Set just passed Wilmslow now from the Intl Depot down to Stafford - don't know the number unfortunately as I'm on a Pendolino atm.

I drove to Mauldeth Road to see it since it's passing Heaton Chapel at 06:03 tomorrow and I've no intention to be up so early on my day off! However, it really does look smart and the 68 was chattering away nicely at the rear. I also foresee a problem with 5 cars being too short; let's hope they are strengthened to six or seven in years to come.
Good stuff wonder which 68 is on that night run.

It's 68020 again with set TP02

Here is the deliveries in order they arrived along with set number, TP01 arrived most recently after coming direct from the test track, it came into the UK via an unknown port and then moved to a facility in Holyhead to be railed and was hauled from there
Delivered 25th May 2018 - Set TP02 - from Portbury (Bristol)
Delivered 15th June 2018 - Set TP03 - from Portbury (Bristol)
Delivered 17th July 2018 - Set TP04 - from Portbury (Bristol)
Delivered 27th July 2018 - Set TP01 - from Holyhead
Do we know which 68 is in which set? Or aren't they fixed to a set?

Operationally, they'll swap between sets as required, in a similar fashion to the LNER 91s. (Each Mk4 rake is formed into a BNxx rake, from BN01 to BN30.)

68020 was outside (on its own) the International depot shed earlier, with a DRS van alongside and 4 DRS blokes having a good look at something under the solebar.

It's got a hydrostatic oil leak so had to stop them over.
I trust that won't be taken as a carriage-set fault...
Well a slightly different kind of progress. Personally, I like the look of them. In an ideal world I'd like it to display thinks like what check in desk your flight is at the airport and connecting train platform information, but that would require some form out outside connection from what might well be a self contained device. Any other thoughts?

I hadn't noticed that thread before unfortunately but maybe the setup will be similar to the experience described at https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/tpes-new-pis-too-much-information.169280/ by another member. But I agree with you that the radio on that clip means it isn't going to be used on the sort of over the top setup on the roof like on EMT 158s and a screen (near the doors?) is more likely.
Call me a pedant, but it sounds like the voiceover mispronounces the word "escalator" as "esculator". Or am I imagining it?

I'd say I quite like that. It's not unusual for airlines to show a video of "here's how you connect at this airport" - why not also for major railway stations?

Driver training has now started.
Introduction expected - and required - from December timetable I hear.

No driver training has started on the Mk5's TPE don't even have a training course designed for them yet. Drivers have only been trained on 68's and a MK5 course is supposed to follow later this year.
They are hoped to be in service for December if they have sufficient staff members trained.

No TPE Mk5a training. All movements at the moment are being undertaken by Freightliner Heavy Haul.
That's alright then. Mind you, I think they were also required to introduce trains of mark 3 coaches some time ago too, weren't they? How did that go?

Well training on 68s is better than nothing. At least that is some progress beyond just a few instructors.
Aren't the cabs in the MK5A DTs extremely similar to that of the modified TPE Class 68s?

They are similar but it's a lot more than just the cab layout you need to know. Without the stock you are only trained the basic 68 and not all the screens for door controls, faults etc. It's a differant experience as well driving a DT with the loco pushing so handling needed for that.

The cabs are identical apart from there is no direct air brake in the DT. However drivers still need training on the coaches and how they will handle, there are also several systems in the cabs which they haven't been taught about yet as they only work when the coaches are attached. Things are moving along but many still believe it's touch and go whether they are seen in passenger use this year.

They were required to operate mk3 stock in service by the end of 2017. They achieved this by running 1 round trip between Manchester Piccadilly and the airport last December. This avoided a breach of contract as no service levels were attached to the use of mk3 stock. The plan to introduce them this year was dropped following protests from disability access groups.
