There is not really time to enjoy the sea front as the railway station is quite a distance from there, but we look around the local area before boarding the 1328 Northern service to Hull that arrives at 1453 on Friday afternoon.

From where it's the 1505 bus 350 from the adjacent Interchange across the Humber Bridge to Barton upon Humber getting off at the Market Place at 1547, Friday afternoon

Time to enjoy a good meal to sustain us and we make our way to the railway station where we board the 1755 Northern service to Grimsby Town that arrives at 1836 on Friday afternoon.

We check the timetables on the station, as it is very late on a Friday night and we are pleased to find, after a wait, a long distance journey to make, so we eventually board the 2349 EC service to Newcastle that arrives at 0218 on Saturday morning.

After a nice sleep on the benches</sarcasm> we walk to the metro station and get the T&W Metro at 05:17 to Sunderland at 05:46 the Saturday morning.

Sunderland is quite an interesting station with both NR and T & W Metro services and we spend some time on the station, before we board the 0721 Northern service to Middlesbrough that arrives at 0823 on Saturday morning.

So what? We can still get a train to Doncaster, the 22:21. We arrive at 22:51 on Friday evening.

There was meant be be a bit of irony in there - both Grimsby and Scunthorpe are among the top contenders for least attractive town in Britain. (Loose Ends, R4, last Saturday - however the programme showed they do have their merits) And our last town, Middlesborough, was top of the list, though staunchly defended by one of the broadcasters


But it does have the attraction of a scenic rail line to Whitby, leaving at 1038 . We get off at Grosmont at 1144 Saturday morning

.....and now for a journey I have actually made...

Time to have the famous "Whitby fish and chips" from one of the many cafés along the quayside, before returning to the bus stops outside the railway station where we board the 1314 Yorkshire Coastliner service 840 to York railway station that arrives there at 1535 on Saturday afternoon.

Nevertheless we can connect with your bus on the 1230 train to Pickering and still get to York at the same time

But we are now free to continue on the 1750 East Midlands departure through to London St Pancras, arriving at 2106 Saturday evening

A move to the more southern environs appeals to us and after a snack and hot drink, we board the 2155 SE service to Strood that arrives there at 2228 on Saturday night.

It does indeed, and it actually arrives at 2228!

After 15 minutes in Strood, we wonder why we've come here, so return to the station for the 2252 SE service for the short hop to Rochester, arriving 2256 Saturday night.

Why do certain Saturday night train services decide they would like to be rail-replacement coaches instead, but we are really past caring at this time of night, so we wait for and board the 2351 SE "rail-replacement coach" that arrives at Gillingham (Kent) railway station at 0009 on Sunday morning.

We carry on doggedly (and probably stupidly) on the 0017 departure from Gillingham, now a train again, to Ramsgate, arriving at 0126 Sunday morning

It is too late to book into a hotel at this unearthly hour, but a timetable check shows only a three-hour wait, so we pass the time away as best we can until we board the 0436 SE service to London Victoria which gives us time to warm up during the journey that arrives at 0628 on Sunday morning.

And caught the 0900 National Express 538 Glasgow/Aberdeen coach from the coach station and got off at Hamilton Bus station at 1725, Sunday afternoon

Hamillton has both its bus and railway station adjacent to the Regent Shopping Centre, but at this time on a Sunday, we look to be heading somewhere large enough to offer Sunday rail service onward options, so we make our way the short distance to Hamilton Central railway station where we board the 1734 First ScotRail service to Glasgow Central that arrives there at 1757 on Sunday afternoon.

I know the North East has some old customs, but that journey has foxed me as the journey started on a SUNDAY night in Newcastle at 2150.....and did not arrive in Sunderland until 2216 on a SATURDAY!!!!hock:
