The problem with sticking to the 26 is that it isn't very frequent and also connecting points are very poor (hence my previous post to Marden station in the hope we could continue our travels by train). To ensure we can move on further and to avoid getting stranded anywhere else on this route, we board the 1426 Nu Venture service 26 to Goudhurst (Car Park), arriving there at 1510 on Monday afternoon.

Saw it on National Rail Enquiries as running on Tuesday, 26t July, so being a service running at this very early hour, it may be one used for purposes of retention of route knowledge as diversions are known to pass this way.

Gameplay

The Aim of the game is to travel around the country using public transport in a pseudo-realistic fashion. To play, you must depart from the station or stop where the previous post arrived using a permitted timetabled public transport service. Having arrived at the destination, the minimum connection time for the station or stop must be allowed for. Where this is not published, a minimum interchange time is considered to be five minutes. In your post you should clearly state the time your service departs, the company who's service you are using and the time and day of arrival at your chosen destination

Additional Notes

• If arriving by bus or coach then you should name the area in addition to the stop name.
• If a move is discovered to be incorrect then the original post should be struck through and the correction made as a new post.
• Should the previous move leave you at a the end of a route for which there are no services timetabled to depart from then you may walk to the nearest stop where services are available.
• So the game remains realistic, you should use the current timetable for the relevant day not including timetable variations for engineering works.

Rules

• You may not re-board the service just used in the previous post
• You should use the first available service to reach your destination after allowing for the minimum interchange time.
• You shouldn't wait for more than two hours after the first available service (to any destination) has left, after allowing for the minimum interchange time.
• You may walk up to about half a mile when changing modes to a stop in the vicinity, if you wish.
• The use of cars, taxis, planes or helicopters is not allowed.
• The playing area includes only mainland Great Britain. This includes any landmass connected to Great Britain by bridge or tunnel (excluding the Channel Tunnel). Domestic ferry services to outlying islands, such as the Isle of Wight and the Scottish Islands are also acceptable.

In that case I'd say no so is it worth using the same service to one of the more prominent stations on the line such as Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly?

My own (unilateral) rule-of-thumb in cases like this is to check pdf timetables posted on the TOC's own website and/or the relevant table in the National Rail Timetable. If the service is noted in these, I'd consider it a legitimate move. If not listed, then I'd consider it some kind of short-term variation and therefore not kosher.

Mainly I've used this strategy when rail replacement buses appear in a planned move. In some cases (like Manchester/Preston at the moment, and Liverpool/Wigan in the recent past), buses replace trains at certain times of day on a medium-term basis and these are explicitly printed in Northern's timetable leaflets. I'd suggest these moves are allowable in the game.

In the current example, the stop at Brighouse by the 0138 ex-York is not noted in either TPE's own timetable, nor in Table 39 of the NRT, so my opinion is it falls into the "...... not including timetable variations for engineering works" category - i.e. not valid.


This test is my own, it is not written into quiz rules. Maybe we could add something on these lines to cover future occurrences?

Agreed. Another way of checking such situations is to select a day on Real Time Trains where there are no variations (VAR) to the working timetable or short term planning (STP). On 2nd August that service runs as normal via Huddersfield and Stalybridge, and not via Brighouse, Hebden Bridge and Rochdale.

The problem here is that you have used the very same train (0138 from York) that the query was first raised about, which made me decide to strike my posting through.

Have we ever had such a situation as this before, either on this current game thread or the original version of the game.

I don't perceive there is a problem with DanTrainMan185's post.

He has posted the normal week-in-week-out timetabled schedule for the 0138 ex-York, which is normally due in MAN at 0325.
The short-term variation which Paul Sidorczuk has now deleted and was based on this week's NRE Planner would have arrived in Piccadilly at 0343 (having travelled unusually via Brighouse).

Indeed. I did say Paul it would be fine to use the same service, just to a different location. Even if it was struck-through, I am more than entitled to use the same service to a different station. My station is, as Springs Branch says, on the working timetable.

If it becomes an issue Paul, just make a new move instead of striking through and just leaving it at that.
