And with a liking for buses we decide to take what appears at least on paper to be a scenic route.

We grab a paper and drink and make our way to stand 9 for the 1530 number 58 service to Buxton, Market Place run by High Peak Buses arriving at 1600 on Wednesday afternoon

Time to visit a local tea room before it closes for the day for tea and some locally baked delicacies before returning from when we came to board the 1748 High Peak service 442 to Hulme End (Manifold Valley Hotel) that arrives there at 1823 on Wednesday afternoon.


Hulme End has historical railway significance if you are interested, being the terminal station on the Leek and Manifold Valley light railway..

Alas we have been unmindful of onward transport and find ourselves stuck in this undoubtedly delightful spot until morning

We continue on the 0748 442 departure to Ashbourne Bus station, arriving at 0835 on Thursday morning

An excellent place to visit, so we make our way to the large church of St Oswald to view the seven marble raised tomb monuments to knights from many centuries ago in a side chapel, then back to the road where we pass the alms houses then have time to see inside some of the many antique shops, before reluctantly returning to the narrow street containing the bus station and board the 1010 Clowes Coaches service 108 to Cauldon (Cow Lane) that arrives there at 1030 on Thursday morning.


How can you guess that my wife and I are regular visitors to Ashbourne,

It's a long wait in this quarrying settlement for any onward transport, but eventually at 1552 the next 108 bus turns up and takes us to Macclesfield Bus station, arriving at 1635 on Thursday afternoon

unless we cheat and walk ? 2km to Waterhouses from where we can arrive in Macclesfield at 1415

In this game you must travel from the station or stop where the previous post left you although this may involve a short walk when changing between modes ......for example to a bus stop serving a rail station.

We arrive bang on time and after a brief walk to the Railway Station we don't have long to wait till we board the 1649 CrossCountry service to Bournemouth arriving on the South coast at 2115 on Thursday evening

Time for a snack and a hot drink before we board the 2212 SWT service to Brookwood that arrives there at 0013 on Friday morning.

We have little time to wait around and a prayers answered vis-a-vis seeing Basingstoke at 0100 in the morning we gleefully board the...

It is too late to look for warm accommodation with a comfortable bed at this hour, so we make ourselves as warm as possible and await and board the 0547 XC service to Manchester Piccadilly that arrives there at 0939 on Friday morning.

This gives us the opportunity to have a rail journey down the Copy Pit line where we hope to see some of the groundworks near Todmorden for the Todmorden Chord, so we board the 1229 Northern service to Hebden Bridge that arrives there at 1349 on Friday afternoon.

A change of travel mode sees us depart from the railway station and we take the short walk to the nearby bus station where we board the 1620 Arriva Yorkshire service 416 to York (Piccadilly) that arrives there at 1658 on Friday afternoon.

We take a short walk through to the Stonebow for the Yorkshire Coastliner service 843 departure at 1727 to Scarborough Peasholme Park , arriving at 1858, Friday evening

This now presents us with an opportunity to keep seaside destinations to the fore and at the same time, to make a bus journey that at least links two seaside resorts that were once rail-connected, so we board the 1934 Esk Valley Coaches service 8A to Whitby bus station that arrives there at 2015 on Friday evening.

We find a B&B for the night and have a long lie in to make up for all the nights spent pacing platforms and then (after the customary hearty breakfast) catch the NYMR 1100 departure to Pickering, arriving at 1240 Saturday afternoon

Being here brings it to mind that this area too once had many rail routes through rural farming areas, so we leave the restored heritage railway station and walk across to the bus stop outside the Royal Oak where we board the 1317 Yorkshire Coastliner service 840 to Malton bus station that arrives there at 1341 on Saturday afternoon.

We have nearly an hour to wait before departing on Phoenix Travel's 133 service at 1434 to Driffield Middle Street South arriving at 1529, Saturday afternoon

Continuing the omnibus travelogue of East Yorkshire, we board the 1607 EYMS service 121 to Beverley bus station that arrive there at 1635 on Saturday afternoon.

A change of TOC and a hot drink to refresh us in readiness as we then board the 2001 First TPE service to Heald Green that arrives at 2126 on Saturday evening.

We now decide to see what Morrisons Supermarket have to offer at this late hour, but come away disappointed, so we go to the bus stop on the Cheadle bound carriageway and board the 2220 Stagecoach Manchester service 11A to Timperley (Stockport Road/Stonemasons Arms) that arrives there at 2243 on Saturday evening.

We get to the Stonemasons Arms just in time to see a 370 leave in the other direction. Somewhat annoyed by this turn of events, we set up camp in the bus shelter to wait overnight for the 08:11 MCT route 178 to Christie Hospital, arriving 09:13 Sunday

Sunday morning is not the best time for connections normally, but a judicious viewing of the timetable affixed to the inside of the bus shelter shows we are in luck and we board the 0916 Stagecoach Manchester service 42 to Chorlton upon Medlock (Oxford Road/University Shopping Centre) that arrives there at 0935 on Sunday morning.
