Hi folks,

I have booked several Advance tickets through Trainsplit, all set for TOD collection from Oxford, for a journey from Bath Spa to Leeds tomorrow evening, from Leeds to Thirsk on Sunday morning, and from Thirsk to Bracknell in the small hours of Monday morning. I was planning to collect these tickets from Oxford tomorrow morning before purchasing a ticket to Bath Spa and departing at 10:07 train.

I discovered a few minutes ago that I've left my physical debit card in Devon, with no realistic probability of getting it to Oxford in time to collect the tickets. Other threads advise calling Trainsplit (viz. the retailer from which I bought the tickets), but this seems fruitless given that I would need to be able to collect the tickets by 10:00 AM tomorrow, or at the latest before departure from Bath Spa at 18:57.

I do have Samsung Pay (contactless) connected to the card on my phone and at Exeter St Davids I was once able to collect TOD at the ticket office window with this. I also have photo ID. However, I can't recall ever seeing Oxford ticket office open, although the GWR website claims it is open from 7:30 to 20:00.

I might be able to get to Oxford Parkway station instead in the morning, if that helps at all?

Do I have any realistic options here, or am I screwed?

Contact Raileasy customer services and tell them your issue to see if they can change to any card collection. They might even see this here.

They are unlikely to do this before you leave Oxford tomorrow, but you can collect them elsewhere.

When did you purchase the tickets?

I purchased the Thirsk to Bracknell tickets on 20 November and the Bath Spa to Leeds and Leeds to Thirsk tickets on 24 November, three separate reference numbers. Which I think is within Book with Confidence, if that's the implied question? - although of course rebooking would be more expensive so is less preferable than finding an alternative means to access the original tickets.

I purchased the Thirsk to Bracknell tickets on 20 November

This booking is already "Any card collect".

the Bath Spa to Leeds

This booking is already "Any card collect"

Leeds to Thirsk tickets on 24 November

This booking is already "Any card collect"

If you have access to any other debit/credit card, it should work the machine for these bookings.

Alternatively, according to the iKB, the tickets should be issued even in the absence of any credit/debit card with photographic ID:

If the ToD seller has set the CTR reference to permit collection using any payment card (Flag 3) then recall the booking with a different payment card (where no payment card is presented but the seller has set the collection to ‘any card’ collection (Flag 3) then subject to photographic identity confirming the name of the customer (e.g. driving licence or similar id as determined by the issuing office owning TOC) the tickets may be issued.)

I believe Trainsplit changed to allow all bookings to be ‘Any Card’ collection a while earlier than that. However, DM the poster above and you will get this resolved without guesswork.

I had this issue where my chase card used a virtual card - at the ticket office in Birmingham they just printed off the tickets as soon as I showed the confirmation email.
Also, just to note that I've found Oxford ticket office to be pretty good, occasionally they shut early but otherwise they've always been open when I've needed it (obviously during opening hours), so I would expect that if the collection doesn't work the ticket office will be open at Oxford and you'll be able to collect from there

There have been a couple of threads about Chase cards and the bank themselves cover it. Use the physical card number (available in the app) when buying tickets and then you won’t have problems collecting.

Yeah I was lucky in that the train manager allowed me to travel and then collect the tickets at my destination (in fairness the ticket I couldn't get was just a Banbury to Leamington portion of an Oxford to Birmingham journey so there was clear evidence that I intended to buy a ticket for the journey since I already had most of it) - I'm gonna stick to mobile tickets or using my other cards for collection

Trainsplit allows any card collection, so I would assume there would be no issue there.

Also be careful with mobile tickets (m-tickets) as these are not the same as e-tickets and are not anywhere near as good as e-tickets; other threads cover that, so I won't go into that here. Again you will be safe using Trainsplit as it only issues e-tickets (or any card TOD) and not m-tickets.

Or just use the physical card number for the chase card - full details can be found in their app - then you can use any retailer you choose.

Yeah, I've started using trainpal so that I can take advantage of the vouchers that they offer, and I have always collected physical tickets but I think i might switch to e-tickets (or whichever one it is that just gives you a barcode on the app) since then you can skip any potential queues at ticket machines

I had my card stopped and replaced and LNER twitter steadfastly refused to transfer collection to another card or to a station and would only issue an e-voucher refund for the existing ticket meaning I had to purchase new tickets which were more than twice the price. Given these were advance tickets that couldn't be issued as e-tickets due to the tube bit, I had no choice but to get paper tickets and their refusal to switch collection to another card was very poor customer service in my view :(

LNER do not have the ability to change the collection method for self service collection. However, they should have advised you to go to an LNER ticket office where collection could have been completed and I find it disappointing that it got as far as a refund being processed without them seeing that, especially as the social media team would have had to pass it on for that to happen.

Tbe number in the Chase app is a virtual number. The number on the microchip of the card is the physical number

What does the app tell you about purchasing/collecting tickets?
It tells you what the physical number is once you've used it on TfL so you can use that to get your journey history.

The number in the app can be changed; the number on the microchip cannot

So it is possible to access the number of the physical card and it can then be used to make purchases.

I asked if there was any other option at all rather than a refund and was told no and so agreed to a refund at that point which was done instantly but still very frustrating. The twitter team may have assumed as the ticket was from the South West to East Anglia that the switch at an LNER station wouldn't have been possible but actually it would have been for me but they weren't to know that and I can understand that assumption being made.
