Just had the ive been unsuccessful in my application today. To say im starting to get a little frustrated with Northern Rail is a understatement. What exactly are they looking for, a Brain Surgeon to do a Train Cleaners Job ? What im not understanding is I worked for British Rail for 9 Years, I have done Train Cleaning in that time, so forgive me for expecting at least a interview. Im beginning to think its a who you know who works on Northern Rail thing. I'll keep on trying as really want to get back on Northern Rail but just don't know what there looking for. I was a Carer for my Gran the last 9 years and she passed away ea rlier this year, just thinking is this going against me ??????

I wouldn't have thought a good reason for a gap in employment such as this would stand against you . That being said references could be a bit more difficult to come by

Are you in work at the moment ?

Sorry to hear that - I know you have made previous threads about this. The problem with such jobs is that I would imagine they are over subscribed even just for cleaners jobs. Or more worryingly they are using an agency to get staff in to assess before deciding if they are worthy of FT employment.

Keep plugging away but also ask them why you didnt make the cut - again. They may not choose to respond but if they do it may give you an insight as to why you have been so unlucky.

Anyone else round there you can apply for then?

No haven't worked since my Gran passed away in march. First time I haven't worked. That's the only thing I can think counting aginst me. I am also waiting on a Train Presentation Operative at Manchester Victoria but at the moment im expecting a No thanks has my confidence is draining away. I know a lot of people don't like these jobs but id be quite happy doing it and staying in it as a secure job so the only things im thinking are going against me is (1) my Age 46 even though im probably fitter than most people 10 Years younger LOL, and my years being a Carer and not working since March. I had a interview for TPO at Allerton earlier this year around April and knew where I went wrong in that interview so thought if I had a interview for that I would get another chance and put it right.

CLIP They say due to the volume they cant give feedback and I always said when I stopped being a Carer I had my heart set on getting back on the Railway and the Train Presentation Jobs with Northern Rail seemed the best route Honestly thought with my Railway background and experience of Train Cleaning id at least get interviews and eventually pass one and get in. If I was getting interviews id keep the faith

Don't get too downhearted about Northern Rails selection behaviour. In the past, for that exact role at NHTMD, they turned down a perfectly good candidate, and invited one with handguns and violence convictions declared on his application. Pure stupidity as usual.

Hi Andy, Sorry to hear about your application. Throughout my short stint as a Temporary Train Presentation Operative at Leeds for Northern during Tour De France, I now know Northern are more likely to take on somebody that they have used from an agency e.g NRG (Northern Recruitment Group) if they can. So it might be worth registering with NRG or any agency that supply temp staff for TOCs. Blue Arrow also supply temp staff to TOCs too. I was with NRG when I worked with Northern. Nevillehill forum member has just been taken on has a TPO for Nevillehill depot, he also was with NRG. Nevillehill is proof that this works, I have not applied for permanent TPO role because I would have to take a huge paycut.

I'll have a look at that Agency, cheers mate

Just had a look at that Northern Agency.I see there advertising a Train Cleaner position at Hull for 3 Monthes, don't know if its for Northern Rail. Bit to far for me, saying that if I was 90% sure it would lead to a permanent job closer to home in the future id consider relocating for 3 monthes has im single and rent .

Another knockback today, this time for the Train Presentation Operative at Manchester Victoria. Just rang that agency that supplies Train Cleaners for Northern Rail. They supply Train Cleaners further up North from me, Leeds, Hull, Newcastle way. They say they sometimes have a few monthes work available due to people being sick etc. Do you think its worth my while registering with them and if a few monthes work comes up taking it and temporarily relocating just to get it on my CV ??? Since a failed interview back in April ive had around 5 knockbacks and not even got to the interview stage for the Train Presentation Operatives jobs. Im single, live alone and rent so thinking if its a few monthes work further up North would it be worth temporarily relocating to get that on my CV has im thinking if I got that on my CV that ive actually worked for them then theres no excuse not to have a interview. Any advice ??

Hi AndyN,

Great there are opportunities on NRG website for Train Presentation Operatives which will be for Northern. Do you have any family or friends you could stay with closer to Hull, Newcastle or Leeds? this may be the way forward short term rather than relocating yourself, knowing that these positions are temporary. Its well worth going for a temp position because you will gain a Depot Safety Card (I still have mine) which will last for 2 years and being on NRG books you can use them for a reference too. Has previously mentioned Northern are more likely to employ someone from NRG who have been trained with Northern if they can.

I haven't got friends there no but if got somewhere furnished I only need a few bits and bobs to take, 1 van journey. Ive registered with them and sent my cv in. Has you say it looks like the way forward. I wouldn't want to leave my home town permanently as settled here but temporary for a couple of monthes or so I could handle to update my cv and look at the bigger picture

Well a update folks. I have been working at Leeds Station has a Temporary Train Presentation Operative for Northern Rail via Northern Recruitment Group so I now have the relevant experience to put on my CV. I am still currently doing this. After 5 knockbacks for TPO Roles I thought I would try this route has I "Thought" if I actually did the job for the Company theres no reason why I would not at least get a interview. I have successfully done the DSI Online test and have obtained a Depot Safety Card. So when the Allerton Job came up I applied and I was expecting at least a Interview. After that the rest is up to me. Today got the Email that due to the high number of applicants I have been unsuccessful. I know Nevillehill mentioned in a previous thread I may have come across as a bit expectant and maybe I did due to my previous British Rail Experience but after actually doing the job at present then yes, I am now expectant of at least a interview. I have emailed northern in the politest way I could requiring feedback asking why im not getting a interview why im actually doing the job and if theres anything on my application form that's going against me. Last time I checked I wasn't a convicted criminal or mass murderer lol. Joking aside im getting a little ****ed to be honest. Im paying my own way to Leeds to to get the experience on my CV

Hi Nevillehill, an agency rang me today, to see if I could work nights for 10 weeks cleaning exterior of trains for Northern. It was Becca who used to work for NRG. If it was a permanent role would be tempted, so I think I stick with my job at present.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The ten week role was to be based at Neville Hill.

Oh dear is she nicking NRG staff lol.
Yeah it's cleaning ice and snow off the front and fatality cleaning grim job, same jobs at Allerton in Liverpool, looks like all cleaning is going over to agency staff as the railway are fed up with fulltime workers always wanting more money.

Yes, we can't be having people earning a decent wage with security and benefits can we?

Welcome to Tory britain 2014.

And when the Sun reading knuckle scrapers all vote for UKIP, things will get even worse.

Yes well you may have had a strong arguement and agreement from people but dragging party politics into it which has nothing to do with it just seems rather petty.
