I've had some decent runs with 68s, funnily enough both of them on 68010

It was great to catch up with you again good sir, hopefully by next time I'll have had the earwax all cleared out so I can hear better!

Jealous of the new shacks, but I currently plan to get that rectified on Monday. Same for 68012 all being well! ;)

As always an excellent read, and I look forward to the full story from your recent bashes. Certainly they sounded promising from the texts, and I know your very most recent one will be a good one!

<( I wonder how long it'll be before I get 68010 again? It's on 306.25 miles at the moment so to get it up to my current average (375.22) would be pretty good. And easy ;)

29th January – A SPT Weekender Day 1

A long weekend was planned in the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport land, mainly in Glasgow, and unlike previous Glasgow day-trips this time I had a plan, when I was buying tickets an advance fare for Euston to Glasgow was £4 cheaper than the “saver half” fare, so I decided to go for the slightly more expensive flexible off-peak single, which allowed me to go up via the East Coast due to the West Coast being cut-off. However things didn’t go as planned due to the latest storm, my original idea was to catch the 11:30 Euston – Glasgow service.

Due to the £15 offer SWT are doing at the moment, my first move was onto the 08:59 service, as usual a busy service, formed this morning of 159017 & 159001 for the nice trip to the city, usual hanging around outside Waterloo but a right time arrival, first job was to swing via Sainsburys outside the station to pick up something to munch on and a newspaper before heading to the Bakerloo line platforms, with required sets 3567 & 3239 took me forward to Oxford Circus, with dud Victoria line sets 11054/053 for the extra mile and a half to Kings Cross St Pancras. It was a quick walk up to Kings Cross which was in a state of mild chaos with cancellations & delays floating around, caused by the issues in the northern end of the line, so a few set swaps, but the first departure was the slightly delayed Grand Central service towards Bradford, which was formed of required 180112, and with the GC 180s being a slight pain to normally get I jumped on board for the nice run to Doncaster.

At Doncaster I had 40-odd minutes to kill before the next York bound service appeared, so I killed the time by having a quick walk to the town centre before heading back to the station, option 1 was a York terminator which would have connected with a XC service if it had been on time, but it was running around 10 minutes late and was a HST with dud power-cars, so I waited for the 11:30 Edinburgh service from Kings Cross, and in rolled dud 91117 with DVT 82205 bring up the rear. I was tempted to bail at York/Darlington to see what was on the 12:00 departure (which would have gone to Inverness), but as I got a table seat in coach H (the one with no power-sockets next to the food bar), I decided to stay on (needless to say when I saw the Chiefian later in the day it had a required 43 on the rear). Busy-ish service, but all was well until Newcastle, where we managed to regain some of the delay time to depart 2 minutes down. This is where things went a bit wrong as we came to a stop alongside the training pitch of Newcastle Football Club for a good 30 minutes to allow a pacer to pass as it was single line running for a short while, the train was rocking in the wind.

Crossing over to the up line for a good 10 minutes passing Cramlington and going back over to the down line to pause at Alnmouth, where I was tempted to bail to wait for the XC behind (good thing I didn’t as it looked like that XC had got caught waiting for the single line section to clear), a short distance longer going at a reduced speed, we came to another stop for some more single line running, north of Chathill & south of Berwick, this time I spotted some damage to the wires (wouldn’t it made more sense to send that HST which terminated at York up to Edinburgh instead of this 91 due to the wiring issues?), but eventually we crossed back over to the down line and crossed into Scotland and had an uneventful run into Edinburgh arriving around 54 minutes late at around 17:10, which got me thinking that either I could dash to try and grab the 17:15 departure to Glasgow Queen Street, or grab the 17:30 from Haymarket with some cat thrash through the tunnel on the 17:20 Fife circle loco hauled set.

Needless to say it was to platform 19 to await the empty coaching stock to arrive, and leading was required 68003, grabbing a seat in the MK2 coaches (seem a lot nicer now than the last time I did the Edinburgh Loco Hauled set) for the short run to Haymarket, with the loco making lots of lovely noise through the tunnels. That cheered me up as I crossed over to P4 to await the next Glasgow service, came up with “formed of 3 coaches”, and in rolled required 170414 (Borders Line), which was full and standing and running fast to Falkirk High, where I decided to bail to score the shack and get some fresh air. 19 minutes later, duds 170403 & 170472 rolled in to take me on a nice non-stop run to Glasgow Queen Street, and as this pair called at the stations before Falkirk it was emptier than 414, so I managed to get a seat.

The first order of duty was to check into my hostel, dump some weight from the bag and purchase a roundabout for today and a daytripper ticket for tomorrow, so it was off for a quick walk to check in, and I was back at Queen Street within 25 minutes to purchase my tickets and head to see what was one of the units heading to Anniesland, and in rolled winner 156506, so grabbing a nice seat for the local stopper to Kelvindale, a basic platform next to the canal, and it wasn’t long before 156506 returned from Anniesland bay platform to take me to Possilpark & Parkhouse, another basic station in the suburbs. I didn’t have long before the other unit on Anniesland stopper duties rolled in, winner 156476 to take me to Maryhill, before 10 minutes later returning to take me the 60 chains to Gilshochill. Short by rail, but not by road, otherwise I would have walked the 28 chains to the intermediate station, instead I waited as 156506 popped back up to take me to Summerston, which has an Asda next to the station.

A little while later, that 156 had returned to take me to Ashfield, the passing point on this line, so it was either a 30 minute fester for 156506 to return to take me back to Anniesland or to wait for 156476 to take me to Queen Street, or have a short walk to Springburn, which started off well until I got around half-way and the heavens opened and it started to throw it down, and there wasn’t a lot of shelter, as at the time I was crossing over a busy dual carriageway. I arrived soaked to Springburn, to spot a required 334 heading towards Cumbernauld so something to note for later, as dud 320320 rolled in to reverse so it was on board to remove layers and try and get a bit dried out. This 320 took me to Duke Street, where the rain had ended, so it was a short walk up the road to Alexandra Parade to await 334014 to roll in to take me the short distance up the loop to Barnhill, as it started to rain again.

