The second of the two runs has operated currently 72 minute early with set TP02 and 68022
It should have been the first path, rang out on that that then held to a middle time let us go then cancelled the 1st path and put us on the 2nd!!!

To change ends the drivers don't have to walk all the way outside do they? Isn't the outside walk just the length of the loco, then into the carriage at the loco end and walk through to the trailer cab?

The driver could walk through the train from DT towards rear of train and alght at the Guard area to go trackside which would reduce trackside walking.
Would then walk length of loco and enter cab, don't know the current method of work at Middlesbrough but would need tweaking for loco hauled(maybe a small lit cess side pathway).

it may not be possible to relock them from track level as the guards panel will be open.

You can close the guards office exterior door from the track level. There is a switch similar to that found on the current TPE fleets.

Or alternatively ask the guard to close it from inside.

it simply isnt that straightforward. TPE do not seem to have assured themselves that the supplier was supplying the right product to the right spec. You seem to think that they shouldn't be doing this. I suggest this is wrong.

Suggestions aren't cold hard facts.

CAF have delivered a product not fit for service, how is that the fault of TPE? It simply isn't.
CAF will undoubtedly fix the issue in time, but from what I was told (most likely third/fourth hand), this being 2 weeks back too where these issues started to crop up, they're not the best company to work with.

Who loses out? The passenger, oh that's me.

OK then - you are wrong. Cold enough?

You don't seem able to grasp the concepts of quality assurance and quality control. As the customer in these circumstances you do not sit back and wait for the product. This isn't the same as your window analogy. This is a multi million pound investment in new equipment and you seem to think you just fire and forget and then wonder why things go wrong. That is simply preposterous.

As a customer in these situations YOU go out to the manufacturer and asses and audit their processes, procedures and techniques and ensure they meet your standards before you start. You make sure they absolutely understand your specification, the delivery parameters and the acceptance criteria at the start. You then check the build at various stages of the project. You have agents or your own people on site to monitor the build and deal with any change issues that crop up to keep the production line moving and communication flowing. This helps avoid any uncontrolled change to specification or materials used in construction and tries to ensure you get a quality product first time. This is all fairly obvious project management stuff.

If you take your approach you lose the chance to head these issues of early, before they become a delay to delivery.

I do have some experience in exactly this type of thing!

The issue is not that there are technical difficulties, as there are with any new build. It's that the quick delivery was a key part of a winning franchise bid, and they were promised for December 2017.

A NOVA 3 looks like it's due to head down to Crewe South Yard today under one of two paths
ACTIVATED: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O56873/2018/11/14/advanced
NOT YET ACTIVE: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/K97154/2018/11/14/advanced

This maybe freeing up room ahead of a delivery tomorrow from Portbury

The Portbury to Manchester, Didcot West Curve.

Attention was required to the wrapping.

Except that they are not "trains," just locos, so a lot less to go wrong.
OK then if you are going to play that game, Class 66 and the new wagons EWS bought from Thrall, or the various coal hoppers, flats, box wagons etc Freightliner, GBRf et al bought. Those are “trains”.

The amount of plastic wrapping on that is just ridiculous. We're going through an environmental crisis and plastic pollution plays a big part in that - so why on earth are trains of all things needlessly being wrapped in plastic, just for the plastic to be disposed of once the train reaches Manchester?

And let's be honest, they'll put it through the wash before it's first journey

Who cares?

The point is passengers will not get the train service promised by TPE because they and there train builder CAF were way off the mark on how quickly these Mk5a sets (Nova 3) would be built, tested, trained on and then put into service. So not before May 2019 now.

We also have no idea how reliable they will eventually be on the Trans-Pennine route.

Passengers losing out again!

Were they deck cargo? Could be to keep sea spray off

I can't ever remember seeing rolling stock in the UK being wrapped to the extent that these Mk5a sets have been, and not seen any photo's of these sets before wrapped although i did see one vehicle still wrapped at the Manchester International Depot the other week when four sets were outside on show.

Plenty of plastic on the railways these days. The loco-hauled Mark 5s will be one of the few things that ain't plastic!

They are wrapped due to damage on the vinyls happening and they want to both protect it and also to easily see where the scrapes are happening. The issue is what's happened here with a plastic wrap coming lose. Very lucky that the photo of it flapping when going through a station is very worrying. If that was to hit someone or wrap around them at high speed the consequences could be quite fatal!
