As much as I'd like new stock for the line, just got to remember that this is just fantasy at the moment, its still not drfinate that Leeds to York VIA Garforth is being electrified yet

Surely for £290m more than Manchester-Leeds will be done! Unless were getting solid Gold contact wires!!

£8.8 million for the 500 metres of curve at Todmorden? Comparatively the electrification of the TPE North route is a bargain (including tunnels etc)

As I've said before, its bound to be extended to York/Hull etc, but only announced later - have no fear

This tendency for the north being seen as the retirement home for the former NSE area to pension off its' over the hill EMUs to (That's excluding 319s and the like because they still have a good few usable years in them at this point in time) has got to stop.

So long as fares remain relatively lower in the north than the south-east, so it will remain harder to make a positive business case for new stock a lot of the time. Thats just how it is - no one wants second or third hand stock but it has to go somewhere.

Well it could go for scrap but I think it will be coming north. As you say fairs seem to be lower in the north and I think that most people will see low fairs as important.

If they are getting newer faster trains at a reasonable price no one much will car if they are nor exactly new..

This isn't quite right. Every part of the country is entitled to a bite of the cherry as taxpayers.
"The North" has new 175s/185s/Voyagers/Pendos as well as old Pacers.

Fares are also low in Strathclyde but it hasn't stopped them getting a load of brand new 380s. Ditto West Mids and 350s.
Second hand 319s will also go to Thames Valley where the residents are exceedingly rich.

The "cheap" rail fares argument needs to remember that it only really affects PTE areas, where the PTE is making up the difference to the TOC. Non-PTE fares in "the North" are fairly similar to non-London fares in "the South".

By the same token bus/train fares in London are very cheap, yet they tend to get new vehicles fairly often.

I am sure that I heard (but cannot remember where or when) that certain PTE are looking to increase fares in parts of the North to help towards the costs of rolling stock and also towards part of the improvements of the Northern Hub. Can anyone shed any light on this and which PTE are considering this action.

I use the Leeds-Manchester section quite a lot and am always struck by how slow the trains seem to travel. On one off peak occasion however wee seemed to belt along. Are trains slow because the line is just full or is it the state of the track or are they in fact traveling at an appropriate sped and its just me.
:)

Mostly delays caused by the local services. For example, the Manchester - Hull services are usually delayed by the Manchester Victoria - Huddersfield locals. There are also fairly low speeds limits at /near Guide Bridge, Stalybridge, East end of Standedge Tunnel, etc. plus 60 mph at Diggle.
