For many years the autoannouncers in SWT-land pronounced Micheldever as "MICH-el-dee-ver". Eventually they listened to the locals' complaints and got Phil and Celia to rerecord it with the correct "mich-el-DEV-er".

Just been on a 321 from Doncaster to home, it announced its 'this is x. This train is for Leeds. The next station will be y' long before the doors opened (which is when it normally announces such things).

I've seen all sorts of oddities on West Anglia 317s, my favourite being one where the PIS system got stuck on the calling pattern for the service it had just worked, a slow Liverpool Street - Cambridge. It was now working a fast Cambridge - Liverpool Street, and would announce "We are now approaching..." when leaving stations and when passing through the ones that fast services don't stop at! Announcements played at stations would announce the train being for Cambridge and that the next stop was the one we had last stopped at. Confused a fair few people!

I've noticed a couple of oddities on Southern's 377s beforehand.

Once, when on a Brighton - Southampton service routed via Eastleigh (a couple of services a day are routed this way), the automated announcement missed out Eastleigh and read out "Fareham (long pause), Southampton". I can imagine more than a few passengers were confused.

On an Arun Valley service to Southampton Central, the automated announcement, as soon as the train departed Chichester, declared that the train was going to Portsmouth, until the guard read out stops.

Was on southern last night and it said "amd" instead of "and".

Chiltern also tells you to change at harrow for london underground but no mention at rickmansworth or marylebone about the underground :s

Rickmansworth isnt a recognised interchange with NR is it? Cant remember seeing the double arrow logo on the map.

Though no idea why they dont announce it at Marylebone, last time i used them im sure they did. Mind I was coming from brum. Not done the met branch for ages.

That was because there was no recording for 'Eastleigh' so it just missed it out but still displayed it on the screens.

Think it has been fixed now.

Couple of Merseyrail ones..

'Please keep your feet off the....emergency information posters located in each coach on this train'.
Which was a cross between 'Please keep your feet of the seats' and 'Your attention is drawn to the emergency information posters located in each coach on this train.

On approach to Chester, which has been ongoing for a while now 'Please change here for..please mind the gap between the train and the platform edge'

Also, Meols, on the Wirral, pronounced as Mells. When the 'The next station is Meols' is said, kind of sounds like 'The next station smells'. :D

Quite often when I'm on a merseyrail service into Chester
"This train is for please ensure you take all your luggage and personal belongings with you"
Please not-The announcement is not exact but you see where I'm coming form

I noticed today that Merseyrail have sawn off the and Chester Zoo from the Bache announcement Alight here for Countess of Chester Hospital....
The announcer plainly breaks off in mid-sentence with a rising cadence.
This is since the bus connection changed to Chester.
Cheaper than re-recording it I suppose.

I demand that for better understanding all voiced announcements should pronounce place-names with the correct regional accent

In some places, you get that with the guards anyway! I recall when I was on a Leeds - Huddersfield stopper and the guard couldn't have had a more local accent (not surprising but even on the trains, it is unusual to hear things said the same way you'd expect to hear them!)

Yes that's the one I was on about, I didn't know exactly what it was.

That's probably right as well about Meols!

Yes I noticed this a while ago as well. I wonder why though, you don't go to hospital on a train if you have an injury and I doubt you would go to visit either unless from a distance, but Chester Zoo is much more of an importance to the Hospital!

Couple years ago one of the codes for a Portsmouth to Brighton run on 377's had Bosham, Fishersgate, Chichester. Those that know the area will know it should have said Fishbourne and that the routing shown would have made for an interesting journey!

Perhaps you could be visiting for a check-up or non-emergency injury (such as a bad back), in which case the train is a feasible option. I would have thought public transport played a rather salient role in a hospital's accessibility. You're going to have to say that last sentence again too - surely a hospital is infinitely more important than a zoo? I would certainly hope a hospital would be announced before a zoo too!

Off topic, but I'd never heard of Meols until Saturday - when I tried to test the voice recognition on a satnav. I spoke 'Hatfield' and it came up with Meols - and that it was around 200 miles away. God knows how it misheard one for the other.

And now I read it mentioned on here. Spooky. I guess it's going to feature somewhere else on the news/TV/radio this week and totally freak me out!

Correct me if i am wrong because i have not lived there for about 2 years but The TW Metro one was terrible. I don't know if the woman is robotic but she has the most annoying voice ever and sound so stupid saying local places without the accent.

When they turned it on as well it would get stuck for example

"This is S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-St Peters" lol

Or the volume was wrong

(Loud) BING (that annoying bell)
(Quiet) This is sunderland
(Loud) FOR SUNDERLAND CITY CENTRE

They turned her off after a week.....

Yes, still there. Still annoying.

She seems to suffer from AQI, announcing things like "This train is for the Airport? The next station is Haymarket?" Well, if the train doesn't know where it's going...!

I am inclined to think, given I have seen this happen a few times, and a recent North downs line leaving guildord springs to mind, that this may be a driver input code error putting in the route the wrong way round.

The 17:30 Pompey Lil express had this problem today ... the train left guildford, the display announced farncombe (though it didnt stop there), and someone then failed to alight at Godalming ... much to his displeasure <(. and as he expressed displeasure te the guard the train happily announced the next station would be godalming, when it would in fact be haslemere. I think the thing was switched off to avoid futher havoc. As I say ... possibly a side effect of a specific driver input (or lack of input) code error . But I am only guessing.

If it is announcing stations as you are just leaving them then it is usually because the CIS wasn't changed and is still on it's previous journey. This tends to happen during delays when there are tight turnarounds.

"This is Linlithgow. Change here for services to Breich." On a 170 Edinburgh-bound recently.

One I've noticed on several occasions on the Southport line of the Merseyrail network is repeating, "This train is for Southport. The next station is Bootle Oriel Road" all the way to Southport, some twelve additional stops away. It's always Bootle Oriel Road that gets repeated too.

I can also echo the one at Chester. In addition to the rising intonation of "Countess of Chester Hospital", there is "And for stations to Warrington, Manchester and Birmingham" at Liverpool South Parkway, Birmingham being read out with the same rising intonation and sounding very odd.

"The next station is Old Street. Alight here for Moorfields Eye Hospital. Change here for National Rail services."

Nothing wrong with that, except at the weekend and early morning/late night when the Northern City Line is closed. ;)

Don't know if they still do as it's been a while, but at one point the 365s announced Kings Cross as "Blondon Kings Cross", similarly "Bletchworth Garden City", and a bit of clipping on the recording made Huntingdon sound positively rude...

Cheers,

Barry

I think it's 'Dlondon' more than 'Blondon' and wonder if it was cut from the voice artist recording 'And London King's Cross' and some bright spark thinking of just cutting off the 'and' to save needing to have the stations read out again on their own?

But as for the above announcement, if it said the NEXT station is Old Street, presumably it's at Moorgate? In which case it shouldn't be saying Moorfields Eye Hospital as that's at Old Street!

Of course it's correct for saying National Rail services - but at both Moorgate and Old Street, LUL isn't quite clear what to write, with one saying National Rail services to Stevenage (Moorgate) and the other saying National Rail services to Welwyn. For one, few trains go on to Stevenage and the other - why not Welwyn Garden City? There's no actual station called Welwyn, and trains don't go on to Welwyn North.

That's how the announcements go on the Tube (at least on the Northern line). They use "the next station is..." on the approach to a station.
