I have been looking for a trainee conductor job for a while and have been looking on merseyrail, first rail, northern rail ad virgin rail but have had no luck so far. I was just wondering how often do these jobs come up and are there any qualifications you need. I am currently working as a pcso for merseyside police and have also worked in sefton council asb unit for the past four years, so hopefully my job experience should help me. I would be grateful for any info/ advice any one could give me.

Merseyrail recruited last time for conductors in summer with deadlines around end of August. They don't do it often though.
Why do you want to leave the police? I read that Merseyside Police is one of the few forces where they will be recruiting for Police Constables within the next month or two.
Have you considered looking at joining/transferring to the British Transport Police?
You'd surely get a lot more railway knowledge with the BTP.
They recently came to my university persuading us to apply to be Special Constables and it seemed pretty good.
I assume your currently salary range is £20,000-£25,000, with pension, it could be the case that you end up taking a pay cut.
From what I've read, you won't get in with Virgin, they seem to do everything internally, (or they cherry pick without advertising).

TPE are shortly opening a new depot in Liverpool, and, as far as I know, will be recruiting for both drivers and conductors to be based there.
We are having a pay cut in April. Also to be a full constable new recruits start on a lot lower than pcso are on. Also I think the pcso role will be going in a few years as it looks like they are trying to phase it out. Thanks for all the info everyone

Virgin conductor salaries are around £35k thats why they get to pick and choose
I've applied for two vacancies at virgin in the last two years, got to the last 15 on both occasions and ive never heard of it being 35K. more like 22K and they advertise for them all the time on their website. On board CSA its called. Ive also seen train manager vacancies come up and that's about 26K

Virgin only tend to advertise the on board CSA jobs externally. Every now and then a Train Manager job is advertised externally and these are usually 35k. Not sure where you have got your figures from.
The "full trained" competent salary of a train manager with Virgin is circa £37k.
Drivers are all filled up, I'd imagine the Conductor links are pretty full with transfers and alike.
Fair enough, I got my figures from one of the job vacancies on their website about 6 months ago. Must of been a starting salary or something else. My apologies.

Yes Virgin Train Managers (Aka Guards) are on £37k now. Yes thats more than Northern Depot Drivers and Northern PQA Mainline Drivers! Who knows what it is with comission added? Virgin wages are definitely not in line with the rest of the industry. As I said before, they can pick and choose for this reason alone.

W230 is spot on I am currently doing CRASBO day in day out an the paper work is a joke also the way we get treated isn't great by the police themselves i just want a new challenge with prospects I'm only still young at 25 and am currently going through buying my first house with my girlfriend so want a stable job that I will enjoy so any advice that any could give I would be grateful for

You are right in your observations about Police Officers' being social workers.
I left the police as a PC of 5 years to be a train driver. Now my job revolves around my life and not vice versa. However specials have a better idea of what PC's do as they work alongside them and see what they see. In 5 years I rarely saw PCSO's as they were out doing their own thing.
Not the case with the Specials where I worked. They just went out to drunken kids one night a week and were roped in to police local sporting events/community stuff at weekends. Seemed more about getting officers for free than anything meaningful for those that volunteered. They were quite frustrated on the whole because they wanted to get more involved (particularly with response) but that was how their section was run and they didn't get a choice in it. On the other hand, the PCSO's would often end up also attending at alot of incidents (mainly due to their proximity) and were given alot of the low level crime to attend, though in the usual world of stupidity the force decided that they couldn't be trusted to put a crime report in so an officer would still end up having to attend anyway.
Likewise. Nearly 9 years of dealing with f&*$wits and not a minutes regret from leaving it all behind - you would be the same I would imagine!

Just keep plugging away Jay, expect lots of knock backs. I wrote my TOC a letter asking why i was unsuccessful after so many attempts. Hey presto, 3 interviews all then came at once.

Yes i do, don't know about Mersey rail tbh. Is it a speculative e mail? Try Northern. They do a bit from Lime Street and seem to recruit regularly.

They already have, I don't think they will be recruiting for the Liverpool depot again in the near future.
