and how they are going to fit it into existing Supertram services (a twenty minute service has been mentioned, but there's a ten minute Yellow tram along the Lower Don Valley plus a half hourly Purple tram - you'd have to run the three "Tram Train" services at irregular intervals to squeeze them in between the existing ones, unless there's a recast on the cards?).

The whole thing is going to be a mess (are Northern tickets valid, or Supertram ones, or both?)

There was to be a recast anyway as they were ordering 4 extra trams to bolster services. As they are two different projects we dont really know what to expect.

Either
1. They order 4 tram trains for the pilot and say these are the extra 4 for strengthening too.
2. They combine the order for cost savings so they order 8 trams of the same type, though Sheffield isnt guarenteed to keep 4 after the trial as Dft has reserved the right to redeploy them elsewhere after the trial period.
3. They order 8 trams of two different classes.

With the uncertainty expressed in (2) above, it would be a better thing to go for option (3), then this gives a chance to compare two different unit performances. You do state that DfT have reserved the right to deploy some units elsewhere.
