we walk to Clive Road, Cowbridge Road East, Canton and take New Adventure Travel X1 bus at 18:50 to Churchill Way (Stop Hp), Churchill Way, Cardiff where we arrive at 19:09 on Wednesday evening.

We then board the 1920 Cardiff Bus service 57 to Pentwyn (Hollybush Inn), arriving there at 1941 on Wednesday evening.

As Traveline Cymru receives its core funding from the Welsh Government, can I ask you with your far better knowledge than I possess of travel matters in Wales, if questions have been raised in the Welsh Government about the shortcomings in its system, to which you make note of above.

Yes, there has, but perhaps that is for another thread as I don't want to clutter this for the mod team!

The last thing I have to say in the matter is that should you choose to use Traveline Cymru for timings, perhaps it would be wise to maybe match the location on Google Maps, as this is generally more accurate in terms of settlements. Just a suggestion anyway and as I say, I've said all I need to say :)

I'm glad we sorted the Cyntwell ambiguity quickly! Some sharp research there.

I've done some research of my own, and I think Cyntwell was the name of the area as housing started to encroach here from the Cardiff direction. Here's an old map. OS maps seem to have been referring to the area by this name as late as 1990; the area changed its name from Saintwell sometime around the first world war. I think it's unsuprising the area has largely dropped its name, when you consider the pronunciation!

Apart from the problems we've sometimes seen with names, are we satisfied Traveline is a generally accurate source of timing information?

I bloody hope so, since Transport Direct was foolishly closed it is the only real source of information.

In my experience I've found Traveline to be accurate as regards actual trip timings.

When I joined this game (and its International Travel cousin) I was a bit unsure whether planning via Google Maps would be accurate, and often did cross-checks with Traveline and current timetables on bus company websites before posting my moves. Google Maps was the service under scrutiny in my exercise - I assumed Traveline, being a UK Government-sponsored agency, would be the gold standard, rather than a profit-seeking US corporate giant.

I don't think I ever came across a discrepency with my journey plans (mostly in England and Scotland). Occasionally bus stops have appeared with variations in names, but these were always minor differences and never gave any ambiguity as to our location - until Cyntwell.

In short, I'm happy to use Traveline, but will be more aware of possible naming issues in future.

Sounds like a good idea!

We're conveniently around the corner from Queen Street station.

From CDQ we take the 2021 ATW train 2P94 to Cardiff Central arriving at 2025 Wednesday evening.

Exiting the station to the adhacent bus stops on Customhouse Street, we then board the 2105 Newport Bus service 30 to Rumney (Carpenters Arms), arriving there at 2123 on Wednesday evening.

It seems reasonable to be moving our journey onward to somewhere new, so after a pint somewhere in Rumney we get on the next 30 Cardiff Bus all the way to Newport Bus Station, departing 2220 and arriving 2249 on Weds evening.

I think the consensus seems to be that Traveline is fine to use, then, which is good as that's what I thought too. If we have any name problems in the future then I'm sure we can sort them through a bit of research - that stop ID suggestion sounds like it could be useful when in difficulty - but if you find yourself completely stuck then drop the QMs a line and we'll be along to throw our minds at the problem!

That appears to be it for the rest of the day, so taking the short walk to Nash Drive, we then board the 0628 New Adventure Travel service N4 to Bettws (Clist Road), arriving there at 0710 on Thursday morning.

Traveline is good for the timing side of things, just not the location.

The stop ID is a good shout.

I've just checked my next move using the First bus app and can confirm that the bus stop below is listed on Google Maps also, so this is definitely recognisable.

We next board the 1005 Faresaver Bus service X34 to Trowbridge (Town Bridge on Stallard Street) that arrives there at 1101 on Thursday morning.

We then board the 1108 First in Bristol, Bath and The West service 265 to Bathampton (St George's Hill), arriving there at 1151 on Thursday morning.

We then board the 1706 First Hampshire Southampton service 10 to Thornhill (Burgoyne Road), arriving there at 1731 on Thursday afternoon.

Edit: operator is actually First Southampton not First Hampshire. Must be a fairly new change as I did not realise Southampton was a seperate operator, along with First Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport. Apologies!

There aren't any night services within reach of our destination so that appears to be it for the evening. So the next available service from Heald Green, Finney Ln/Heald Green Hotel TP is Stagecoach Manchester 369 service at 0527 which we take as far as Edgeley, Edgeley Rd/Cheadle Old Rd (MANJAWDM) where we arrive at 05:43 on Friday morning.

I am becoming somewhat concerned that this new requirement for coded stop details is adding extra requirements to posting submissions. If I give an arrival destination with the fully accepted destination, that should suffice in my eyes.

I have spent the best part of the day so far at Stockport bus station looking at all the hard-copy A5 size TfGM-published bus timetables and these only give certain timing stop times for certain main stages. Nowhere where these two types of stop codes discussed on this thread appear in these bus timetables.

It doesn't have to be the actual stop codes, as I admit that is time consuming, but it just has to be geographically accurate.

I agree it shouldn't really need the code, I may be neurotic and over zealous and add it in but wouldn't think it is an absolute requirement. I would agree the description is the main thing, I know in the past I have linked to the location on Google Maps, when I thought the one provided on Traveline was somewhat vague. I guess it is ultimately about the next person being able to reasonably conclude where we are at any given point without having to retrace our steps.

It would be good too but it's almost two hours away, which seems pretty unreasonable given that Stockport has hundreds of other services.

However, no one else takes into account the minimum time scale, and it is a rare working after all, so we indeed take the seven minute walk along Station Road to the station, where we board the famous 0922 Northern service 2J45 to Stalybridge, arriving there at 0945 on Friday morning.
