Just seen this Vacancy advertised on the Northern Rail Website. It says Shift Work. Anyone know what shift they do and can anyone tell me the nearest station to the Depot

Hi Andy,
I worked with Northern during the Tour De France event and did the night shift as a TPO. Although I worked between 9pm and 6am as I was a temp with recruitment agency, Northerns night team actually start at 8pm and finish at 6pm if you are on night shift. Only other shift I knew about was the day shift which I think started at 8 and finished at 6 (but I could be wrong). Not sure about the nearest station to Neaton Heath.

They are also taking on for Presentation operatives in Leeds and Trainee conductors in York (by the looks of it for a talent pool)

Good luck to all that apply

Leeds is to far for me, im from Warrington. I was gutted I never got the TPO Job at Allerton as that was a short journey on the train and 5 minute walk from the station. Need to know if theres any direct trains to near the Newton Heath Depot or may have to wait for another Allerton job

I would have applied for permanent TPO role in Leeds, but I would have to take a big drop down from £19,000. Tubeboy £23k is fantastic, I would jump at that and apply if I was closer.

It is Darren, but the cost of living is more expensive down here, particularly housing.

I think im going to apply for this job. Been told get the Metro Link from Deansgate, there every 12 minutes and I think Newton Heath Depot is right by the get off point at Newton Heath. 2 questions. (1) Does the opportunity to do overtime come up much on these TPO Jobs ? (2) If successful and got taken on as a TPO and another TPO Vacancy came up at a nearer location could you put in for a transfer to a nearer location ?

It's Dean Lane station you want mate, it's in Newton Heath but there's no actual Metrolink station named Newton Heath.

There's a very good bus service up Oldham Road out of the city centre as well that will take you within a few mins walk of NH depot and finally if it was me I would defo have a word with the depot managers at Vic station and see what the chances were of jumping in a staff van or taxi from Vic up to NH with staff that are already going up there to prep trains etc

Obviously they're not always going to correspond with your shift start times but I bet a lot of them do and it's certainly worth popping your head in in if you're passing through Vic anyway.

Hi Andy,
There is a night shift allowance and its roughly about £1500 (could be a bit more), I was told this by Northern whilst working with TPOs at Tour De France and I have seen night shift allowance figure being advertised on night TPO vacancy in past.

Dean lane metrolink stop is the one you want mate , its literally just over the road from Newton Heath TMD .

The only problem with relying on the staff car at vic is sometimes these get replaced by taxis . If the taxi is already full then you wont be able to get to work .

Nice one mate. Is there much overtime on offer?

Not sure about overtime. This should interest you though... You will work 7 nights on and have 7 nights off. There will be two different night teams so whilst your off the other night team is working. This pattern of working I believe only applies to night staff and not days. Start time is 8pm and you finish at 6. According to TPOs booking holidays is great because you could book a week off between weeks you are not working and have 3 weeks off.
Hope this info will put a smile on your face!

The 7 nights are from Thursday to Wednesday at Leeds, could differ at other stations/depots.

That sounds brilliant, so basically your having a week off every 2 weeks. Work 1 week straight and the next week off, that sounds perfect :D

I know how hard it is to get on Northern Rail so no chickens been hatched here lol. I had a interview for a TPO Job at Allerton and being ex British Rail and experience of cleaning trains before thought id walk straight into it. How wrong I was. Didn't prepare myself for customer based questions as I thought they wouldn't ask has no relevance to being a Train Cleaner. Will be more confident if I got a interview again has id know what questions to expect.

Yeah its hard getting on on the railway , but once you have a foot in the world you will be good .

The customer questions are probably in case you end up being a TPO in another role like cleaning trains in service or stations . You will be wearing uniform so customers do ask questions , its just about knowing how to deal with them

Interviews are different to how they used to be. Years ago it used to be , dress smart, create a good impression and you stand a good chance, even more if you have Railway Connections like I have. When I was interviewed at Allerton I was told they totted up points on a points system for the interview so I presume being smart and creating a good impression doesn't count so much nowadays. Does anyone know how this points system works in interviews for Northern Rail ??

From what I can gather talking to My Manager who does interviws they score you based on answers to questions that are based on the key competencies required for the job , so say they are team working , shift working experience , customer service experience , and initiative

They ask you questions to gauge how well you meet each competency requirement
. So say they ask you about team work , based on how well you demonstrate that you have been an effective team player using real examples dictates what your score is for that question .

At the end your total score gets calculated and used to sift through applicants for the next stage .
Some of it is quite black and white like shift working , you have either done it or you havent . Other times it will be down to the individual managers perception of what you said .

When I had my interview to be a conductor I was asked quite a couple of general non competence based questions at the beginning
1) Tell us about "Insert Name Here"
2)What do you know about Northern Rail

I dont know if those ones are scored or not but it obviously would not look good if you didn't know anything generally about Northern Rail . And couldn't even tell them a breif bit about yourself .

Having conducted competency scores based interviews before myself in another employment even though you are official only supposed to judge a person based on their demonstration of competencies you undoubtedly impart some of your perceptions about the person including how they dressed and come across, their first impression . A candidate that turns up late is obviously not interested in the role , and doesn't dress that smart will never score highly even if they answer every question perfectly .

Because I hadn't had a interview for many years when I had my interview at Allerton I mistakenly thought just turn up smart, mention I worked on British Rail for 9 years and had done Train Cleaning and there should be no problem. Admitidly when they asked me about Northern Rail I couldn't tell them much has I was just there to get a job cleaning Trains. Now I know to research the company. Also know I should have given better descriptions of customer related questions but again didn't think they would be asked due to going for a Train Cleaning job. Now I have experience of the interview and know what they ask if I get a opportunity for another interview I will fully prepare.

I hate questions like tell us about yourself, I have just worked within a team for the Tour de France weekend, it's knowing what to say.

I am not a big fan of them either , it is really tricky , you dont want to go on too much and seem big headed / but at the same time you dont wanna finish too soon and not impress the interviewer . I think they are more as a gauge to get a feeling for you as a person though rather than to be scored upon .

I hate the question "tell me about x company" , all it is is a memory game and see who did the most research about the company ,which anybody who was invited to interview could do . when I did interviews before I never asked abuot the specific company I asked what the person understood about the industry we operated in .