There isn’t much in the way of shelter at Barnhill, so it was a short of hiding underneath the little shelter offered to wait for required 318258 to roll in attached to dud 318262 to take me to High Street, after a 10 minute wait at Bellgrove, the original plan was to now shift to the four required shacks between Hyndland & Dalmuir, but as I was running around 90 minutes late, I decided to ditch that plan. Keeping an eye on that 334, I hung around for 20 minutes after a couple duds before 334027 rolled in to take me the 45 chains to Queen Street Low Level.

It was a short walk to Buchanan Street subway station to await a Subway service formed of 103/129/106 (all would be winners as this was the first time I recorded numbers from the subway units) to take me to Bridge Street, followed by 118/202/119 to West Street & 117/128/130 to Shields Road, all 3 were nice island platforms, and wasn’t long before 102/203/131 rolled in to take me to St Enoch for a short walk to the hostel room to get warmed up.

4 more subway stations done, plus the clearance of the Maryhill loop & Springburn loop, which I would imagine would be reduced to an hourly service when the Queen Street tunnel closes due to diversions, plus as my journey to Glasgow was delayed by 72 minutes (the 17:30 to Queen Street arrived 8 minutes down), I should get all the money back from Virgin East Coast so a bright side to the delays.

30th January – A SPT weekender day 2

It was a rather early start to head to catch the second service heading west from Glasgow Queen Street (ignoring the early morning Oban service), my aim was to try and clear shacks to the north west of Queen Street, with my original plan taking me onto the West Highland line for a couple shacks, however due to the weather I ditched those shacks. Anyhow it was a nice early morning walk to Queen Street, my coat had dried out but sadly my hat was still a bit wet, my first move would be on the sleeper to Dumbarton Central (as the Fort William sleeper turns into a regular passenger service after Glasgow), and in rolled dud 67007, carrying a mix-bag of Mk2 coaches (A former Virgin lounge & an Arriva coloured seated carriage), nice enough start to the day with some good noise from the tunnel.

To Dumbarton Central, where it was slightly cold with the wind, and I jumped onto duds 334004/334026 for the short hop to Dumbarton East and across the island to await dud 334039 to take me to Alexandria on the Balloch line, a basic station, and was a short wait in the snow before 334039 had returned to take me back to Dumbarton Central, and across to the other platform for dud 334033 to take me to Helensburgh Central. It was a nice short walk in the snow, up the hill to reach the other station in Helensburgh, Helensburgh Upper and a short wait before dud 156465 rolled in from Oban to take me to Cardross, the only time a 156 calls at Cardross (and strangely this service also calls at Maryhill & Possilpark & Parkhouse). Cardross is the crossing point on the Helensburgh Central bound services so normally a 30 minute wait (my original plan was to have a 10 minute fester here to wait for the 156 to take me back to Dumbarton with a very tight +3 onto a Balloch service to grab Renton before heading out west with some 30 minute festers).

Anyhow it wasn’t long before dud 334031 rolled in to take me to Craigendoran, which is a single line platform pretty much on the bank of the Firth of Clyde, and it was very stormy, hail-stones, wind, I was in the little bus shelter (thankfully the entrance is away from the river) and it was quite hairy with the hail building on the sides and coming through a gap in the roof. Thankfully it wasn’t long before 334031 returned to take me back to Dumbarton Central to transfer onto dud 334027 back up towards Balloch to Renton. A very basic station at Renton, the former station building being used to house a “Robert the Bruce” museum, so I stayed underneath the bike shelter out of the wind (as my hat wasn’t proving to be much cop against the wind).

334027 had returned to take me back to Dalmuir, where a platform interchange to the platforms on the Yoker lines saw me climbing onto dud 320317 working a stopper to Cyldebank, where I had 15 minutes to kill so I decided to head to a nearby shopping place in search of a new hat which would keep my head warm (plus some food as it was getting on a bit and I was getting hungry). Nice little indoor market and a large shopping centre, but I saw a charity shop and purchased a nice hat (which had parts to cover my ears), and via Greggs for a nice sausage roll (& lunch for later). Back to the station and dud 334039 took me forward to Garscadden which is a nice island platform and it was to Yoker (passing the depot) on 334015 for a quick miles grab. Next up was dud 318252 to take me to Scotstounhill which is a footbridge shack, and across the other platform to score my first new unit of the day, in the shape of 318255 attached with 318257 back to Yoker,

I was expecting the return of 334015, but instead got dud 318267 to take me to the island platform at Hyndland, before heading back to Jordanhill on winner 320308. Over the footbridge and onto 318257 & 318255 back to Hyndland, where I mistakenly got onto dud 334028 back to Jordanhill, thinking it was required, but instead it was dud (had it a couple weeks ago from Haymarket), annoying because it meant I missed a Motherwell via Whiffet service and a required 334 heading towards Edinburgh. It was back to Hyndland on dud 320322 to keep an eye out for anything required, either heading towards Partick or to Anniesland. A couple duds later and winner 320302 rolled up to take me to Partick, where I had a bit of a rest before duds 320308 & 318269 took me to Carmyle, a passing point on the services towards Whiffet line (gives a +2), however as we were 4 minutes late departing Argyle Street, and it is a good 3 minutes to change platforms (long access paths to a road bridge) meant I had a 25 minute fester, so I read the newspaper and listened to some music via my ancient iPod.

25 minutes later dud 318254 (which annoyed Mr Techni as 254 is his last 318) to Kirkwood, which isn’t a nice place to hang around for long. Thankfully it wasn’t long before 318269 & 320308 returned from Whiffet to take me back to Mount Vernon, mild panic as one of the doors on the 318 had decided to go on strike (resulting in a slight adjustment by the driver, locking it out of use with a “out of order” sticker put onto it), which meant my +5 at Mount Vernon had been changed to a +2. But thankfully it was a footbridge between platforms, so no issues with connection as dud 320318 & required 318259 rolled in to take me to Bargeddie with a short wait before winner 318264 popped up to take me to the final shack along the Whiffet line at Baillieston.

