Well done to all those who have passed stage 1. Are the 5 main questions on this forum? I got my assessment stage 2 Tuesday but I don't mention to the women at the desk about not being able to make certain dates.

I believe the questions are:

1. Describe a time where you've had to follow rules & procedures.

2. Describe a time where you've been involved in an emergency situation.

3. Describe a time you've been on a training course for over 2 weeks or your greatest achievement.

4. Describe a time where you've had to work for long periods of time alone.

5. Describe a time you've had to solve a difficult problem.

However I could be wrong

Cheers Jambo, there's no mention of salary in the advert, other than saying it's 'competetive'. Would it be on a par with the DBS driver/ operator jobs ? What's the RST qualification ?

Could not have put it better myself. I thought the following thead might be of interest, http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=78154, amongst other things it contains a breakdown of sub-questions relating to the fourth question about lone working. I hope Beveridges does not mind my mention of his material.

I was wondering if there were any further instances of similar breakdowns to the other four questions. I have been looking in the thread, Becoming a Train Driver, but I have not got very far yet. There are over forty pages.

Believe HH threw there own questions in there, I wouldn't take all those questions posted as gospel. If your from a railway background it somewhat comes as easier and you shouldn't really have any major problems if you answer the questions in the way there want to hear, in other words your not an absolute idiot who likes taking chances and cuts corners in life!

I work on a heritage railway. Not quite the same line speeds as on the main line, nor the same hours of work, but the principles are the same, particularly certain rules and procedures such as effective railway communication.

I decided to call HH yesterday and was told I passed !!!

Just have to wait for the letter for stage 2.

Glad to hear good news on here once more. Despite being over 40 this is quite a unique situation for me.

When I did my CBI, I was asked not to answer with reference to my own heritage railway footplate experience. The interviewer suggested that my "real world" work experience, would actually give me stronger answers.

Interesting comment is that although I am not quite sure if I agree in totality. There is just as much of a need for safety with heritage railways, in one regard more so due to the predominant use of slam door stock.

I would be the first to admit that I have not been exposed to any emergency situations on a heritage line unlike some of the more experienced crossing keepers, for example the time when an ambulance broke down on the crossing.

As this is my second strike, I will certainly not ignore your advice. I have an example for rules and procedures which involved my work as a cellar man. I would have to clean the beer lines on a weekly basis using chemicals. Basically, there would have to be no trace of chemicals in the line after the clean. I can testify to this following a mistake made by my assistant, when he dashed off to the loo just after starting work, despite giving me a personal assurance that one particular line was clean.

I don't think it's for us. I think like most lazy HR/Recruitment departments, they've decided to not bother writing a separate external letter, so the letter we got is what they'd send internal applicants.

Maybe it's just me, but I've yet to find a thorough and professional HR department anywhere I've worked. And I've worked in one so I know first hand how awful they are.

It bugs me they didn't even have the courtesy to sign my letter. Not even 'PP' it.

But then i've always been a bit pedantic.

Not sure if its relevant but a couple of friends from my company (also guards ) have their reaction tests on the week commencing Sunday 15th septemeber for the trainee jobs with londonmidland. Are freightliner sending us in dribs and drabs or did everyone make it through stage one lol?

Also can anyone confirm what will be happening that day. Mine just says the next stage is in Watford 08.45 am It doesn't specify that it is reaction and interview it just says next stage? I know it will be reactions cause of location and I will be prepared for more if necessary.

Anyone else's nerves shot to pieces? It's all I can think about right now ha ha.

My nerves were all over the place when I started the GB test last week ! Settled down during the mechanical though, probably because I thought I'd blown the GBT dots…

From what I can gather, should you fail the reactions test then you are told instantly that its time to go home and you won't even sit the interview.

Anybody who's done/doing stage 2 this week, do you know when you're next up for the DM interview, or whatever other hoops you have to jump through ?

Does seem like a lot of folk have made it through to stage 2 (although i doubt it all 240(approx) who sat stage 1)

Again, to those who've already done stage 2. How long does it take altogether ?

Excellent cheers. That means ill definitely practice both and cross my fingers.

Also choochoochoo I guess people who are on here who have passed may have benefited from the wealth of knowledge in this forum. It's definitely worth reading through a few different threads for helpful tips.
