The fact that at Earl's Court, the destination of the next train is often not displayed until it is in the platform! Surely it's about time they installed standard LED indicators? It would give you at least some idea when the next train to, say, Edgware Road will be. And it would also allow for some flexibility in destinations e.g. trains to Embankment during engineering works are indicated as Tower Hill.

I'll add a couple of other transport related ones:
Guided busways

Forever changing political conditions meaning that it is nigh on possible to get a rail project off the ground, or to actually see a major rolling stock order fulfilled.

Yes, indeed they do, but the accepted practice is that the righthand lanes are for overtaking, if a vehicle is travelling at a speed lower than others on the road then it is advised that the left hand lane is used when not overtaking; otherwise, two lanes of traffic will be slowed down. As far as I know it is generally referred to as the "slow lane", irrelevant of the speed limit.

Lane 1 is the "normal driving lane" other lanes are "overtaking lanes" the term "slow lane" doesn't really help here as it gives people the impression that if they don't want to go slow they can just sit in lane 2 or even lane 3 when these lanes should only be used for overtaking.

That sounds a better way of phrasing it: I and many other people I know have just always used the colloquial term "slow lane" for the left hand lane of the motorway, as it commonly is slower. If I have to be politically correct with naming motorway lanes, something's gone wrong!
And yes, sitting in lane 2 or 3 is what we're trying to avoid here!

There does seem to be a lack of knowledge with some people, earlier this year I was on the M4 as a passenger and the driver said to me that as it was a motorway they were allowed to just sit in lane 2.

But I'll except the local comment that the name should be Stroke City (Derry/Londonderry or Londonderry/Derry).

What I was getting at was the problem where there is an empty Lane 1, somebody sitting in Lane 2 at 60mph and a queue of cars trying to get past in Lane 3. However, that's not as annoying as someone driving on a clear A-road at 40mph. Especially as they drift towards the middle of the road, making it impossible to see past them to overtake.

Buy a coffee and move the car over to the back of the carpark.
Few minutes shut eye.
Open your eyes to see somebody parked right beside you.

I know what you mean. I was over there in June, and they always seem to ignore the big, hilly bit just above England on the map. I retaliated by calling the entire country "Texas" a couple of times (in Massachusetts) and that got the message accross.

When people think that if other franchise (XC) ran a certain route (Liverpool - norwich) that they would use different stock (Voyagers)

lol, not sure why people get so upset when I DARE to suggest Liverpool is not in the East Midlands (which ofcourse it is not :roll, & that being both ends of the country, it could be a XC service!?

Ofcourse, XC couldn't really stretch to that with no new trains. But still, I'm at a loss as why you'd be offended by a Voyager running the route?

lol, not just you it gets suggested quite often, and it is pointless as it would slow it down and mean more cancellations etc if it was ran by XC. It would also mean the route is more overcrowded

And a voyager is completely unnecessary anyway

Running for a fast(er) train. Getting held up at signals just outside of the starting station meaning you missed your connection and the slow train would have got you there faster. =/

The inane automated announcements on trains and stations these days that apparently TOCs are required to play due to some EU directive.

For instance 'Please do not leave your luggage unattended anywhere on this station. Luggage left unattended may be removed, damaged or destroyed by the security services'. By 'security services' do they mean the Spanish Inquisition? The mind boggles.

On most FGW DMUs there are announcements exhorting us to look at the 'safety information displayed on posters' and before leaving the train to 'check for all your personal belongings before leaving the train and please mind the gap between the train and the platform edge'. Fine, but we don't need an electronic voice nannying us.

When the baby is screaming so loud and the mother just sits there and does nothing to try and comfort it or whatever.

I think it's worse when you get the parent swearing at the child and going mental to make it shut up.

Also, when the parents threaten to smack their child - what good does that do? Really annoying, and saddening too

If the rest of the train was pretty much full and the only place that the family could sit together was in the quiet coach can they then sit there or would you expect them to split up or if there are no seats anywhere else then they should stand to preserve the sanctity of the quiet coach?