Happy days I through as I waited for dud 318252 to roll in to take me down towards Motherwell (the services at Motherwell terminate, before restarting back towards Glasgow doing a large circle, i.e. 318252 would have worked a Hamilton circle service and a unit from the Hamilton circle would then work a Whiffet line stopper service, quite a clever way to avoid reversals. A late running XC brought it with a massive hail-storm which lasted a couple minutes but meant everything was white and covered with hail. But I was onto P1 awaiting the Lanark bound 320309 to take me to Wishaw, closely followed by Edinburgh bound dud 380112 to Carluke. Mainly a tight connection at Carluke for an Ayr bound dud 380113 to take me back to Wishaw as I had spotted a large Tesco next to the station, which was used as a supply raid. Back at Wishaw and the next Glasgow bound service was running late, departed Lanark 8 down, and arrived into Wishaw 13 down, which meant my +14 at Shieldmuir wouldn’t hold, and made worst as 320309 was held for extra time (and was due to terminate at Motherwell due to the delay) for a required 318 heading to Lanark to clear the single line connection between the main line & Wishaw, but eventually it got going and I scored Shieldmuir which appears to have a very long footbridge (I would estimate a good 5 minutes to get between platforms), and 10 minutes later dud 318265 rolled in to take me to Motherwell.

Connection times at Motherwell are rubbish, the half hourly service towards Hamilton departs at pretty much the same time as the half hourly service from Lanark rolls in, so faced with a 30 minute fester, I decided to go for a little sub mile walk to Airbles, a service towards Motherwell was dud, so it was to the other platform, and winner 320307 rolled in to take me to Blantyre. A short wait here at Blantyre and it was onto my 2nd last 320, 320316 down towards Larkhall, to alight at Merryton. A short wait later and 320316 had returned to take me to Chatelherault (and I hope I have spelt that right). Another short fester and dud 320302 (well if 320301 popped up I would have been amazed) rolled in for a miles grab down to Larkhall.

Staying on the same unit, it took me to Hamilton West, where I decided to change my plan to do Shotts and a couple shacks down towards Kilmarnock and go unit hunting instead. Dud 320303 & 318256 took me to Hamilton Central, where after a while duds 318259 & 320317 took me to Motherwell, where a quick transfer was taken onto dud 380106 to Bellshill. I could either catch a dud 156 towards Glasgow or wait to see what was on the next Lanark service, and I was in luck as winner 318250 rolled in to take me back to Motherwell, and dud 380101 heading to Ayr took me back to Glasgow Central, to do some PEP hunting.

I needed 314201 & 314216 to clear the 314s, and sitting on one of the platforms was 314216 which was due to work a Cathcart circle service, a quick check of RTT suggested no real connection could be made, so sitting in the motor coach I did a nice round circle and 31 minutes later I was back at Glasgow Central, keeping an eye out for any sightings of 314201. I fired up RTT to identify possible 314 operated services, sadly excluding the odd 314 which might escape from the city for a nice run to Port Glasgow, and picked up ones, so it was time to relax and watch various duds (and required 380s) coming and going, before I was down to potentially my last option, the other 314 working out to Paisley Canal, so it was over to P13 area to see and with a smile on my face I took a seat on 314201 for the ride out to Paisley Canal, and staying on board back into Glasgow Central. 314s cleared, so happy days, as I headed to the low level platform and caught 320317/318259 to Exhibition Centre, with dud 318262 back to Anderston and required 318253 to Partick.

This is where things went a tad wrong as I misread the timetable for the subway, as required 108-201-116 took me to Kelvinhall with duds 106-129-103 to Ibrox, little did I know that was the last service of the day as 121-123-105 took me to Govan to find out there was no more services (at 23:10, you would have through the subway would be open for longer during Friday/Saturday nights to cater for night-goers). Govan might only been a short distance from Partick, but there is a river in the way, and the bus station was being refurbished, so it was to Google Maps which firstly suggested a bus route which I couldn’t find anywhere, then a route 9 with a 15 minute walk to ‘Bellahouston Academy’, and a double decker route 9 took me back to the city centre, number 32588. Oops, but at least I’ve got 3 more subway stations out of the way.

Nice walk back to the hostel where I went straight to sleep, after a rather long day, with some pictures:

The Clydebank hat, nice and warm:

Just another PEP, 314201 at Glasgow Central.

31st January – A SPT Weekender Day 3[/b]

The idea of today was to clear some shacks on the Ayrshire coast line, and so it was to Glasgow Central after checking out of the hostel, with the first service towards Ardossan Harbour, and it was a good start of the day with required 380104 for the 31 mile and 50 chain peaceful (for I do enjoy the 380s for their comfort levels and fast acceleration) ride to Ardrossan Town, where due to the nature of the timetable for the Harbour branch which sees a handful of services to the harbour but only a couple away from the harbour (the units go back to Glasgow Central as ECS which does seem strange), I had a nice walk along the beach to Ardrossan South Beach.

20 minutes after waiting at South Beach, dud 380007 rolled in to take me to the level crossing shack at Stevenston with a quick cross over to the other platform, with dud 380022 rolling in on route to Largs to take me up the coast (which is a very nice trip) onto the single passenger line (and single freight line to the side for a short distance) to Fairlie, which was fairly basic. A short wait before 380022 returned from Largs to take me back along the line to Saltcoats, the station with brand new fancy digital information boards, and not a lot else. But it wasn’t long before fresh dud 380104 rolled in to take me to my final shack along this line to West Kilbride which is a nice peaceful market town.

The departure board at Saltcoats:

After a brief explore of the area (nothing much to report in terms of pubs), it was back to the station and onto 380104 for the 3rd time of the day to take me to Kilwinning, the junction station, and across the footbridges to reach platform 4 (with a random Mexican style hat down the embankment) to await the formed of 7 coaches services towards Ayr to roll in. Dud 380020 was leading dud 380111 for the nice run down the coast to Prestwick Town, a short connection here, but easiest made to winners 380016 & 380114 back up the line to Troon, another peaceful little picture postcard station, and dud 380112 arrived to take me to Prestwick International Airport, an airport which has seen better days (in terms of passenger numbers), the station is operated by the airport rather than Scotrail and to be honest is a bit of a dump, broken doors and moving staircases, but it wasn’t long before 380111/380020 returned from Ayr to take me back towards Glasgow. The original plan was to bail at Irvine to try and make a +2 onto a southbound service to grab Barassie, however I decided to leave those two shacks for another day as I looked at RTT to see that the Virgin services towards Carlisle were being cancelled due to a derailed engineering train.

