On an FGW HST though its always in the same place unless something is wrong, in which case you'd probably still get an announcement.

There's a sufficient amount of HSTs reverse-formed to make it an issue, I think.

What annoys me is the amount of announcements at Luton Airport PW about not using the escalators if you have luggage. What's special about the escalators at Luton Airport PW? Just about every other station is happy for you to use theirs.

I think Rotherham Central (probably many others) was a bad one on the departure board; from memory I think it had six screens that it ran through constantly.

I know it was almost certainly the same timing for each screen but to me it seemed like the next train information with the stations called at seemed to change in a matter of seconds whilst the "Buy your tickets online at northernrail.co.uk" seemed to take an eternity to move on!

If there are alternatives such as lifts, these should be used with bulky or heavy luggage. The number of accidents I've seen on escalators where bags have fallen into someone, or the weight of them pulled someone over is remarkable.

Exactly! Perhaps the TOCs should publish the monthly passenger accident summaries. The ones I used to read, for every one that could be pinpointed to something such as a defective bit of kit or loose floor tile etc there was about 10 purely down to running on stairs, trying to juggle umpteen heavy bags and a pushchair/small brood/annoying dog whilst negotiating the escalators etc etc

At my old station, they actually had to walk past the lift to get to the stairs!!

Surfaces may be slippery
Take care on the stairs
Use the lift if you have a lot of luggage

When you came back your bags had been removed and destroyed. Far fetched, perhaps, but working on the railway you do see it all the time. Gatwick airport, people dragging suitcases up the stairs, when there is a lift just 50meters away.

If we lived in a society where one accepted the consequences of ones dimwittery, rather than looking upon it as an opportunity to prise some compensatory advantage from someone else for not reminding one to not be a dimwit, we would perhaps need many fewer instances of people being told not to be dimwits.

I have every sympathy!

I've often done the "overnight shift", having come into MAN after a night out, waiting for the first train to Preston. I could easily mouth along with them by the end of it!

24hr CCTV in operation - IIRC its a requirement by law to inform the public they are under surveillance (signs or announcements)
Keep luggage with you, unattended luggage may be removed by the police unattended bags cause security alerts and therefore delays to your journey, there are still terrorists out there you know.

I congratulate all those who feel the need for minimal announcements and signage and are capable of negotiating the rail network with minimal or no assistance, I wish there were more like you, unfortunately like most places, we have to pander to the lowest common denominator - the passenger who is clueless or will take the p!ss because "nobody told them!"

Many thanks to the New St announcer for helpfully informing me that surfaces may be slippery because of the adverse weather conditions. I hadn't even considered that a bit of snow might make it a little treacherous underfoot. FFS!!!!!!!

I have had that at Clapham Junction. A lady was trying to lift her buggy down the stairs and asked for my help. I pointed out I cannot help you but there is a lift behind you :roll:

It's quite a small lift though, to be fair.

Of course, common sense should tell people whether their bag is too big to safely take up an escalator or not. Not everyone travels with hugely bulky or heavy bags so the announcements could cause quite a queue for the lifts!

Another problem with people taking large bags won't just be them tipping, but the way people seem stop without warning - including right at the top or bottom of an escalator, with people then piling into them as they can't possibly avoid them.

That happens a lot at King's Cross, which makes me think the ban should be on passengers not luggage!

front 4 splits at haywards heath and goes to littlehampton
rear 8 heads to eastbourne
at eastbourne the front 4 are detatched and wait at eastbourne, but the rear 4 head off to bexhill and ore

Last week had a trip to the lakes. After every station we called at we had the "loop" of taped announcements including the security "please don't leave any unnattended blah blah blah". At the last stop the guard came on "Sorry to add yet another announcement...."

Can't the taped loop be shortened and speeded up, and cut out all the unncecessary stuff; all we need is "the final destination is XXX and the next station is XXX". Do we NEED anything else??
