Now that's what I hate. You get an announcement once and then a few seconds later you get practically the same thing all over again.

Very good :)

Then realise you got the same message with some extra added. All to help the fellow passenger.

Remember not all those who use our public transport system at every station do not have full retention of their faculties and they may need to be told things which they may never have heard before.

Or do you thin those with disabilities like blindness or deafness should not be able to see or hear the same notices we do and take for granted and yet moan about.

Nowt like being discriminatory is there :/

The most annoying example was the previously sponsored announcements during the days of National Express East Anglia.

Do we really need to hear that "National Express and a newspaper group are working together to provide a tidier on train environment"

'Please keep the aisles clear as there is a trolley passing through the the train' is really appropriate when there is literally nowhere else to stand as the train is packed (I'm looking at you EMT)
And I don't need to be told what day of the week it is or that we are ONTIME and definitely not 'we are running 6 mins down due to being held at a signal upon leaving Sheffield station, I am unaware what the problem was but it was obviously not serious as it turned to green' or something along those lines after leaving DBY on a SHF to STP service.
Also not interested that the comedy festival sponsored by Dave were doing something on the concourse LAST WEEK.

The ones that annoy me:

"Virgin Trains has a no-smoking policy." It has been illegal to smoke on trains since 2005 and well before that it was only allowed in designated smoking carriages.

"The doors will remain locked until the train has come to a standstill." I should hope so.

And what is the point, on a packed Pendolino, of telling passengers to find time to read the safety instructions in the vestibule. Imagine the chaos if they all followed that instruction.

if the safety instructions are that important they should be on a card in the seat backs just like aircraft.

Last week had a trip to the lakes. After every station we called at we had the "loop" of taped announcements including the security "please don't leave any unnattended blah blah blah". At the last stop the guard came on "Sorry to add yet another announcement...."

Can't the taped loop be shortened and speeded up, and cut out all the unncecessary stuff; all we need is "the final destination is XXX and the next station is XXX". Do we NEED anything else??

Grrrr.....
We already have a thread going on this under the topic "Too much information". Mosr recent post 22 nd March

"Please keep your belongings with you at all times."

The thing with this, is if you're on your own and you're just popping up to the buffet or toilet. If I do so, I usually leave my jacket and backpack on my seat. So that people know the seat there is occupied. I do so if people are seated nearby. If not I would take my belongings with me. If I take all my belongings with me, I could come back and then find my seat then occupied!

If you see anything please report to a member of staff or a police officer.

Are police officers usually onboard trains?!

Or the train manager should stand in the aisles waving his/her arms around, demonstrating where the emergency exits are .

And preferably he should be wearing high heels and a very short skirt

One day it will be like the airlines when someone will come along, tap you on your shoulder and tell you to take your earphones out do you have to listen to the ruddy announcements. Worse than the announcements is the tinny musak on repeat they have before your (delayed) flight takes off. No names, Jet2.com.

ATW have one that I have not heard from any other TOC. "Will customers please place litter in the bins provided on trains and stations". Tjhis is somewhat frustating when you hear it on approaching Cardiff Central - there are no bins there. A prime example of telling the terrorists you've got us worried. If a terrorist wanted to set off a bomb on a station they would find somewhere, bins or no bins. Bristol Temple Meads is still binless.
A couple of years agi, I was travelling back from West Wales to Cardiff on a Saturday when due to Engineering work taking place, buses were operating between Newport and Hereford. The on board system announced the train as a train to Newport but no mention of having to change to a bus for forward travel towards Manchester. This is the sort of thing passengers WANT to hear and of use to them. ATW assume that all passengers have checked their service through Journey Planner/Ticket purchse etc.
I understand Crewe station is another one where ATW tell you to put litter in bins on approach. None to be found.

Its a standard announcement, it will play at every station!

Maybe somebody could list all the stations with no bins and only one bin, after all it does say bins (plural) at which the announcement is wrong.

They should not announce it at any stations where they dont exist. Bottom line.
I haven't heard yet of any other TOCs following FGWs lead yet in reducing the "tosh" announcements.

The wife of a friend has given up travelling on the Marches route now, partly due to the long announcements. The one I'm particularly thinking of is the listing of all principle stations between Milford Haven and Manchester followed by a list of the request stops. Once this has finished, we get "This is a security announcement blah.blah, blah" She just can't relax through all this noise aggravated by the frequency of announcements. On Scotrail all you get is the station you are arriving at and the next calling station, together with the destination of course.

Or just 'destination' would suffice.
Virgin Guard on Monday told us that Manchester Piccadilly would be our 'Final destination stop'!

"Our next station stop" is another one. Why not just "our next station". If we weren't stopping it would not get a mention.

And another bugbear of mine "we are arriving into London Euston" surely we are arriving "at London Euston" Do TMs get told they have to use this tortured English?

Bath Spa station yesterday, all in the space of two minutes:

"The next train to depart from Platform 1 is the 1336 First Great Western service to Cardiff Central calling at Bristol Temple Meads, Filton Abbey Wood, Newport and Cardiff Central"

"The next train to depart from Platform 1 is the 1336 First Great Western service to Cardiff Central calling at Bristol Temple Meads, Filton Abbey Wood, Newport and Cardiff Central. This is the train from...Portsmouth Harbour"

"The train now arriving at Platform 1 is the 1336 First Great Western service to Cardiff Central calling at Bristol Temple Meads, Filton Abbey Wood, Newport and Cardiff Central"

Safe to say I don't think anyone was in any doubt about the destination and calling points of the 1336 to Cardiff Central *sigh*

As there was already a thread on announcements running with a near identical theme I have merged the two threads together.

Ten years ago, Bath Spa would have continued with: "The train now standing at Platform 1 . . ." when it hadn't arrived. Have they fixed this?

We could get into a semantic debate about signal stops, pathing stops, water stops and so on. I do see what you're getting at, though, it's a bit pointless.

The TM on a train I was on last night said "we will now be calling forward to Didcot Parkway, Reading, and London Paddington". Calling forward??

I don't remember noticing it, though I must say on this occasion I did have to jump up and grab all my belongings and bike to run to the train as it was early. I did also shut off a bit from the announcements after a while, considering the non-stop jibber we'd had in 2 minutes.

New announcements (all to be done in a Yorkshire accent):
- On boarding: "You're on a train to X, siddown and shudup"
- On arrival at terminating station "We're 'ere, bugger off"
- In case of disruption "It's all gone tits up, god knows when we'll get there"

No other announcements to be made, under any circumstances.

Do these meet everybody's approval?:lol::lol:

Brilliant   . Not sure about the "siddown" if the train is packed though! Might lead to rioting, or alternatively people making new friends by sitting on eachothers' laps!

You have listed the standard FGW announcement, where each train is announced three times before it arrives, although I didn't think the calling points were given on the second announcement. Depending on the station, the first announcement can be a good 3-4 minutes before the train arrives, so if I am in a waiting room, I wait until the 2nd or 3rd announcement until I go on to the platform.

I prefer the Greater Anglia announcements where the train is announced once just before the train arrives at the platform, but I see why multiple announcements could be useful.