Back to Glasgow Central and it seemed that the engineering train had been removed as the 13:30 had departed and the 14:30 was at the platform advertised, however it looked rammed, full and standing, and I wasn’t going to spend 2 and a bit hours standing on a Voyager, so decided to keep to my original plan to catch the 15:30, so with an hour or so to kill, it was to the Subway at St Enoch, with 115-101-111 taking me to Hillhead, where I would continue but it looks like the Sunday frequencies are not the best (every 12 minutes), so it was back to St Enoch on another trio of winners in the shape of 127-206-126. Walking to Argyle Street, it was dud 318256 which took me back to Central low level (supply raid at a shop to grab some pop), grabbing some food before boarding winner 221108 working the 15:30 service to Carlisle. Treating myself to weekend first, I settled back and enjoyed the trip, pausing a couple times on route, but arriving into platform 8 at Carlisle (new track for me), in time to cross over to P4 where dud 390115 was waiting with the 17:51 to London Euston.

A busy service, but I took a seat in 1st class (to catch up with my emails and with the forum using the free Wi-Fi) and all was going well, a few minutes late, but we slowed right down to pass Crewe and came to a stop just south of the station, opposite a refueling point, the train from Manchester which was ahead of us had broken down. 30 minutes later we got going again (after watching a Voyager pull into the fueling point to get given some diesel), however we were now 35 minutes and kept on losing time so eventually rolling into Euston 49 minutes late at 22:07. Bang went my connection with the 22:15, hello 23:35 ‘stopper’, so I made a mistake in deciding to try and grab a couple LU stops, logic would say the easiest way to get down to the northern line at Stockwell area would be to use the Victoria line, or even a service via Waterloo and change at Kennington. Nope in my hurry I went the long and slow way round, with required 51531 & 51556 taking me to Clapham South where I made my 2nd mistake, I should have bailed at Clapham Common as in the 5 minutes I was at Clapham South waiting for a northbound service, at least 2 more southbound services arrived, doh! Anyhow required 51662/51661 took me to Kennington and dudss 51658/51724 took me to Waterloo.

Grabbing a McDonalds from the station I headed up and spotted a required 458/5 working a Windsor service (Putney area was closed so all Reading/Windsor were going via Kingston loop), with dud 458523 leading winner 458518 (featuring 4/5s of collision damaged 458518 and 1/5 of fire damaged 458501) for a leap to Clapham Junction. A single 450 was working towards Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford (which looked busy), but the 23:35 ‘stopper’ (only 159 service to call at Farnborough & Fleet) was nice and quiet as it was a trio of units, with 159004 leading 159001 and with 159016 on the rear, with 159016 becoming the latest member of the 159 thousand mile club. Nice enough trip back, although with arriving at Grateley around 01:10 it wasn’t what I really wanted (instead of a 23:40 arrival from the 22:15). However it was a very good weekend, with a lot of the electrified shacks being cleared, with only 1 more 320 left to find and 3 more 318s (plus 4 more 334s).

I have no idea when I will next be back in Scotland, probably May time to try and grab the various curves being used by diverted trains due to the Queen Street closure

318254 may say hi but I shove specially selected fingers up at it!

You sure did well up there, despite the weather doing its worst to try and disrupt you. So many of those shacks are required, as well as the odd EMU in there. I really need a serious session in SPT Land! Ideally I'll be doing so in the summer when I go up for the rare track on offer during the Queen Street Tunnel closure.

Oh, and jammy git on 67007, one of just two 67s I need. That hat looks well warm and cosy, it has to be said!

As always, some excellent reading there, but I dread to think how long that took to type up!

Ah so that's what the legendary Kiteman looks like! Some more stellar progress there, and a good read (in a "War and Peace" way!) :)

Not so many winners for haulage (if you compare it to what I'd get) but loads of new shacks and it was an enjoyable read.

The remaining units (plus the new 320/4s) will be hunted down at Hyndland. I need everything between bellgrove & Edinburgh Park, but I believe that is being cut to 2 trains an hour during the queen street works.

That hat is out of this world! Puts the excellent read fully in context.

Going back on topic, all these Scottish bashes are epic reads and really whetting my appetite to get north of the border. The annual trip is in the planning stage at present; in fact there's a council of war at a local hostelry tonight to nail down the date. (The Scottish trip is normally done with a couple of mates who look at the world through camera lenses.)

3rd February – An evening gas factory bow

There is one little bit of single track which is unmarked in my atlas for London, the little bit of track between Gas Factory junction outside Limehouse to Bow Junction on the GEML outside Stratford, and it doesn’t seem to get used that often (as C2C services via Stratford use Liverpool Street), so when I heard the news that for this week the last train from Fenchurch Street was being diverted via Stratford, I sat back to double check it ran on both Monday and Tuesday nights before purchasing my tickets.

It was to Grateley for the 16:59 ‘school’ service (normally busy with school kids from various schools in Salisbury heading east), formed this evening of 159009 & 159016, which happens to push 159009 over the thousand mile mark to become member 16 (016 having joined the club last Sunday night), nice run towards Waterloo where we passed Clapham a good 5 or so minutes early so I was expecting the usual sitting outside Waterloo until 18:20 where we could roll in replacing a 450 bound for Guildford, where I was surprised we went pretty much straight in. I worked out I had probably 2 hours or so to kill before the 20:32 service from Fenchurch Street, and didn’t really want to use the Jubilee line (as it probably would have been busy), so it was a walk across the bridge to Waterloo East, RTT fired up with potential winners heading across the river to Charing Cross.

First two movements were pairs of dud 465s, but the 3rd was a service from Hastings, which meant 375s, and in rolled required 375613 attached with dud 375908, across the river and into platform 6, a trio of dud 375s were due to head out next, so I gave them a miss, and went for a short walk to Embankment underground station, with a pair of required D-stock sets rolled in, 7091 & 7036, which wasn’t that bad, until we got to Monument where it got a bit cosy, especially with a couple minute delay between stations caused by signal issues, but I alighted at Tower Hill and went for another short walk to Fenchurch Street.

First departure was a pair of dud 357s, so it was across to the other island platform to wait for the next service to roll in (as they don’t tend to hang about Fenchurch Street), and it was my first 357/3, in the shape of 357312 attached with dud 357203, so taking a seat on the former 357212, and it seems very different being 2+2 seating with a lot more airline style seats, I probably should have bailed at Limehouse, but stayed on to the island at West Ham with a 10 minute wait before the next inbound service, which was a pair of 357/3s which were dud as I had them previously as 357/2s (and as nothing has changed apart from the seating, I wasn’t hunting them down again). Next up was another 8-car, this time with dud 357219 leading required 357029, to Limehouse, where I would have a wait before the next service (after seeing a pair of required units heading out towards Grays, knowing they wouldn’t be back in time), next up was a dud unit heading east, so it was over to the Fenchurch Street platform as winner 357044 rolled in, so it was back to the smallest London terminal.

