I haven't heard anything from them myself, although saying that they probably had hundreds of applications to look through :) and it is the christmas period and HR places only usually work monday - friday 9 - 5! (so probably off if they were anything like my last job! - wasn't railway related)

The initial sifting was on 22 December, when all 219 applications were looked at. About half passed this. Then the test was scored. The highest scores were then invited for assessments.

These were/are held on 5,6,7,10 & 11 January.

I guess that means I wasn't successful at the application stage (since i haven't heard anything - i.e. no letters)

I am already a depot driver on NXEA and applied for the advertised trainee driver role on West Anglia - I have not heard anything just normal rumours but if rumours are correct there are no positions at Bishops Stortford or Cambridge anyway just Chingford.
If you applied for role at Ilford beware that you could be waiting a long time before you get mailine drivers job.

The rumours are incorrect then! Due to the new services that the DfT have agreed, more drivers are needed at each depot on West Anglia.
The trouble is, if we take depot drivers from South East, then that leaves a shortfall there and a recruitment problem for them.

Don't forget that if you are a depot driver, then you would only need to come to an interview with managers, not all the other psycometric testing as you will have already of done this.

Watch this space as there were several applications from depot drivers - Bishops Stortford is the depot that will take most drivers.

I'm not so sure, 31A.

I have been reliably informed that BIS is currently over-complement. In any case the new services are not likely to require BIS drivers. In particular, the proposed 2tph ELY-SSD would be all CAM drivers due to the required route knowledge.

Is it true that a qualified driver would have to start as a depot driver?

how do they inform you if you passed or failed the structured interview? do they tell you on the day if you have passed? or do they write a letter informing you that you pass or failed?

regards,

Back in my day as a DM, interview results would normally be sent out by letter. It would normally be a few weeks after as well. The most recent trainee driver posts, to my understanding will be done in a least 2 batches. So results i reckon will be sent out mid-late Feb.

But things might of changed since my day, any of the current NXEA DM's know?

On the GE side you would have to start as a depot driver and wait for a main line position wether already qualified or not.

I dont think so. I know some right lazy gits who would happily not venture out on the mainline if they got the same rate of pay :D

They would start on the depot drivers rate of pay.
It is the fairest way of doing it as it wouldn't be right that a depot driver who has been in the grade for a few years waiting to get a mainline job is leap frogged in the promotion by an external applicant.

Are you certain about that? I've never heard of such a policy at any other company, and it would make no commercial sense whatsoever. It's far cheaper to recruit qualified drivers if you can, and it is obvious that you need to get them productive as quickly as poss. In these times of recruitment based on "suitability", and the need to demonstrate transparency at every stage of the process, I find all these posts about shed drivers "waiting there turn" somewhat mystifying. It all sounds like a throwback to a bygone era, and not one that would stand up at an employment tribunal.

It would most certainly deter qualified drivers from applying!

More sifting still to be done, followed by more assessments, so i hear?

I had a structured interview yesterday, and was told I would hear in a few days. I hate waiting......... I hope that this was the normal way of letting you know and not just a polite way of refusing you.

The new services WILL require Bishops Stortford drivers and there has never been a proposal for 2 trains per hour Ely - Stansted. It has always been one train for NXEA, however, this is unlikely to go ahead in the form that it has been proposed. DfT are not happy with it.

This year requires 4 drivers for Cambridge, 4 for Stortford and 6 for Chingford.

It may be hard to phathom but there are agreed arrangements with unions regarding promotions and transfers. It may be far easier to recruit qualified drivers straight into mainline positions on the GE/Metro but the system has to be fair which means waiting your turn. I can't speak for any other company but I belive this was the case even before NXEA with First.

If a qualified driver wished to avoid the depot driver route they could apply for a mainline driver position on West Anglia and once a years productivity is worked put in for a transfer to a GE/Metro depot and transfer to a mainline position. However they would still go to the bottom of the waiting list so this process could take many years to accomplish. GE/Metro Depots are popular so have long waiting lists, just shows theres no quick and easy way onto the GE or Metro, best to just stick with West Anglia like I did :D

As someone else has already said this way of promotion was created by First before NX took over.
It also works like this at Norwich under the former operator Anglia.
Depot driver are 90% up to speed with the rules applicable to main line driving and when made up only have to have a few months on rules course and then do practical handlimg and route learning.
I not quite sure how someone who doesn't work for a company could take it to an employment tribunal when it is a process agreed by the management and unions concerned.

The 4 guys who I interviewed on 18th Jan at Stratford 'should' all be offered positions.

I had my structured interview on the 17th, and was told If I passed, I would most likely be interviewed for the course thats due to start in May.
