OMG - hock: That is so true about the pensioners. One ran into the side of a pig at Woodsford 38 L/C about 12 years ago - up in flames - R.I.P. Driver didn't know a thing until the Guard told him after the train came to a halt. O.A.P.'s and automatics don't mix. Another old woman killed 4 people in New Milton with an automatic. Another Womble turned right at Wool and grounded the car on the track. I'm amazed it didn't short out the 3rd rail and go up in flames.
Funny what JC :notworth: says about the High Vis vest. The trains bounce off you now when you wear them. (We never used to wear HV vests walking into the depot etc and we used to get killed all the time ! ). Daft thing is - you have to put your vest on to get out of your train - to talk on the phone -which is next to your cab - and there is nothing else which could approach you from the cess except maybe the odd mouse or beetle. Scary.
Hope the 31 was OK afterwards and its future is secure. Amazing how it stays on the track. If you look at this one, the trains only doing 20mph or so when it hits a car and it comes off. Don't know how to insert the proper YouTube link -

Whether the train derails tends to depend on various circumstances. In general its down to something substantial (often the engine) either getting under the wheels, or getting under something like the bogie frame, traction motor or gearbox. Oviously, the weight of the rail vehicle is also a factor, so a 120t loco is less likely to derail than a unit or driving trailer weighing 1/3 of that. I'm sure with the staged crash they set it up so as to make a derailment very unlikely, and it was done on a straight piece of plain line so a derailment would have had less consequence (probably just running on the ballast, rarther than going totally of the track or falling over).

To derail a train you need an upwards and sideways force. By hitting the car it may have an upwards force but to derail it, it still requires the sideways force. Example of this is at Heck where the GNER train struck the land rover and as it returned to the rails, a piece of metal from the land rover obstructed the wheels return to the rails.

To be honest, although I understand family's need time to greeve [sp] etc., I think that the corssing accidents leading up to the video being shown should have made the BBC put it on sooner rather than later!

I wonder why they didn't envisage people going round half-barriers when they designed them? I suppose people had sense then.

Thanks matt!! i dont derail that often! the best one has to be the halls bogie at Cockcrow hill, no cause lol just didnt like the rails!

i derail more than him, once I set off....minus train!
Done that before, we've had some good derailments in the past lol!
