Replacement buses may not be able to carry large luggage or bicycles which the train is able to carry, so if you're planning on taking either or both of them then you still may have problems and I imagine a lot of passengers to the Lake District do take luggage.

When the Arnside viaduct was closed and replacement buses were being used, they seemed to cope very well with the amount of luggage that was being carted around (don't know about bikes though)

When I've had to use a rail replacement, they have most often been coaches so the luggage situation would actually be much easier than on a train.

Sheffield Line was being driven by York DTMs with Frieghtliner drivers on hire to route-conduct the service. Additionally, a Driver Manager from East Midlands Trains was seen driving one.

How York DTMs know anything about 170's is beyond me.

And how EMT staff are still compentent on 170 also escapes me, especially as 170/3s are different than their old ones.

Especially as it is a bank holiday so I suspect that the majority of passengers heading for Windermere on Friday will have luggage with them.

The last time I went to Windermere it was around lunchtime on the Friday before a Bank holiday weekend. The train was rammed when I boarded at Oxenholme & most of the doorways had luggage in them as the racks were already overflowing. A lot of people had large rucksacks & tents etc with them.

Bikes is an issue but a coach will hold more luggage than the train comfortably and will load and unload much easier than people clambernig over bags. That being said the strike is off so it's all irrelevant now

Friday's strike has been 'suspended'

FTPE said no agreement had been made on the pay settlement but industrial action had been suspended to allow for "meaningful discussions to continue".