A short wait as 357044 departed back east as I worked out a plan as it was getting to the time where services were starting to be diverted towards Liverpool Street, so I didn’t have a lot of choice, as dud 357023 rolled in with required 357001 at the back, so taking my usual seat in a 357 (near the cab ends), I waited for 5 minutes before 001 departed with 023 in tow, back to Limehouse, and across the other platform to await the 2nd last service towards Fenchurch Street of the evening, and I wasn’t expecting much as my requirements slowly come down, but I was happy as dud 357009 came in with required 357025 in tow to take me back to Fenchurch Street (it’s an nice enough view overlooking that part of London), those two would depart on the 20:30 towards Southend, the set which would form the 20:34 came in, as the PIS said “Limehouse – Stratford – Barking – blah blah –Shoeburyness” and had required 357033 on the front (rear on arrival) and dud 357042 on the rear, so taking a seat in 033, we eventually set off leaving a closing Fenchurch Street & Limehouse behind as we beared left onto the single track crossing over the District line around Bow before a brief pause to cross over the up slow into the down slow arriving into Stratford a couple minutes down.

I had a couple options, the easiest would have been to head to get some 96 stock thrash around to Waterloo, instead I noticed on RTT a service from Norwich was running a tad late, and after a dud 321 (and spotting former London Midland 321417 heading towards the east attached with another 321, which must confuse passengers) departed towards Liverpool Street, required loco 90012 rolled in, with the former pretendolino coaches and dud DVT 82105 at the rear to take me back to Liverpool Street where I was going to dash to try and make the 21:20 from Waterloo (17 minutes to do it in, which probably would have been tight, but doable depending on the Waterloo & City line), however as we pulled into the West Anglia side of the station I spotted a particular 379, so I decided to ditch my plans to get home an hour later as I had a fast walk to jump onto my last 379 in the shape of 379009 which was leading dud 379006 for a 5 minute wait before it departed at 21:10 for the usual 6 mile trip to Tottenham Hale. A complete and utter surprise there, if I rolled in on the GEML side of the station I wouldn’t have even known 009 was sitting there.

Anyhow, to Tottenham Hale where the barriers were wide open and the PIS not working “please refer to timetable”, and across the footbridge to the other platform, with 2 options (the 3rd option was to cross back over for some Victoria line action), I didn’t need the 2nd option as in rolled required 317510 attached with dud 317649 for the short run down passing the Eurostar depot to Stratford, where a quick check of RTT highlighted 2 options before a 10 minute gap (which would have meant 96 stock time), but sadly the first option was required 321334 so it was on board the dusty bin for a trip to Liverpool Street, where it attached to two other 321s already in the platform (long walk to the gateline), and a short walk underground to the Central line platform, where the first service which rolled in was formed of all required 91063/92122/92208/91065 for the short hop to Bank, where it was a case of going up and over down the moving walkway to the Waterloo & City platforms, where sadly it was duds 65508/65507 to take me to Waterloo.

Nothing of interest floating around Waterloo, so it was onto a quite busy 159011 (seriously SWT a single unit at this time of night [22:20]) for the nice trip back to Grateley, a slight highlight being at Basingstoke where due to the platforms being slightly busy, we went into P4, not the first time I’ve gone into P4 from the Waterloo direction (previously had a late running XC sent into that platform from Reading), but the first time I believe I have departed P4 heading towards Salisbury, as soon as we departed Overton I heard a “oh sugar” being shouted by a passenger further up the coach who probably had slept through his required stop, and hence a probable taxi back to wherever they wanted to be. Anyhow a right time arrival back at Grateley, the end of a productive evening, bit of new track covered with a handful of required units.

------

And Quinn, guess which 68 is on the 17:21 Banbury Slammer? ;)

Many congratulations on clearing the 379s good sir!

The same applies to a certain Cat I believe ;)

An excellent read as always, that rare track I scored on a Buffer Puffer tour, 9.0 I believe. Wow that was ages ago!

A few more steps towards conquering the world!

5th February – A quick evening spin

With a forum meal being held in Wembley, I had the idea of getting the 68 hauled Banbury Commuter Set, the slam door set, and to get a decent-ish run from a cat. I was staying overnight and with weekend engineering works in the Salisbury area meaning buses from Andover (handy signalled crossover to the west of the station) I drove to Andover, and the 15:05 departure this afternoon was formed of 159017 & 159004 to take me on the nice run into Waterloo.

When we were waiting outside the station, I noticed a required 458/5 rolling in, so it was towards the Windsor line platforms, to grab 458517 attached with dud 458525 for the short hop to Vauxhall. When waiting for 517 to depart, I noticed another required 458 had rolled in as ECS and would depart 10 minutes afterwards, so making use of the 10 minutes fester at Vauxhall I purchased my BZ6 ticket from the ticket office before heading back up to the platforms as a pair of dud 450s rolled in heading to Reading. Quick platform change as dud 458502 rolled in with required 458514 in tow, for another tiny leap to Queenstown Road Battersea, making use of the island platform to do a +1 onto duds 450022 & 450042 back to Vauxhall.

To the underground, and the Victoria line wasn’t giving me anything this afternoon, first two sets were dud, and so keeping an eye on the time I jumped onto 11031/032 for the run to Oxford Circus, making use of the cross platform interchange with a short wait for the Bakerloo line, and in rolled a set formed of required 3565 attached with dud 3263 to take me to Marylebone, 13 minutes or so before departure (which makes a change for me), so I took it easy to head to the concourse, spotting the mix slam door coaches working the 17:21 towards Banbury, with my last silver 68 up front 68010 and required DVT 82302 at the back (I think I only need one more Chiltern DVT), so taking a seat in the leading coach, and meeting up with some others from the forum for a nice run to the first stop at Beaconsfield.

The sound of the 68 roaring away out of the tunnels at Marylebone was amazing, but once up to speed it soon quieten down, and looked like a couple members of staff jumped on at Beaconsfield, I’m guessing to help doing the slam doors at the other station calls. 15 minutes to kill at Beaconsfield before dud 165024 rolled in with required 165003 on the rear from High Wycombe to take us on a semi-fast back towards London, alighting at South Ruislip.

