Note, I am a regular user of the forum but have posted this on an alternative account for obvious reasons.

So today (25/08/23) my wife was given a TIR on a service from Leeds to York, this was because she had bought a ticket online on wednesday evening and at some point in the booking process online we believe the date either reset back to the 24th, or we clicked the wrong date. The plan was always for her to travel on the Friday. She obviously therefore did not have a VALID ticket for the travel she was making on the Friday, as the ticket was an off peak day return for the 24th.

The ticket was correctly purchased using the railstaff website and she was carrying her spouses travelcard for this. (This is all valid)

The day went as follows:

My wife cycles to Leeds station.
She tries to get through the barriers.
She cannot get through (this is now obviously because the ticket isnt valid)
1 member of staff starts looking at the ticket apparently slightly confused, because it looks valid (probably because they dont see the date issue)
A second member of staff glances at it and opens the barrier to let her through and she locks up her bike on the platform at Leeds.
She has her ticket checked by the guard on the TPE service, who notices the date is off and issues the TIR (full compliance is given with respect to giving details etc)
No additional ticket is sold to her or attempted to be given to her.
She is given advice to wait or call TPE in the next 2 days to explain what has happened (though i am not sure what number or whom she would call
She buys a new ticket in York for her journey back.

Asking the forum hive mind for advice/what would you do in this situation (we have the TIR printoff with all the info on etc....)

Its a silly one (hence the user name)

Much love to all.

Staff travel is not my area of expertise but I'm sure others will be able to assist. In the meantime it's probably best being proactive and having a word with your union rep and/or your manager as there will almost certainly be questions for you to answer at work.

You’re best definitely informing your union rep / Manager asap and explain what’s happened as you are responsible for everyone who uses your facilities.

One thing I will say is the RST website is awful and I’ve nearly been caught out by it too and seems so buggy.

You say that it was always the plan to travel on Friday. Is there any reason for this that you can prove for example dentists appointment? If so it may help back up the genuine mistake reason you advanced?

On the RSTL site I've noticed the date revert on it's own whilst navigating pages, without requesting it.

But checking the purchase at the end is essential. Notify line manager & union as suggested above.

Just for the record, my wife has had a response from Trans Pennine indicating that on this one occasion that have closed the matter and no further action will be taken.

Yes it was a genuine mistake that was made and one we will definitely not make again.

But it is i think a good example to be honest, factual and clear with any correspondence and that a genuine mistake has been treated as such.

Thanks to all on here who regularly contribute to the discussions as i am a general lurker on this page of the forum, but not a contributor as not my area of expertise, and i feel that the knowledge i have gained from here allowed me to help my wife write the correct response in both style and information to include.

Kind regards,

I’m pleased that there has been an outbreak of common sense. Naturally it is absolutely essential that she travel with the correct ticket going forward.

I have a feeling, along with common sense, that whomever handled the case at TPE realised it was a Staff Travel matter and didn't want to get either of you in trouble with RSTL... good on them
