Do you have the right market here ? I had the impression that Harpurhey Market was in the Church Lane/Moston Lane area, unless it has moved and still retained its old trading name.

There was another market on Grey Mare Lane that I remember being served by the 53 bus service.....was that the one you meant ?

No idea - I'm going of the timetable for the 53 from First Manchester's website, which states that it goes Gorton Shopping Centre - Sportcity - Harpurhey Market - North Manchester Gen Hospital - Cheetham Hill Crescent Rd. I'm not able to download any PDF files to confirm this from the TfGM website.

I have omitted to recall that certain routes were recast to serve North Manchester General Hospital and of course, the 53 was one of them......perhaps my memory remembers how matters were....and not as they are now...:roll:

Indeed we are at Harpurhey Market, where in my young days, you could buy 10 large turkey legs for 4 shillings and sixpence towards the end of the trading day. We decide to look around the area for old times sake before boarding the 1110 First Manchester 53 to Cheetham Hill (Crescent Road) that arrives there at 1120 on Sunday morning.

We walk to Bury Old Road and catch the First 135 service at 1133 to Besses O Th Barn, Bury Old Road/Besses Tram Stop arriving at 1145 Sunday morning

We decide that a light rail journey is just the thing on a Sunday, so we enter the Metrolink station and board the 1200 Manchester Metrolink service to Bury Interchange that arrives there at 1206 on Sunday afternoon.

Rossendale bus no 473 takes us at 1235 to Rawtenstall bus station, arriving at 1307 Sunday afternoon.

Why, we wonder, is Rawtenstall so busy when we arrive. Is it the annual convention of herbalists meeting at Mr Fitzpatrick's world-wide known herbalist shop (the last one of its particular type), but no...it is the East Lancashire Railway "Deltic Gathering Weekend" final day, so removing ourself from the unkempt bus shelters, we walk the short distance to the heritage railway booking office where we note the usual "special event prices" apply and that a special "pink" timetable also applies today, so lighter in the wallet but full of enthusiasm, we board the 1336 East Lancashire Railway 2J76 service (hauled by Deltic 55019) to the other terminal station of Heywood which arrives at 1429 on Sunday afternoon.


There is no truth whatsoever that Michael Portillo has been my "ghost" writer on this posting....it is just my poetical flair having a "day-out"..

We walk into town (Miller Street) and catch First's 471 service at 1442 to Rochdale Station Road/Milkstone Road, arriving at 1453 Sunday afternoon.

We decide to see at first hand how the new infrastructure for the Manchester Metrolink system is progressing there and being a Sunday, there are numerous enthusiasts photographing there and we spend some time chatting to them about the new system before it is time to return to the bus stop where we board the 1550 Huddersfield Bus Company service 528 to Halifax (Bull Green/Cow Green) that arrives there at 1640 on Sunday afternoon.

We have but two minutes to wait before First's 590 service carries us on to Halifax Bus Station, arriving at 1645 Sunday afternoon.

We wait patiently at the bus station until we board the 1715 First Calderdale and Huddersfield service 501 to Ainley Top (Lindley Moor Road) that arrives there at 1737 on Sunday

Would I be allowed to walk nine minutes (according to West Yorkshire Metro journey planner) further along Lindley Moor Road to another bus stop to be able to board a 503 service????

As the rules do state having to leave from the same place you arrived, be it bus stop or railway station.

Otherwise the only choice on a Sunday is to wait for another 501 service to Huddersfield (a stupid action as you were just on a 501 service to Huddersfield) or cross the road and wait for a 501 service the other way to Halifax and that is stupid because you are going back on yourself. Not invalid I know as you have changed buses but morally it's unsporting in the context of the game.

While I am here ranting, can we please avoid such things happening on a Sunday to boot! - What hope do any of us have when there's sod all around, by way of connections!

We can't leave the country, heck we can hardly leave the British mainland but we can take a bus on a Sunday to the middle of nowhere!

I am new to this game so maybe it's my fault but can someone tell me? -

Is it the aim of the game to get the next person in as much bother as possible?????

If it is then ok, i'll bare that in mind

In this game you must travel from the station or stop where the previous post left you although this may involve a short walk when changing between modes for example to a bus stop serving a rail station. No getting back on the same service you have just left. You must use a real timetabled public transport service although this can be train, bus, London Underground, tram or other light rail. You may also used water based transport as long as it's a timetabled public transport service.

This extract from the rules are that to which we all abide. I have made this self-same posting now twice in the past month in order that new contributors realise the implications of what is contained therein.

So my suggestion isn't valid, thus on a Sunday you have only two choices that are mentioned in my last post.