The plan for me was to try and get Ruislip Gardens in, but the Central line looked like it had collapsed as the platform display was suggesting 13 minutes until the next West Ruislip bound service, so that plan went out of the window and after 20 minutes dud 172102 rolled in to take us down to Wembley Stadium.

After the meal, I was going to head back to Wembley Stadium to Chiltern it down to central London, however that service was cancelled, so it was to Wembley Park with requires S8 21105/106 getting a good 4 and a half mile run to Finchley Road before transferring to duds 96055/96028 to London Bridge, with a choice between a busy looking 171 heading towards Crowborough, or a pair of dud 377s, the 377s won the day with 377118 & 377145 for the nice trip down to East Croydon, where my hotel for the evening was located.

Anyhow, here be 68010 getting ready to pull away at Beaconsfield:

And this picture might give you a clue where I was on Saturday, of which report should hopefully be done this week
;)

Thanks Quinn, but before I do my report for Paris (as it will probably be easier to write)...

7th February – London Underground Madness Part 1

I was meant to head to Leeds today purchasing £5 advances each way in the East Coast seat sale, but after a rubbish night on the Friday I wasn’t feeling 100%, and with the potential risk of another trip home on the 23:35 (40 minute connection between Kings Cross and Waterloo for the 22:15, but with my luck recently the service probably would have rolled in 25 or so minutes late), decided to ditch doing a spot of 180 hunting & Marsden bagging (will be a job for a Summer Saturday me thinks with my trusty bike along the canal), and do some LU shacks.

So with this in mind, I drove to Andover, eventually finding somewhere to dump my car and fast walked to the station to jump onto 159020 & 159010 working the 08:46 Andover to London Waterloo, which introduced 159010 to the 1000 mile club on the speedy run to Clapham Junction where I bailed and after purchasing a travelcard from the TVM headed back, as I had spotted a service bound for Hampton Court which had 2 required 456s on (A Sunday trio), and I worked out I could intercept it at Surbiton on the next Basingstoke/Alton service, after allowing a pair of dud 450s heading to Reading go, in rolled required 450097 attached with 450074, blimey an unexpected winner with only 3 of the 3rd rail Desiros to go. Nice enough run to Surbiton, pausing briefly at Wimbledon, and I alighted at the edge of zone 6 and crossed over to await what I was expecting to be a trio of 456s...

...but I didn’t read RTT correctly, as it seems there are 4 diagrams on the Hampton Court services, with an inbound working arriving just as another service departs, sitting at Hampton Court for 30 minutes, so in rolled dud 455737 attached with required 456003, another unexpected winner as I took a seat on the 456 for an all-station run to Wimbledon, crossing over with Tram 2560 sitting in the new platform (10b) at Wimbledon with a lot of media looking folk around, I could only imagine it was the launch event of the increased frequency for the Wimbledon branch, 2560 wearing a wrapping paper lively as seen below:

Anyhow, it was soon onto double duds 455919 & 455718 for another fast run back to Surbiton, before crossing over to await the return of the trio of 456s from Hampton Court, and in rolled dud 456014 followed by required 456011 & 456001, leaving me with only 2 of the mini-red-devils left to locate, so it was back to Wimbledon, the tram was tempting to get my remaining shacks, but that would probably be easier to attack going fast to East Croydon, so I turned my attention to the District line, and in summary my movements were (with 5 minute gap between services)

Wimbledon to Wimbledon Park – 7093 & 7022
Wimbledon Park to Southfields – 21359/360
Southfields to East Putney – 7103 & 7110
East Putney to Putney Bridge – 21417/418 (dud units)
Putney Bridge to Parsons Green – 21365/366
Parsons Green to Fulham Broadway – 21363/364
Fulham Broadway to Earls Court (not a new shack) – 7053/7020

It was then a transfer over the other platform and a bit of a fester for the next Richmond or Ealing Broadway bound service:
Earls Court to West Kensington – 7530/7105
West Kensington to Barons Court – 7030/7508
Barons Court to Hammersmith (not a new shack, and pretty much a cross platform leap between lines) – 201/230 (Piccadilly Line)

A brief break at Hammersmith to grab lunch from a nearby Tesco Metro before the District bashing resumed:
Hammersmith to Ravenscourt Park – 21357/358
Ravenscourt Park to Stamford Brook - 21391/392
Stamford Brook to Chiswick Park – 21480/479
Chiswick Park to Acton Town – 21304/303
Acton Town to Ealing Common - 21374/373
Which completed the western branches of the district line, and wasn’t long before a 10 minute frequency Piccadilly line service rolled in to keep me going upwards:
Ealing Common to North Ealing – 162 & (dud) 890
North Ealing to Park Royal – 124 & 237
Park Royal to Alperton – (dud) 145 & 120
Alperton to South Harrow – 106 & 251
South Harrow to Raynes Lane (where it terminated) – 179 & 192

Watching that Piccadilly line unit empty out before heading to the middle siding (does the driver change ends by walking through the entire train via the emergency end doors?), before continuing west on the metropolitan line:
Raynes Lane to Eastcote – Duds 21061/062
Eastcote to Ruislip Manor – 143 & 152
Ruislip Manor to Ickenham – 21107/108
Ickenham to Ruislip – 21007/008

And with Ruislip that is everything cleared on the metropolitan line, and with me thinking what to do I noticed in the 387 thread the diagram for 387201, and so I decided to attempt to intercept it, so it was onto 21021/022 for the long run down to Euston Square, where I decided I had time to play, so linear bashed with dud S7 21369/370 taking me to Kings Cross St Pancras before required 21103/104 to Farringdon, where it was a transfer to the Thameslink platform as a signal failure for westbound trains was taking hold with a S7 being held for a good 5 minutes, pretty soon the metropolitan line was cut back to Baker Street, anyhow the next service to Bedford was only formed of 4 coaches and in rolled a very red and shiny unit, 387201 which was pretty wedged inside. As for the differences between the future Gatwick Express units and the regular 387/1s, apart from red seats there isn’t any!

I bailed from the red machine at St Pancras and did some festering, a dud 319 was heading southbound, a dud 387 was working north on a Luton service (since when did 387s go round the Sutton loop on Sundays Keith?), a pair of dud 377s headed south, so I was going to jump on the next northbound service as when I was at Harrow in the Hill earlier with a driver change on 21021/022 I spotted a required Chiltern 165 heading towards Aylesbury Vale Parkway so my aim was to try and intercept it working back, so the quickest way was to grab the next Bedford to West Hampstead Thameslink and cross over to the Jubilee line, and in rolled dud 387105 leading winner 387102, woohoo only 4 more of the original 387/1s left, for a nice run to West Hampstead Thameslink, and a short walk later and I was at West Hampstead Jubilee station. Dud 96094 & 96071 took me forward to Kilburn, closely followed with winners 96016 & 96059 to Dollis Hill, shack attacking when out of the window as the 2nd next northbound was 10 minutes away, so dud 96038 and 96113 took me to Wembley Park, running in alongside a S8 which had “not in service” on the side, and a bit of confusion as it suddenly entered service (issues from that signal failure at Farringdon earlier), and it was onto required 21011/012 to Harrow on the Hill, where I crossed over to P2 to await the Chiltern.

There are no PIS here, apart from a S8 doing a ‘fast’ service towards Rickmansworth (calls only at Moor Park), nothing much was happening on the “British Rail” platforms, before required 165001 rolled in, so on I jumped for the 9 mile 18 chain leap down to Marylebone. Option 1 was to jump on the next Aylesbury bound service back to Harrow, but that was dud, so it was out of the station and to the Bakerloo line, with required set 3243 rolled in with dud 3540 for the 25 chain leap to Baker Street, and a transfer to the Jubilee line northbound platform, keeping my eye on the time, but in summary:
Baker Street to St Johns Wood – (Dud) 96070 & (Dud) 96111
St Johns Wood to Swiss Cottage – 96008 & 96017
Swiss Cottage to Willeseden Green – 96084 & 96109

And deciding not to push my luck as I was getting hungry, it was back to Waterloo on required 96073 & 96012, going via McDonalds before heading up to see what was on the 18:15 service (after checking for anything required for any linear leaps to Clapham), before boarding 159001 & 159107 back to Andover where it terminated in horrid weather, I got soaked walking back to the car and never knew the roads to be that bad in terms of flooding.

Anyhow, with me keeping an eye on, that service from Leeds arrived 19 minutes down, so it probably would have been possible to dash back to Vauxhall & SWT to Clapham in time for the 22:15, but I was in bed nice and early.

Meh, Blindtraveller and I were fans of it before you two! ;)

Two very good reads there Kite, I have no doubt I'd have scored an absolute ton there if I'd been there. Well done on getting your first 387/2 in as well, not at all jealous, not with 51 required 387s now...

I'm getting better Quinn, the change of temperatures is messing with my body

6th February – A tourist day in Paris

I managed to pick up a pair of cheap advance tickets for Eurostar in their January sale (£29 each way) so it was to Paris for a mix between a tourist day (never have been to Paris before) and a day sampling the various metro lines, and because I couldn’t be bothered researching the numbering system of the various subway stock I didn’t log any numbers.

After a bit of a rough night in the Easy Hotel in Croydon (hint get a windowless room), it was a short walk to the station to pick up a northbound Thameslink service, formed of duds 577516 & 577513 for the trip to Blackfriars where I decided to alight and await the next couple northbound services, first was a dud 319, 2nd was duds 387111 & 387117 for an extra mile and 75 chain leap to St Pancras, where I exited the Thameslink station to head via Boots to pick up something to munch for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch, before going to check in for the 8:31 non-stop to Paris Gare Du Nord.

Check in complete, sent via the premier security section to clear the clues as I headed via the loo to have a break before the platform was announced, going by the seating plan I knew it would be a 374, and using the detail information on the “Man in Seat 61” website to highlight which seats to avoid due to having a view of plastic, so I selected a table seat in coach 4 with hopefully a view. Platform got called and I headed up to the platform level as 374018 was leading 374017 for my first Eurostar E320 units (and they look very premium close up, especially in the loos)

The seats recline, with plug sockets below located between the seats (think 395), however beware when selecting seats as the alignment with the windows isn’t the best (if you think a pendolino is bad, the 374s are worst. The seats are quite comfortable however a slight issue is with the table doesn’t give a lot of legroom owing to the table extension part sliding next to the table at an angle, but as I had a table to myself I could spread out a bit and enjoy the speedy trip. A TV information screen displays the current speed, along with other information about how to use the seats & tables, and at one point it hit 310 km/h (192 mph).

Into France and I spent most of the time looking out of the window when listening to some various music on my ancient iPod, arriving into Paris Gare Du Nord 2 and a bit hours later, for a long walk to the front of the train to exit the platform (after a brief photo), where I attempted to locate a ticket machine, and ignoring the very kind lady’s offer of assistance (to try and sell the most expensive tickets going) as I wanted a Mobius zone 1 to 2 ticket which is a day ticket covering most of the metro, which for €7 seems very good value for money (I think the ticket that lady wanted to try and select for me was a zone 1-5 multiple day ticket at something like €30). After locating a booklet which had a map included as it is very useful when working out a rough plan, but first a couple tourist things, so eventually I found the entrance to the E-line of the “Regional Express Network” (think Crossrail/Thameslink with full size trains coming from suburbs underground before going back out the other side). A double decker service formed of 8 coaches (2 x 4-coach trains) rolled into Magenta to take me to its terminus at Haussmann St-Lazare, didn’t have long on board to sample the delights, but looked like the lower deck was all 3+2 airline seating with some bays on the upper deck (2+2 seating). Crossing over to the Paris Metro system now with a Line 3 service to “Europe”, for the sake of saying I alighted at Europe.

Seems to be old carriages, with manually operated doors (pull the handle on arriving into the station and they fly open), transverse seating, with pull down seats around the doors, it was a short wait before another line 3 service rolled in to take me to Villiers, before a short (ha!) walk to catch a line 2 service towards Charles De Gaulle – Etoille, and avoiding the charity muggers I came out to the surface to have a good look at the Arc de Triomphe, and to have some time out to have my lunch. 15 or so minutes of looking at the large stone arch, I headed back to the Metro station, and caught a line 6 to Bir-Hakeim. If I recall line 2 had new-ish looking carriages, similar to S-stock with walk through carriages, and automatic doors. Line 6 stock had rubber tyres with similar door release levers.

