Just be thankful you don't have to travel on the new Arriva buses from Wrexham to Chester. All stops announced as "arriving at xxx next stop yyy" and on departure ""next stop zzz". All in English and Welsh. As the stops are so close together it's practically non-stop announcements for 45 minutes!

He reads them out wrong though. It wasn't a sic quote because I couldn't remember it. It's "Mauldeth Road" not "Mauldeth" and "Alderley Edge" not just "Alderley" ! Where else do you get that? It also omits the time, the Via point, the TOC...

FGW guards seem to have cut back on the level of announcements in the last month or so. Unfortunately the customer hosts tend to take up the slack.

Both have different scripts, CH's keep getting told to sell the cafe.

Not a big deal. I never include the train operator in announcements, I usually state the departure time but its not a big deal-if the train goes where people want it to then the departure time doesn't matter-everyone can look at a clock/watch! I rarely announce the departure time at moorgate for example-I often just say 'this train calls at all stations to Welwyn' before departing. Can't see an issue with it-the exact stops are on the platform screens and on board maps!

I suppose you think its OK to just put 'Victoria' or 'Waterloo' on the departure board then too? I mean fair enough if you do, you've got a point, but...

What's wrong with just Victoria or Waterloo?

When I drove on southern I often said 'this train is for Victoria'. No point saying London Victoria is there? I doubt anyone getting on a train at dorking, Croydon, Brighton, oxted etc is honestly going to get confused and wonder if they at going to London, Southend or Manchester...

Now I never say 'London kings x/London moorgate', no point, everyone knows the train is for the kings x or moorgate in London.

Now I never say 'London kings x/London moorgate', no point, everyone knows the train is for the kings x or moorgate in London.

Well it is 'wrong' even if it does 'help' passengers in the short term. Especially in the case of London Waterloo - it absolutely must be called that in a national application. Perhaps I take objection to the practice because if it were widely used it would lead to the Victoria being the London one... the others would still have to be referred to as "Manchester Victoria" ect. Perhaps that can't be helped anyway.

But, there's no point arguing, so we shall agree to disagree

Ok, you may be reading too much into this! I don't think many other people bat an eyelid about abbreviating stations or leaving out the city especially local or commuter journies! Even intercity tocs often say just kings x or euston.

If you catch a train from Leeds to Victoria there is little doubt which city you will end up in. Same if you catch a Victoria train from Kent or Surrey and if you catch a train to Waterloo from Woking you wouldn't imagine from a second that you would end up in Liverpool, same that a train going via Waterloo from southport certainly won't be running through London!