I'll do that so the game can continue but I find it all rather pointless.

So we will wait and admire the local views while we wait for a First Calderdale and Huddersfield Service 501 at 1835 and take it to Huddersfield Bus Station arriving at 1855 on Sunday evening

Please bear in mind that there are times when such occurrences do occur...you should have been on the quiz when we were in the region of the extreme north coast of Scotland when a service to Smoo Cave on the Pentland Firth coastine led to much soul-searching to find alternative omnibus transport.

Do not be disheartened...be creative instead. Postings of new journeys with amusing anecdotal humour are always allowed on this quiz at all times..

Absolutely and utterly so.....

Deciding upon a change of mode of travel as this is Sunday evening, we take the short walk from the bus station to the railway station where we are in time to board the 1930 First TPE service to Selby that arrives there at 2017 on Sunday evening.

We find Selby to be much to our liking.

We go out the station and turn right going not even a couple of hunderd yards. Where upon we find our selfs knocking at number six Station Road.

A kindly old lady answers the door and we ask if we can have a chat...

She agrees and in no time we are sat in a comfy armchair by the fire with a cup of piping hot tea in one hand and a mouth watering homemade cake in the other.

We regale our hostess with our travels. She sits open mouthed at our daring adventures.
Lybster Syndrome has her on the edge of her seat.

After several more cups of tea and probably more cake then we really should have had, the kindly old dear offers us the spare room for the night.

We politely decline and moving a reluctant ginger cat that had snuggled in our lap we offer our sinscere thanks and head for the door.

As we stand in the doorway we feel the night air and ponder on our decision to decline the warm bed and remark that winter is fast approaching.

We promise to send our new friend a postcard and make the short walk back to the railway station.

After such a busy and eventful Sunday, it is time to seek overnight accommodation in order that we approach a new week fully refreshed in mind and body and are fortunate that Sunday night means hotel room vacancies do not pose a problem, so remembering to ask for an 0430 alarm call from the night porter after we pay for the overnight stay, we retire to our room and fall asleep quickly. We are woken by the alarm call and are in good time to return to the railway station to board the 0520 Northern service to Sheffield that arrives there at 0745 on Monday morning.

We take the 08:00 Blue Line Tram from Sheffield Station/Sheffield Hallam University to Malin Bridge, arriving 08:20 Monday

Just a short wait before we board the 0833 Stagecoach Sheffield service SL2 to Stannington (Upper Gate Road/Bankfield Lane) that arrives there at 0844 on Monday morning.

I think the game has several aims and at different times different aims come to the fore. So some of the time it certainly appears so.

We cross the road in the centre area and board the 1008 First South Yorkshire service 97 to Totley Rise (Abbeydale Road South/West View Close) that arrives there at 1034 on Monday morning.

We spend a pleasant time at Baslow, taking an early lunch, before we board the 1206 T M Travel service 218 to Bakewell (The Square) that arrives there at 1214 on Monday afternoon.

Deciding we don't have anywhere better to be, we spend a few hours wandering around Bakewell, before joining the 16:59 High Peak route TP3/4 to Manchester Chorlton Street coach station, arriving 18:45 Monday

Strangely enough, I picked the new timetables for both the X40/X41 and the X43 today in Manchester on the way back from the East Lancashire Railway "Deltic Gathering".......

Time to go to the bus stop outside the coach station and board the 1900 Transdev Lancashire United service X43 to Nelson Interchange that arrives there at 2027 on Monday evening.

We take the last westbound train out of Nelson, the 21:50 Northern service to Moss Side, arriving 23:07 Monday

I find it only right that I am stranded in the middle of acres of farmland at such a time of night, as I too have subjected others to this fate in the past..

Nothing for it...no places nearby where a warm bed for the night are available..so all we can do is find somewhere to try and sleep without being a source of interest to the local wildlife population and eventually sleep mercifully overcomes us and we wake to the sound of early morning birdsong. We look outside in the dawn light and see there is a bus stop outside the railway station, so we comb our hair and try to look presentable before eventually boarding the 0726 Coastal Coaches service 76 to St Annes (Square) that arrives there at 0750 on Tuesday morning.

We get to St Annes-on-the-Sea station just in time to see a Preston bound train leaving, so we decide to find somewhere to eat before returning for the 08:52 Northern service to Lostock Hall, arriving at 09:27 Tuesday

Again we change the mode of travel and walk across to the Library bus stop where we are just in time to catch the 0937 Stagecoach in Lancashire service 109 to Chorley bus station that arrives there at 1011 on Tuesday morning.
