They were required to operate mk3 stock in service by the end of 2017. They achieved this by running 1 round trip between Manchester Piccadilly and the airport last December. This avoided a breach of contract as no service levels were attached to the use of mk3 stock. The plan to introduce them this year was dropped following protests from disability access groups.
Wasn't part of the reasoning for the mk3 idea for helping with driver familiarisation? Obviously it wouldn't help with the aspects related specifically to the Mk5a sets, mind.

Yes it was meant to simulate a trailing load but as the Drivers will need training and handling on a mk5A set there is little to gain from using the mk3. Space will be needed at Crewe too when a mk5A is released to TPE for training so the mk3 rake will need to go anyway.

Any trips for them lately? All gone quiet. I’d have expected the mileage runs to have been well underway now, unless an issue has been identified.

Doesn't seem to have run since the overnight tests on 31 August.

Set 1 should be out tonight with 68020 and it would be worth keeping an eye on Portbury Automotive Terminal next week on Realtimetrains

Out tonight on brake tests Mid-stafford-warrington-stafford-mid. It will follow 68025 light engine Basford Hall to Mid Thursday morning. Train set 1 should then be out to Bletchley on Friday morning.

It's currently out again heading down to Bletchly and back, currently around Stafford (0705)

Reported as 68020 again but this time with set TP01 but this hasn't been confirmed

UPDATE: Confirmed as set TP01 it also this time had carriage letters displaying on the digital displays outside of the train

Great picture Andy.

Does anyone know when we can expect to see other 68s out on test runs?
Out on Monday afternoon/evening to Bletchley via Styal line to Crewe and Tuesday/Thursday morning run like today on off via Chat Moss.

Any idea as to what locos are to be used? I believe the run I saw had 47s or 57s IIRC.

It was 47813 and 47812 the last time I saw this move. I'd be interested to know if it's likely to be different traction this time around as well
