Hi all,

I think I may already know the answer to this but I thought I'd throw it out here anyway to confirm.

I have purchased an Advance ticket which consists of two legs. The Mandatory Reservation Coupon only mentions the first leg of the journey (with start and end station, and specific time), not the second leg (only the main ticket mentions the final destination).

Is there any flexibility with regards to what time I catch the second train or is it necessary for me to very next train that arrives?

Advance tickets normally come with seat reservations and both tickets will need to be presented to the ticket inspector. If the leg does not have a seat reservation and the travel ticket is NOT marked booked train only then you should be OK. Check to make sure both tickets are not booked trains only, if one ticket has no specified train mentioned then should be fine to catch the next train on the permitted route.

A non-reservable leg of a journey (on an Advance ticket) may be made by any train that is not reservable, provided it can be produced on a 'valid travel itinerary'. In reality, provided it is not unreasonable, you should be able to use any non-reservable service. There is one known exception, Kings Cross to Stevenage (and vice-versa) can use appropriate East Coast services.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'll provide details of the journey so as to provide a better picture.

The main ticket says: from Cambridge [CBG] to London Terminals, AP GRT ANG ONLY, BOOKDTRAINONLY
The reservation coupon says: From CBG to Cheshunt [CHN], valid at 16:21 hours on XX-XXX-XX

When I booked my ticket online, I specifically mentioned that I wish to travel via Theobalds Grove, hence two legs rather than a direct train to the final destination.

For the first leg of the journey, obviously I have no choice but to catch the exact train mentioned on the reservation coupon. This leg terminates at CHN at 17:18.

For the second leg of the journey, obviously there are a number of trains I could take from CHN; each one leaving at 10 and 40 minutes past every hour. Since I will arrive at CHN at 17:18, is it necessary for me to catch the 17:40 train (i.e. the very next available train), or can I wait a bit and catch the 18:10 or even the 18:40 one instead? If I am allowed to delay, how long am I allowed to delay for?

Please don;t use three letter codes unless you have already established what the stations are. It makes things difficult for those who don't know all of the codes.

You may take "appropriate" trains. You are not allowed to "break" your journey.

You may have some difficulty explaining why you remained at Cheshunt station and let several trains at Cheshunt go. What would you say?

On an Advance ticket you're not allowed to break your journey, so while you could "wait a bit" you'd have to wait within the station, you can't leave the station premises and then come back to resume your journey later.

Fell asleep? Got enthralled in the latest blockbuster novel?

Thanks for the responses, guys :) I guess it falls under "inappropriate", then.