A short walk from the viaduct to another famous French landmark, the Eiffel Tower, another hot spot for charity muggers & people trying to shift fake models of the tower (almost as worst as some of the tourist hot spots in China), making use of a free public toilet (the sort which cleaned itself after every use taking up more time than the average use) before heading to the RER station, at “Champ de Mars tour Eiffel” with a line C service (another double decker train) to St Michel Notre-Dame, where I first saw armed soldiers on the platform trying to get passengers away, but my next stop was to see some old church, which was very old and church-like (although I wasn’t expecting much).

Eventually once back onto the station, I found the way to get to the B-line platforms (having to walk along the C-line platforms, which confused some other tourists), this time a busy single deck service, to take me to “Denfert Rochereau”, where I eventually found (the signage in the stations is rubbish) the line 4 platforms of the metro to take me to “Porte D’Orleans” where I exited the station, line 4 services are similar to line 2 in having walk through carriages, but with rubber tyres for better noise. On top of the street, I located the tram stop for a route 3A tram, one of the few tram routes within zones 1 & 2 which I could see on the map. The tramway uses modern Alstom Citadis trams (similar to the new ones on the Nottingham tram network) and was rather busy as it moved along street level to take me to Porte D’Italie, where I was happy to get off the tram and into fresh air, before heading back underground to line 7, where some rolling stock from 1978 (push buttons to open doors, with 2+1 seating) took me to “Place D’Italie”, where I found line 5 platform, where another service of the modern stock took me forward to “Gare D’Austerlitz”.

A brief walking interchange and I found a line 10 service formed of a train first seen use in 1967 to take me to Odeon, with a brief leap northwards on line 4 to take me to the island station at “Cite”, a nice enough station with spiraling staircase, and revenue protection ready to jump (as it looked like you needed a ticket to enter a station, but not to exit a station, so I would imagine short-fareing is a risk) on any tourists, around the old buildings and relaxed atmosphere, where I had a short break in the sunshine to have a packet of crisps (yummy).

Heading back underground, it was back to Odeon on line 4, before continuing my quest to ride on most of the metro lines (gives me something to do), with a line 10 service to “Sevres Babylone”, before a line 12 service (another 1967 set) to “Montparnasse Bienvenue “ which links to “Gare Montparnasse” one of the main-line stations in Paris, I eventually walked to the station and found the “Transilien” suburban platforms, where a locomotive hauled service with double decker coaches took me to the first stop at “Vanves Malakoff”, a small suburb of Paris, where a short walk took me to “Malakoff Rue E Dolet” on line 13 where I took a train to “Invalides”, with a short walk to the line 8 platforms where a service soon rolled in to take me to “Concorde”. Another short walk to the Line 1 platform, which is a fully automatic rubber tyred line with platform edge doors, and modern (ish) stock (well modern compared to the 1967 stock), and it was a short trip to “Franklin D Roosevelt”, where I transferred onto a line 9 service for another short hop to “Saint Augustin” station.

Another fully automatic line service, this time on a line 14 took me to Chatelet, where after a long walk I found the line 11 platforms for a short hop to Hotel De Ville, my final Paris Metro line (apart from the two branch lines for 3 & 7 which would take time to reach), back to Chatelet on line 11, and another walk to “Chatelet Les Hales” to the RER platforms, with an A line service to Gare De Lyon, before a D-line service back to Gare De Nord, arriving a good hour or so before the Eurostar was due to depart. It took me 10 minutes to find the entrance to the eurostar check-in area, and that was a fluke, as the signage is rubbish. A nice fast check-in, security & passport and I was into the lounge, I spotted a repainted 373 below, but before that I used up the time to have a PNB and a baguette using up a lot of my old Euro coins which I’ve collected over the years from work.

Boarding was announced and I went down the stairs to do the long walk along the platform as I was in coach 1, making a note of the carriage numbers which on the repainted 373s are a lot easier to read, so I would be taken home in required 373008 & 373007, going back via Ashford, but as I was in the front coach I had some nice motor noise, after removing the bin from underneath the table for a bit extra legroom, I sat back to read my book for the fast trip back to St Pancras arriving pretty much on time, giving me around 40 minutes to get back to Waterloo for the 21:25 to Andover, so clearing customs it was a straight walk to the Victoria line where required 11011/012 took me forward to Oxford Circus, and duds 3256/3563 down to Waterloo. Heading via Sainsburys for a light dinner, and back to the station, nothing much of note apart from a required 450 (which I scored on the Sunday) working the 21:23 to Alton which would have been done for a linear hop but it doesn’t call at Clapham Junction (runs fast to Surbiton). 159108 & 159105 were the units taking me home, the end of a long day.

A pretty funky place to go just for the day! Sounds like an amazing day out and I'm not jealous at all...

Oh those poxy street muggers, I remember them only too well...

An excellent little tour of the Paris Metro there, it's a weird little system isn't it?

Sounds like an excellent day in Paris, and you'll be glad of getting in the Loco Hauled move to Vanves [emoji14] Sadly most of the Transilien network does run off outside zone 2 fairly quickly, I'm pretty sure Line L stops within there, and there's a fairly good sized depot that way too you can have a gander at.

As for the street sellers, I did have an altercation with one of those last year [emoji38]

It is indeed, thrown together over time.

RG, I didn't even notice it was loco hauled at the time, it was only when I saw a lot of (rather funky looking) locos in a depot I checked up front when I alighted.

Yeah, most if not all of Lines N and J are hauled. The Newer ones go to Mantes La Jolie, the older ones seem to serve Rambouillet on the N and other exotic destinations on the J.

Glad you got one of the new Eurostars and saw the sights, I'd like to try one on a route that isn't Paris! Can't stand the place because of the bloody conmen everywhere.

Did you want a multi-day Zone 1-5 ticket with that? ;)

I was happy with the the New 374, the clue is when you come to select your own seat with the coach layout, number of coaches and the location of 1st class (374s is the end three coaches, whereas the 373s is in the middle)

well that was one hell of a read and catch up, a very good read at that too. Top stuff, well done clearing the 379's and was it the 315's, kite. It took me ages to catch up and things started to merge.

Certainly not resting on your morals, another one, from the rrips and planning squad, who since the turn of the year, who just has been blazing a trail. Many thanks for sharing.
