BBC postpones showing Top Gear train crash

The BBC has postponed showing footage, scheduled to air on Top Gear on Sunday night (4 February), of a train crashing into a family car parked on a level crossing.

Programme bosses took the last minute decision following last week's fatal accident in which one teenager was killed in a car on a level crossing near Invergordon in the Scottish Highlands and two others were seriously injured. Last week a jury recorded a verdict of accidental death at an inquest into the death of two teenage girls on a level crossing in Elsenham, Essex, in December 2005.

The previous Top Gear show (28 January) prompted complaints from viewers and charity Headway about a discussion of Richard Hammond's high speed car crash and subsequent brain injury in which the presenter was asked by Jeremy Clarkson if he was "mental" and James May offered Hammond a tissue in case he started dribbling. Programme bosses are understood to have been uneasy about how the show's laddish style would sit in the light of recent level crossing related tragedies.

A preview of last night's show on the BBC Top Gear website said "we crashed a really big train into a French people carrier" and continued: "It’s a tragic fact that one person dies each month in an accident at a railway level crossing, usually while trying to jump the lights. In a genuine effort to stop this, we teamed up with Railtrack [sic] to show you what happens when hundreds of tonnes of locomotive crash into a car. And, just to prove that even a five-star NCAP [safety] rating won’t help you, we used a Renault Espace."

The stunt, which is expected to be shown later in the current Top Gear series, forms part of a £3m awareness campaign by Network Rail to warn drivers of the risks of not taking sufficient care at level crossings.

Network Rail, which also publicised the footage in advance of last night's programme and was unaware of the decision to withhold the feature, said the crash was "overseen by Jeremy Clarkson" and "safely supervised by Network Rail specialists". It features an unmanned, 107-tonne Class 31 diesel locomotive operated by remote control crashing into a car at "speed of approaching 70mph". The aftermath is described as "shocking". Filming took place in Lincolnshire.

Last week Iain Coucher, Network Rail’s deputy chief executive, said: "Though light-hearted in tone, the message is serious: Don't run the risk at level crossings. Our people worked hard for months to safely plan this staged event and the results are breathtaking. Level crossings are safe if used correctly so don't misuse them."

A spokesman for the BBC said it had decided not to show the item in light of Friday's tragic accident and no date had been confirmed for airing the footage.

There's another, so it will be put off again.

The really sad thing about it, is that by showing it the idea is to prevent future incidents, but it is considered too sensitive to be shown in the weeks following an incident, and we never seem to go for long without an incident.

Very worrying that people seem totally incapable of learning from any of these incidents.

It needs to be shown. Just look how many accidents have been seen in just a matter of weeks! You can see from the images that the crossing lights are clearly working so it was clearly down to the motorist involved. It's not just the families of the victims who suffer - what about the train driver? There is now a possibility he will never return to work thinking he is responsible for the death of someone when in actual fact there is likely to be nothing he could have done to prevent this.

The cirucumstances of the Irvine incident ARE NOT known yet, so please dont start spoutng about the Van driver "knowing better" and getting all Angry, including you Ali. As far as we know, he could of been parked next to the crossing and didnt leave enough Clearance etc.

It is abit of an own goal for Network Rail though, especially as most of there vans have the Level Crossing awareness logo on the back. Wetherever the cirumstances, to the press it will still look bad.

The same can be said for any of these incidents. Whilst a lot do seem down to driver incompetance, it's not always the case. I have to say, I think roads in general would be a hell of a lot safer if there was a shift in attitude from blaiming the driver to looking at the full picture (like with train and air crashes etc), that and doing more to get the idiots off the roads. In recent years, more does seem to be being done in terms of helping drivers (both in terms of the roads, and the vehicles themselves), but it's very slow, and isn't keeping pace with the increasingly difficult conditions.
Anyway, lets hope the footage is on tonight, although I'm not hopeful (if the level crossing accidents arn't used as an excuse, the derailment probably will be).

Probably. I don't think the news mentioned the level crossing incident that took place in the early morning of the same day as the Pendo derailment involving that NR van. Good to see this footage will be shown though.

I was told the Ped was radio controlled from the following Ped,braking distance seems about right for a Ped on loco brake only.As for using the deadmans pedal I think that would be hard to time & using an AWS ramp had more chance of being damaged by the totalled espace so would be too risky for NR to sanction.

I watched it in the messroom at work & when the video of our 150 came on attacking that plastic Pig there was a good cheer!!
