You're absolutely right, I had Voyagers (and the doors at the actual corridor connection) on the mind. I've never had an issue with them that I recall though.

I've just been watching a 390 walkthrough video on YouTube looking for sensors above the doors! :lol:

Given the 390s are over 20 years old and carry thousands of passengers a day and this thread is the only place I've ever seen these issues mentioned, I think this is a bit of a non-issue.

Pendolinos have had these since 2001 internally, the fact that they haven't been replaced suggests the issues you raise are over-exaggerated.
If the button on an internal door doesn't work it's very unlikely that you will be overcarried and miss your stop. If you don't press the button to open an external door hard enough you're at risk of being overcarried as you have far less time to react.

I thought we were mainly talking about exit door buttons (external) - though I am not too sure whether the original Class 385 concern was talking about external or internal buttons. As stated above, the reason is not that they are very reliable, but rather that it's not a big deal with internal buttons.

Are there any case studies / examples of where these buttons are actually causing an issue, accessibility or otherwise?

Given how much thought it put into accessibility when designing a modern train and the associated legislation, if there were genuine concerns, then I doubt we'd see them anywhere, even modern pedestrian crossings are now touch sensitive rather than a physical button.

To my knowledge, the only examples of these are the ones installed in Canary Wharf during Covid for hands-free operation, which were not intended to be permanent anyway. Pedestrian crossings are not going to have touch sensitive buttons. In fact, we are likely to see more 'pedestrian-authority' crossings over the years, which ditch pedestrian operation entirely.

There's no need for a case study on the type of buttons. It is objective, that a sensor is less reliable than a physical button. Have you ever gone to a public bathroom and struggled to use the water/soap/dryer because there is a sensor to activate them? The issue with sensors is that their location needs to be extremely precise and clearly labeled. The distance from your hand to the button needed for triggering is not clear. The lack of tactile feedback is an issue for blind users. There is no reason to scrap physical buttons - it works, there is nothing to 'fix'.

There are touch buttons on Nottingham Incentro trams and since their introduction in 2004 I've not experienced any issues at all with these types of buttons.

Plenty of them in Sheffield, been around a fair few years, I'd guess at least 15.

You've obviously not tried to use the buttons that kept falling apart on the Class 379's.

Capacitive sensors are extremely reliable, widespread and cheaply available. Physical buttons can have all sorts of issues that a capacitive sensor is immune to.

Some units have the fake buttons where you don't actually press it but rather wave at a sensor above the door which is pointing at where the fake button is. The connecting doors on 168s and 170s are an example of this.

I've not seen actual touch buttons on any UK stock, I don't recall them on Pendolinos certainly.

Lots of trains have this, but are often linked to the sensor.

They are often prone to failing, but can normally be very easily reset, presuming a crew member is aware.

Is it? In my experience capacitive switches are more reliable than physical ones.

In my opinion, the problem I have with the button is that they don’t register a press in all of the area that is supposed to be the button. There have been many times where I thought that the door was broken when in fact I was pressing the wrong part of the button.

We are still opening new lines without level boarding, I wouldn't be so confident the industry has the needs of the disabled as a priority.

Didn't the 390s have buttons that were clear plastic with a tiny sensor in the middle on the external side before they were replaced with push buttons?

Touch sensitive are a whole different issue as they don't work with most prosthetic's

You're claiming sensors are less reliable than physical buttons, the emphasis is on you to provide evidence to support this, in 20 years of using Pendolinos with touch sensitive internal buttons, I've never known one fail in a way that wouldn't also render a door with push buttons useless.

Regarding accessibility for blind people, again, where is your supporting evidence to back up this claim? For internal doors, you can tell by touch that the door in front of you has opened and for external doors, the audible hustle alarm that sounds when the door opens is a dead giveaway...

It's a non-issue.

What's the 'old style'? I wouldn't want to see a return of the pneumatic door buttons of the class 317. They take so long to actually do somehting that people who don't know them give a quick press then wonder why the doors aren't opening. So they give it another quick press, until a kind person helps them or the train leaves.

What's the 'old style'?

Presumably the fairly standard pushbutton with a wide yellow plastic circle embossed with a symbol for what it does, carrying a Braille inscription around it. These are pretty standard in the UK, though Alstom seems to use a slightly different design for external doors on Aventras.

I do half recall now that Pendolinos perhaps did have the bad design noted above on the outside of the external doors when built - that these were replaced with the more standard design probably does imply there was a problem!

Could a simple fix be to add a beep sound to signal the button has been pressed?
The last thing I want is more noise. The buttons on, for example, the 150s, 455s and 800s work perfectly well. What's to improve?

I don't like them either. The old ones, I could feel the button move and the wait sign lit up instantly. The newer ones have no feedback and it takes two or three seconds for the red light on or around the button to illuminate. Just long enough for me to wonder whether the button is working. Sometimes they don't work at all, far more often than the old design. In what way is this better? I'm going to guess that the new version is cheaper.

The ones used on Class 318/320/334/380 where you can press and hold the button before the train stops, and the doors open instantly once released by driver.

The 385 buttons are horrible in comparison.

On what fleet and at what frequency do you find faulty sensor buttons?

For balance, physical push buttons also fail, nothing is perfect.

The new DLR trains have these buttons. Felt awful when I used it for the first time.

It's just something you're not used to, give it a while and it'll become normal.

There was probably similar discussions when switching from slam doors with physical handles to electric plug doors with buttons!

Erm, they break frequently. You probably just haven't noticed, which is unsurprising, because when they're broken the doors are isolated and left open. I don't need to point out why the external doors being isolated is rather more serious an issue. Perhaps be a tad more careful with your assumptions!

The slam doors were around very recently, and this was under regular discussion. Most people couldn't wait for doors that open without being incredibly heavy and awkward to unlatch. Many disabled people weren't able to open or close the door whatsoever without assistance. Many staff were also embarrassed by the awkwardness and risk of injury. It seems rather insensitive of you to argue that the new doors aren't better.

How would most people (i.e not fitters) be able to differentiate between a button failure and some other failure of the door system?

The point being made was that the poster was, quite unsafely, relying on an availability bias. As to the availability of data about that question I don't have any access to any which is why I didn't address it.

Personal experience. Do they work at all with gloves? Massive oversight, if not.
That is a terrifying thought. I hope it's just a dodgy button you encountered and they do work with gloves almost all the time. Does anyone know?
