We decide to venture off the mainland and visit Sodor Jersey via Weymouth's ferry terminal. However, this is too far to walk, so instead we head down Commercial Road and board the 1053 First in Wessex, Dorset & South Somerset number 8 bus on a one-stop hop to Town Square (Stop T1) arriving one minute later - 1054 Saturday morning.

From here, the terminal is 0.5 miles away - within walking distance

Just as a head's up, that bus stop is called Town Bridge not Town Square. I was wondering why I couldn't find it anywhere!

We then board the 1101 First Wessex, Dorset and South Somerset service 3 to Westham (Devon Road), arriving there at 1111 on Saturday morning.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Rules
  • You may not re-board the service just used in the previous post
  • You should use the first available service to reach your destination after allowing for the minimum interchange time.
  • You shouldn't wait for more than two hours after the first available service (to any destination) has left, after allowing for the minimum interchange time.
  • You may walk up to about half a mile when changing modes to a stop in the vicinity, if you wish.
  • The use of cars, taxis, planes or helicopters is not allowed.
  • The playing area includes only mainland Great Britain. This includes any landmass connected to Great Britain by bridge or tunnel (excluding the Channel Tunnel). Domestic ferry services to outlying islands, such as the Isle of Wight and the Scottish Islands are also acceptable

Looking at the final rule, where I have emboldened the comment concerning the ferry services to outlying islands, the recent mention in a posting of one of the Channel Islands is surely way outside those stated parameters shown by that forum quizmaster.

Surely the Channel Islands fall under the category of "domestic ferries", as they are part of the UK?

Furthermore, outside of Paul's aforementioned note, there are no ferries from Weymouth anymore. Condor Ferries transferred all their operations to Poole as their new vessel was too big for the harbour.

Entering the railway station, we then board the 1406 South West Trains service 1L52 to Salisbury, arriving there at 1516 on Saturday afternoon.

As I understand the matter, the Channel Islands are two self-governing Bailwicks:-
The Bailwick of Guernsey
The Bailwick of Jersey

Both are British Crown Dependencies and neither form part of the United Kingdom.

I am willing to be corrected on this matter.

I didn't know that - Google still shows the route...

Anyways, I still want to leave the mainland. The only island within one journey is Wight - and that is on the 1533 GWR service to its terminus of Portsmouth Harbour. We arrive at the edge of the Solent at 1654 Saturday afternoon.

Adjudication requested
Do the ferries to the Channel Islands/ Isle of Man fall under the same category as ferries to the Isle of Wight - domestic, and can we travel to these islands within the UK game?

Paul is correct here. The Channel Islands, and indeed the Isle of Man, are self governing Crown dependencies, thus not part of England, Scotland or, Wales. Outlying islands this is rule is intended to include are those of Shetland, the Isle of Wight (and suchlike) which fall within the juristiction of the UK mainland country.

You are correct, I did see a Jersey to St Helier line jutting out of the mainland. It really should be removed as they instead go from Poole.

We are reluctant to leave the mainland incase we can never return! Therefore, we board the 1723 Great Western Railway service 1F30 to Newport, arriving there at 2029 on Saturday evening.

The 3 appears to be the only bus running at this hour, so we continue on the 2320 First Southampton service 3 to Southampton (Vincents Walk), arriving there at 2349 on Sunday evening.

I have a feeling we have probably been on the same vehicle for the last three moves now
