Today I was planning to take the 14:48 train from Sherburn-in-Elmet to York. I got there in plenty of time (about 14:44) but the train had already left. I checked on Realtime Trains and it had left at 14:42, six minutes early. I have put a complaint in to Northern, but is there likely to be any comeback here?

How late were you arriving to your destination compared to your planned itinerary? At the least you should be entitled to delay repay off of that

You should certainly be entitled to a refund if you didn't travel as a result, or delay repay as you'd likely be 50 min late if taking to the next train.

You should also be able to put a claim in for any consequential loss under the consumer rights act as it could be argued that Northern didn't provide their service with reasonable care or skill.

In fact I walked up to the village and did some work on my laptop while having a pint, and got the 16:40 train to York. Of course I could have sat around waiting for 50 minutes for the next train, but there's not much to do at the station (there is a pub there but would only take cash and I was out).

I'll see what they say about my initial complaint but delay-repay might be the way to go, although the return ticket was only £6.20 so not likely to compensate much.

Train in question seems to have left Sherburn-in-Elmet at its booked arrival time there, i.e. six minutes beforehand.

Indeed, timings are weird. I can see why you wouldn't want to just sit around there for several minutes, especially as it's quite busy with freight.

I also note that the train is not listed on the timetable posters at the station, although maybe they're just old posters.

Looking at it, it's a today only thing that 2R98 stops there, for whatever reason. I suspect the crew were on autopilot or the dockets were incorrect (as occasionally happens).

Either way you will definitely be entitled to delay repay.

As above, it's an altered service apparently for today only. I have no idea why.

Doesn't seem to operate all that regularly. Today, and before that, possibly on Friday 14th June 2024 also.

I would expect a planning error and the dockets may have been wrong too if they've pulled off the long term plan timings - little reason to wait 4 minutes and then clear off so presumably held by signals. Usually a pathing call made a passenger stop by mistake, same thing happened on EMR a few weeks ago and all eastbound Sunday trains ended up making extra calls at Dore and Totley.

Yes. They will probably tell you that train does not stop at Sherburn in Elmet. A 6 minute early departure would mean the driver and guard would be in a lot of trouble.

Well, this is all a bit odd. Thanks for the replies all, I will update the thread if I get any useful response from Northern.

Train in question normally seems to run fast from Selby to York by an alternative route (Hambleton North Curve and then the ECML).

Which would clearly be wrong.

Probably not. It could have been an error with the docket/diagram and they departed when they were told to, or it could just simply have been human error. Nobody is going to get into a "lot of trouble" over an early departure on an unusual stop.

According to FastJP, it does....

And National Rail doesn't plan historical journeys, so no idea when you're searching.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

The Northern app and website also shows the 14.48 as stopping...?

It seems not to be the first time something like that happen with that train

On Time Trains reports that on June 14th, the last time it stopped at Sherburn, it had the same -7 min delay time as today's service

Which I suspect supports the theory of an incorrect docket.

I dont know what timetable that is. This is the Northern timetable see url. The driver and the guard would have to have duff dockets and be new to the route!

It simply just does not stop there , it's a fast train.

But National Rail and the electronic display at the station had it stopping there today. And as far as I know, it did stop there, just several minutes earlier than what all the systems said.

It indeed stopped there, so your claim is perfectly valid

Looks like an an incorrect data input, showing public stops at Sherburn and Church Fesnton when they should have been unadvertised/operating purposes only.
Very unusual circumstance, but your complaint is justified.

That's next week :)
Normally booked via the cut-off line and 25min earlier into York too! No idea why the change today.

It did stop there today. You are looking at the wrong date! For whatever reason, the train was booked to stop there today in all public systems.

You claimed FastJP didn't show it stopping there - I provided a screenshot from FastJP that shows a booked call there.

The OP has tried to travel on an advertised train and has done nothing wrong.

As the Northern app shows:

RTT shows it as Altered WTT, so it was definitely booked to stop there

Well, Sherburn is hardly a sprawling metropolis but there was one other person on the station in the same boat as me - they were wanting the 14:48 but it had already left when they got there.

I wonder if anyone actually managed to board at Sherburn?

I see on RTT it also departed Church Fenton 2 minutes before it was due to have arrived there (having actually arrived 10 minutes early).

And then, ironically, got into York 5 minutes late!
